This week's episode of Eight One Sixty is all about Kansas City Irish Fest — happening this Saturday, Sept. 5, virtually on your computer and in communal watch parties around KC as the Fest Where You Are benefit concert. Chris sits down (via Zoom) with KCIF music director David Shaughnessy (A.K.A. Shocko) to get all the info about this year's pivoted festival.
Traditionally, KCIF brings tens of thousands of people to Crown Center, gathering musicians from across the globe. This year, they've had to adjust.
This Saturday night, from 7 to 9 p.m., some of KC's best musicians create an Irish mixtape, of sorts. Each act will perform one song by celebrated Irish acts (it will only stream once): Calvin Arsenia, Ashley Davis, Eddie Delahunt, Maria The Mexican, Enrique Chi of Making Movies, Ian & Kian Byrne of The Elders, Madisen Ward of Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear, Victor & Penny, Katy Guillen of Katy Guillen and The Drive, and Carswell & Hope, who is the backing band for the evening. In addition to the above KC acts playing, several acts from across the pond will join it too, including Aoife Scott, Byrne and Kelly, Corner Boy, Gaelic Storm, Oscar Blue, Shane Hennessy and We Banjo 3.
On the show, we’ll talk about other ways to join in the celebration and we’ll also play music from several of the acts listed above.
This week's Eight One Sixty celebrates the 100th birthday of Charlie "Bird" Parker! Chris reached out to several Kansas City-based jazz musicians, including Hermon Mehari, Eddie Moore, Jackie Myers, Logan Richardson, Kadesh Flow, Ernest Melton and maybe more. We'll share thoughts and music from their catalogs inspired by the legendary musician.
This week's episode of Eight One Sixty highlights Greenline Grows KC: A Benefit for The Greenline Initiative, a livestream benefit concert coming up on Friday, Aug. 28. On the show we’ll sit down with one of the founders of The Greenline Initiative, Ajia Morris, and musician Khrystal.
The virtual concert event will feature music from Radkey, The Greeting Committee, Khrystal., Danny Cox + Bob Walkenhorst, Cuee, Enrique Chi of Making Movies + Las Hermanas Altoro, Stephonne, Krystle Warren, They Call Me Sauce and The Phantastics. We'll play music from several of these acts on the show.
All money raised from the virtual event will benefit The Greenline Initiative, which is a Black family-owned organization in Kansas City that uses crowdsourced funding to help historically marginalized and low-income populations in our city buy and renovate the houses they rent.
Chris is back with a load of new #kcmusic for this episode of Eight One Sixty! Even as we find ourselves months into a pandemic, bands and musicians are finding creative ways to safely record and release new music and we’re happy to share a lot of that new music with you.
We’ll hear new tunes from Second Hand King, Sam Arjes, Kemet Coleman, The Noise FM, They Call Me Sauce (our Bridge Artist of the Week!), Nisee Amore, Bahroot (a project from Eric Fain), W,TR, The Nicole Springer Band, The Moose, Harrisonics and Danza. A dozen news songs, across several genres — all neatly packaged in one hour of programming!
On this week's episode of the Eight One Sixty, we wrap up the Concerts That Changed Your Life series with a deep dive from host and concert enthusiast Chris Haghirian!
The shows stretch from 1996 to 2005, from Lawrence to KC, over to Seattle, up to Minneapolis, and an insanely muddy weekend at Bonnaroo.
The show is so full of name drops and mentions. Here are some teases: Damien Rice, Glen Hansard, Josh Ritter, Brandi Carlile, Mudhoney, Kurt Cobain, Coldplay, Peter Buck of R.E.M., William Elliott Whitmore, Beth Orton, Dave Matthews Band, John Butler Trio, Imogen Heap, Zoe Keating, The Frames, Tori Amos, Jónsi, The Chemical Brothers and probably some more too.
From Chris:
As I was recording this show it felt like I was reading from a diary or that it was a session with a therapist. It was a lot of fun and perhaps it explains a lot of things. I hope you can tune in today at 6 p.m. as I share stories from some of the concerts that changed my life.
Every July on the Eight One Sixty, we do a deep dive into a month-long series of shows, and we're doing it again this year. Chris has been sitting down with four different musicians (via Zoom) who have been telling us about the concerts that changed their lives!
This week Chris sits down with Isaac Flynn of the band Hembree. This is the third week in a series of shows where people are sharing with us five concerts that changed their life and telling us the stories behind those shows.
Isaac has picked some good ones! Tune in for music from Wilco, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, Cowboy Indian Bear and perhaps the highlight of the show — music from his parents John and Jami Flynn. He’ll tell us about their concert at Worlds of Fun back in 1996.
If you missed the previous two shows, we had a great time with Amy Farrand of Amy Farrand and The Like and Marty Hilliard of EBONY TUSKS, as they shared with us the concerts that changed their lives. Next week we’ll welcome Addie Sartino of The Greeting Committee to the series.

This week we’re joined by an amazing human, and longtime KC area musician, Marty Hillard. He’s been in a lot of projects over the years, and is currently blowing minds with EBONY TUSKS.
Marty joins us to talk about the concerts that changed his life, as part 2 of our month-long series. He’s got quite the list to share and he picked out the music that we’ll play too:
Feb. 4, 2003 — Coldplay at Memorial Hall

This week, we caught up with longtime KC musician Amy Farrand of Amy Farrand and The Like and so many different bands over the years. She was recently quarantined in Italy for several months and has just returned home to KC. We’ll hear a little about her time in Italy, and then we’ll jump into her list of five concerts that changed her life. She’s picked a song from each act to spin on the show.
Here are the dates of the shows from her list:
Over the next few weeks we’ll sit down with Marty Hilliard of EBONY TUSKS, Addie Sartino of The Greeting Committee and Isaac Flynn of Hembree and ask them the same question we asked Amy — what concerts changed your life?
