Elevate City Church

If you consider for a second about every time the world has ever changed, every revolution that has ever turned the world upside down, it's always been fueled by some sort of power.

If we're going to see an unstoppable revolution of the Christian Faith and the Church, then what we have to do cannot be done by us. We cannot organize into it happening. We cannot conjure it up. We must get desperate for the power and the presence of the Holy Spirit to do for us what we can never do for ourselves.

Just imagine God's presence doing this for you: going from distant to close, from understood to experience, from something you heard about to something you witnessed, from something that's like way up there, somewhere in the stratosphere, in the sky to something that's right here in my midst, from something reserved for priests and prophets to something available for all people.

How did this ragtag group of unemployed fishermen and zealots and zealots and tax collectors from backwoods Galilee -- most of whom who had never traveled 50 miles away from where they were born -- How did they change the world?

During this series we will take an in depth study of the book of Acts, and how the early Church turned the world upside down.

1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

4 And while staying[a] with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

The Ascension

6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

The question of how to forgive someone -- is not a question of many times, what happens if they do it again, or the logic of forgiveness.

The question of how to truly forgive someone is a question of love. What Jesus uses is love. Jesus chooses to forgive because He knows that he who forgives little, loves little, but he who forgives much, loves much.

Is love in you and running through you, as your identity in Christ? Oftentimes why we never move towards forgiveness is because we never understand the source of forgiveness as love.

What would happen if this is the kind of community that we were, the kind of community who are default position in our highest understanding of the kingdom and the ethics of the kingdom, were forgiveness. This is this is the Jesus pattern.

We forgive until they are actually forgiven.

23 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”Matthew 18:23-35

God hates pride.

According to the biblical narrative, if you're looking for the answer for how to get yourself kicked out of heaven -- pride is place to start.

The the birth of sin in the universe starts with pride. Pride is the blueprint of hell's rebellion.

The culture that we live in today will use your pride and your selfish ambition to find yourself at the gates of hell. Our culture today loves to tell you that the way that you can get the most satisfaction and happiness out of this life is to make your life about you, to put you at the center.

The greatest rival to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is me, myself, and I.

Pride is the downfall of everything.

In the sermon, catch a glimpse into what is happening beneath the surface of pride, and how to find freedom and redemption into looking at the greatness of King Jesus.

In the Church, We are not spiritual consumers. We are Kingdom contributors.You may not feel it. You may not see it. But God has put something unique inside of you: it’s a spiritual gift, a divine deposit. And this gift you did not earn, but you have received thru faith in Jesus. Today as it stands, there are 3.4 billion people who exist that have no access to the gospel.

They likely do not know a single believer in their neighborhood. People who will be born, they will live and they will die, likely without ever hearing the gospel. This, as a church, should compel us to action and radical obedience as God's people.

Jesus consistently lived in this rhythm where he was oftentimes in the secret place, spending time with the father, but then he was always leaving that place for the harvest.

There were always more places where the kingdom of God had to be proclaimed. And so now that you spent time with Jesus, now that you've had your time in the secret place, are you ready for the mission?

In this sermon you'll learn how God's heart is burdened for unreached people groups all around the world, our role to play in missions, and how we will be worshipping one day with people of all nations, all tribes, all tongues, singing Holy Holy Holy is the Lord God all mighty.

You were created for connection with the God of the universe.

Whether you realize it or not, you long for it, ache for it, it’s the thing that you’re searching for. God created you to experience that connection daily with Him, but most people are so distracted with the worries and cares around them that they miss out on the moments that Jesus wants to share with them.
