At the center of almost all large galaxies lies a supermassive black hole—the largest type of black hole, with mass on the order of millions to billions of times the mass of the Sun. Only 5% of the universe is visible. The rest of the universe appears to be made of a mysterious, invisible substance called dark matter (25%) and a force that repels gravity known as dark energy (70%). The truth is, we are always seeing into the past. When you read a book you are seeing the book as it was a very small fraction of a second ago. But as we look further afield, we can peer further back. We can see seconds, minutes, hours and years into the past with our own eyes. Looking through a telescope, we can see centuries and even millennia into the past. The reason? Information can only travel through the Universe at the speed of light. The larger the distance, the longer it takes light to cross those distances. As we know, the observable universe is huge, but it has limits. That's because we know the universe isn't infinitely old—we know the Big Bang occurred some 13.8 billion years ago. Although there is no evidence that the universe has an edge, scientists don't understand why there is a limit to how far out we can see into Outer Space. In the first moments after the Big Bang, the universe was extremely hot and dense. As the universe cooled, conditions became just right to give rise to the building blocks of matter – the quarks and electrons of which we are all made. As the universe continued to expand and cool, things began to happen more slowly.
