  • Wind, fire, shells and the latest in science!

Dr Mika Peace from the Bureau of Meteorology explains her research into how complex interactions between fires and the atmosphere produces extreme local fire behaviour, as we brace ourselves for another fire season ahead. Dipping into the ocean, Dr Laura Otter from the Australian National University unpacks her research into ‘nacre’, the incredibly beautiful iridescent material we see on the insides of some seashells and the outside of pearls. It turns out nacre is not just pretty to look at; it also has a 3D hierarchical arrangement and nano-scale features that make it three thousand times tougher than the materials from which it is made! With presenters Dr. Shane, Dr. Ray, and Dr. Stacey.

This week Dr Shane talks to Tim Costello, Executive director of Micah Australia, about how to vax the world against Covid. What does Australia’s commitment to COVAX look like, what is the moral question behind boosters in the developed world and how does the non-continuing contract with the CSL facility in Melbourne potentially influence vaxxing the Pacific Region.

Presenters Dr Shane, Dr Lauren, Dr Anu and Dr Graci are also talking about space, moon and earth shine, coating roads to lower temperatures, and the deep ocean. Interesting facts about blob and vampire fish ahead! And what is a peacock mantis shrimp??
