El Partido

We are less than one week away from the return of the football season in Spain but teams are still playing their last pre-season fixtures in an effort to get minutes in before the long campaign ahead. Friend of the podcast, Matt Harrison is spending the Summer in Granada and has kindly sent us in his report from the Estadio Los Carmenes, where the home side welcomed Abu Dhabi based Al Ain for their final friendly of the summer.

As always, if you would like to feature on El Partido en Directo then send us your reports from whatever level of Spanish football you're watching this weekend!

It's not every day you can hop in the car and watch a team from the Costa del Sol play in the UK's premier university city but this is what was on offer this weekend as Malaga played Oxford United in a pre-season friendly. It was a weekend full of fixtures with 7 Spanish sides on UK shores for friendlies but none of them were as well attended as the Guiri Army descended on the Kassam stadium. Join Nick as he and daughter Ruby bring us everything from the game and all the pre-game actvities in a local Wetherspoons!

The World Cup in 2010 was a tournament of firsts. First one to held in Africa, first to have a scientifically enhanced ball. Not the first appearance for North Korea weirdly... But it was a first for Spain and a first that they had been waiting to achieve for decades. 15 years ago today, Vicente Del Bosque led his side into the cauldron of 'Soccer City' with a chance to become Kings of the World and subsequently, history was made. Join Nick and Paul for the last episode of this season as they bring back fond memories of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and relive Spain's incredible success in winning the World Cup!

In our second installment of 'Sleeping Giants', we're looking back at a well known yet often underappreciated side, who during the 90's beat Premier League opposition in a European final and became experts in winning the Copa del Rey. We're delighted to be joined by Liam Bambridge of the Spanish Segunda show and El Pozo to talk about the rise and fall of Real Zaragoza!

There may have only been two games this weekend, with the first legs of the play off finals underway, but there was still plenty of action. Real Sociedad B put one foot in the Spanish Segunda with a win away at Nastic but there's still all to play for at El Toralin after Ponfe drew away Andorra. Nick and Liam bring you a full review of both of those games and look ahead to the final games next weekend, where two sides will join Ceuta and Cultu in the second tier!

In a change to our usual broadcasting schedule, due to Google Servers going hangwire, we bring you the first of our El Partido Stories. In this first episode, Nick looks back on the story of Hércules reaching La Liga after a 13 year absence - playing bold football and making a splash in the transfer market. In a season that started with high hopes and big ambitions, eventually would crumble and set the Alicante club on course for an even longer exile away from the Spanish top flight.
