TARRIFS ON CHINESE VT EQUIPMENT SET TO COMMENCE
National Elevator Industry, Inc. (NEII®) notes in its Insider newsletter that tariffs on imported Chinese vertical-transportation (VT) equipment will take effect on July 6. On June 15, President Donald Trump, along with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), released the administration's final list of Chinese products subject to tariffs. Included are elevator and escalator parts and components, including sheaves, motors and machines. NEII submitted testimony in May voicing concerns and recommending that several elevator- and escalator-related subsections be excluded from the list, stating that the tariffs would harm supply chains, decrease competitiveness in the industry and force additional costs onto U.S. customers. The USTR plans to let companies apply for individual-product exemptions, and NEII said its government-affairs team would work with companies that wish to engage in the process.
ALL-WAYS BUYS FABIAN, PARTNERS WITH GRUPO EXCELSIOR
Fabian USA, the U.S. subsidiary of Spain-based manufacturer and installer of commercial and residential elevators Grupo Excelsior, has sold its New York operations and become part of All-Ways Elevator, Inc., a full-service elevator company based in Hauppauge, New York. All-Ways has become the first U.S. dealer of Grupo Excelsior and plans to add more territories and dealers. It has also taken over Fabian's existing elevator installation and service projects. All-Ways installs new commercial and residential elevators, as well as services, repairs and inspects equipment from Montauk to Manhattan and Greater New York City.
ESCALATORS TO BE INSTALLED ON ISTANBUL'S STEEP SLOPES
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, in an effort to improve the lives of senior citizens and those with disabilities, has initiated a project to install escalators on the city’s steep slopes, the Hürriyet Daily News reports. A tender that will be conducted on July 23 covers escalators for three streets in the Beyoglu, Fatih and Eyüp districts, but the project is expected to cover other districts as well. Of the three slopes in the tender, one is 85 m long, and two others are 50 m long.

    MULTI-BUILDING BROOKLYN PROJECT WINS PERMITS
Permits have been approved for a mixed-use development on the East River in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York, that includes five buildings, New York YIMBY reports. According to the permit filings, the project, named Calyer Place, will include two 33-story towers standing 290 ft. tall; 19- and 14-story towers standing 190 and 142 ft., respectively; and a 14-story building rising 211 ft. The development would total almost 1 million sq. ft., 700,000 of which would hold some 700 apartments. Another 10,000 sq. ft. would be designated commercial, while 7,160 sq. ft. of space was listed as an unspecified community facility. The developer is M&H Realty, LLC, and the design is by Cooper Robertson & Partners, with SLCE Architects as architect of record.
ZONING PANEL IN CANADA APPROVES TALLER TOWER
City planning officials in Nanaimo, Canada, have approved a plan for a 24-story, 109-unit luxury residential building, which would be the Vancouver Island municipality's second-tallest building, Nanaimo News Now reports. The project, called Marcielo, is being put together by Vancouver-based Wertman Development Corp. The height of the building is significantly taller than the six-story height for which the land parcel is zoned, so planning approval was vital. The rezoning application still must win council approval, be aired at a public meeting and then be granted final approval, but the developer expressed optimism that work could begin in early 2019. Nanaimo's tallest building is the 28-story Cameron Island Building.
MANHATTAN CONDO BUILDING MAKING GOOD PROGRESS
Construction on an Upper East Side Manhattan, New York, residential high rise is making major progress, New York YIMBY reports. The 21-story building, at 147 East 86th Street, will bring 61 condominiums to an area mostly populated by lower-rise brownstones. In addition to 130,000 sq. ft. set aside for the units, which will range from two to five bedrooms, the building will offer 30,000 sq. ft. of retail space, a 24,000-sq.-ft. fitness center, a lounge, a children's playroom and a landscaped roof deck. Construction did not begin until the demolition of a previous structure completed in late 2017, and the new building has risen above the 13th floor.
TOWERS FOR PERTH'S SCARBOROUGH BEACH WIN APPROVAL
A twin-tower project that will rise as high as 43 stories gained approval from Perth, Australia, officials after developers reduced the overall size of the project, Australia's ABC News reports. The Chinese-backed developers 3 Oceans plan to build two mixed-use residential and hotel towers of 43 and 33 floors near the main beach. The taller tower will rise more than twice as high as the beach's current tallest building, the 18-story Rendezvous Hotel. Planning officials had earlier rejected a proposed AUD400-million (US$294-million) plan that called for 43- and 35-story towers. The new proposal cut the number of apartments from 346 to 314 and cut the number of hotel rooms from 158 to 119. It also cut the height of the second tower from 35 floors.

CO-OP CITY TAPS CHAMPION FOR MAINTENANCE, MODERNIZATION
Three-year-old Champion Elevator is taking on the maintenance and modernization of the elevators at Co-Op City, the largest cooperative housing development in the world, Mannreport Management recently reported. The modernization job totals US$36 million, plus a 24/7 maintenance contract for the 180 elevators in the Bronx, New York, development. Completed in 1973, it has more than 15,000 residential units in seven clusters of townhouses and 35 high rises, some of which are more than 30 stories tall with 500-fpm elevators. Its last modernization was at least 17 years ago. Work includes installation of nonproprietary equipment that will comply with 2020 door-interlock monitoring codes, as well as 2026 unintended-motion code requirements. Champion plans to use five repair teams, two testing teams and 24 modernization teams over the five-year modernization period.
KENCOR EARNS AQC ACCREDITATION FOR THE SECOND TIME
Kencor, Inc. Elevator Systems, headquartered in West Chester, Pennsylvania, has been named an Accredited Quality Contractor (AQC) by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) for the second time. Launched in 1993, ABC's AQC recognizes construction firms that have documented their commitment in five areas of corporate responsibility: quality, safety, employee benefits, training and community relations/diversity. Kencor Chief Operating Officer John Dodds said, "As the first-ever elevator contractor to have received this award, we are dedicated and committed in our continual pursuit to perform as a world-class organization."
ALIMAK WINS ORDER FOR NORDIC REGION’S FUTURE TALLEST
Developer Serneke has ordered five construction hoists able to handle winds of up to 25 mps from Alimak Group for construction of the Nordic region's future tallest building, Karlatornet, in Gothenburg, Sweden, designed by Skidmore Owings & Merrill (ELENET 720). Delivery is scheduled for March to October 2019 ahead of the building's completion in 2021. The order includes a MammothTM hoist with a payload of up to 5,500 kg. This is the first time the Mammoth will be used in Sweden. "Karlatornet will be a landmark building, and we are pleased to deliver the vertical-access solutions needed for the special requirements posed by the height and wind," Alimak Group CEO Tormod Gunsleiksrud said.
SEATTLE HIGH RISE SHIFTS FROM APARTMENT TO CONDO
Developers of SPIRE, a 41-story, residential high rise designed by VIA within sight of the Space Needle in downtown Seattle, announced on June 25 the building’s 352 units will be for-sale condominiums rather than rental apartments, Realogics Sotheby’s International Realty, which is co-developing SPIRE with Laconia Development, says. The change is in response to what Realogics Sotheby’s describes as “a paradigm shift in consumer trending from rent to buy.” It further notes more than 91% of the approximately 30,000 multifamily housing units being added downtown in the current decade were developed for rent. The SPIRE sales center is under construction at 2218 5th Avenue, just south of the development site at 600 Wall Street.
