KONE TO EQUIP TOWERS IN KUALA LUMPUR
KONE recently announced it won an order for 8 Conlay, a luxury mixed-use development located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The development consists of two branded residence towers called "YOO8 serviced by Kempinski." These 57- and 62-story blocks are complemented by a 68-story five-star Kempinski Hotel and serviced suites, and retail. KONE will equip the development with 36 MiniSpace™ high-rise elevators, five machine-room-less MonoSpace® elevators, a bespoke 4000-kg-capacity MonoSpace® glass elevator, and 20 TravelMaster™ escalators. Some of these elevators will travel at 7 mps. KONE's E-Link™ equipment-monitoring system is also included in the order. The project is expected to be completed in 2021.
WOMAN FALLS DOWN ELEVATOR SHAFT IN SOUTH AFRICA
A woman fell down an elevator shaft in an apartment building in Alberton, South Africa, on June 25, the Alberton Record reports. Firefighters and medical staff responded, and the woman was presumably transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries. A witness said when the woman stepped inside the elevator doors, the elevator was not there and she fell on top of a unit below. The witness said the building’s elevators have been problematic for more than 10 years, and called the incident “unacceptable and horrible.” Local authorities and property owners refused to comment.
NEW USES, DESIGN PLANNED FOR QUEBEC CITY'S LE PHARE
The Dallaire Group, developer of the Le Phare "live, work and play" development in Quebec City, Canada, has announced plans to include 400 senior residences within the four-tower complex, La Soleil reported in June. The announcement came in a meeting during which several changes to the project were noted, including an increase from 2.6 million to 3 million sq. ft., and a CAD155-million (US$117-million) increase in the investment, up from the earlier figure of CAD600 million (US$451 million). The heights of the towers will range from 17 to 65 stories, which is similar to those announced earlier. The senior apartments would be in the 50-story second tower. The Le Phare project will include a mix of residential and office space, as well as commercial establishments. Also planned for Le Phare are a hotel and other commercial uses. The developer is aiming for construction, which will take about a decade, to begin in early 2019.
35 HUDSON YARDS TOPS OUT IN NYC
New York YIMBY reports that 35 Hudson Yards in New York City (NYC) has topped out as the neighborhood's first supertall residential tower. With 72 stories making up its 1,009-ft. height, 35 Hudson Yards will have 137 private residences and a 217-key Equinox hotel. Retail space will be offered on the first and second floors, and resident amenities include a sky lobby, a ballroom and spa facilities. In total, the building, being developed by Related Cos. and Oxford Properties, will have a little more than 1.05 million sq. ft. of space. With its topping out, 35 Hudson Yards became the ninth-tallest building in NYC and the 19th tallest in the U.S.

  • Tallest Building West Of The Mississippi Planned In L.A.
Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
TALLEST BUILDING WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI PLANNED IN L.A.
Shenzhen New World Group and Dimarzio Kato Architecture hope to build a 77-story, 1,100-ft.-tall mixed-use tower at 333 South Figueroa Street in Los Angeles that would strip the Wilshire Grand of its "tallest building west of the Mississippi" title, The Architect's Newspaper reports. The glass-and-steel structure would take shape on the northeastern corner of a site that houses a 13-story, 1980s-era hotel, which would be converted into apartments. Envisioned are nearly 600 hotel rooms, 242 condominiums, 28,705 sq. ft. of commercial space and parking for 552 vehicles. Should it be built, the tower would become the fourth in the city to rise above 1,000 ft, joining the 1,100-ft.-tall Wilshire Grand, 1,018-ft.-tall U.S. Bank tower and 1,020-ft.-tall Angels Landing development by Handel Architects.
SEVEN ELEVATORS, HELIPORT PART OF BOLIVIAN GOVERNMENT PALACE
Seven elevators, including one for the exclusive use of Bolivian President Evo Morales, are among amenities that are part of the new government palace, "Great House of the People," inaugurated on June 21 in La Paz, Bolivia, Huffington Post France reports. The 29-story, 120-m-tall tower also has a rooftop heliport and two floors reserved for the president that include a presidential suite with a Jacuzzi, gym and massage parlor. Morales' detractors denounced the palace as a wasteful expenditure in a country where nearly 40% live below the poverty line. Another criticism is its height and style clashing with the nearby colonial-style buildings in the Bolivian capital.
SCULPTURAL LANDMARK FOR PORT OF AARHUS, DENMARK
C.F. MØller Architects has unveiled a 144-m-tall, 38-story office tower for the Port of Aarhus, Denmark, it describes as a "bright and slender sculptural landmark" that will provide 360˚ views, plenty of natural light and a blend of professional and public uses within 35,00 m2, ArchDaily reports. There will be a restaurant open to the public on the top floor. The structure's layered façades promise to "create optimum light conditions, attractive views and a healthy environment." A trio of cantilevering, vertical foyers will add texture and character. A 5,600-m2 industrial complex on the site will be repurposed to house a roof terrace, greenhouse and other tenants.
    CECA EVENTS ANNOUNCED
The Canadian Elevator Contractors Association (CECA) has announced its 45th annual convention, to take place at the Hilton Lac-Leamy in Ottawa on June 3-6, 2019. Prior to that, its seventh-annual Golf Classic will be held in nearby Gatineau, Canada, on September 14. To register and for more information, including updates, visit https://ceca-acea.org/ev.
GOVERNMENT REVIVES STALLED KUALA LUMPUR MEGA PROJECT
The Malaysian government is investing more than RM2.8 billion (US$697 million) into TRX City in Kuala Lumpur, a multitower development on 28 ha abandoned when the original developer used funding, including the equivalent of hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars from the government, to pay off unrelated debts, The Straits Times reports. Former Malaysian Premier Najib Razak launched TRX City, named for his father and former prime minister Tun Razak Hussein. The new government opted to provide financing for the infrastructure to avoid an eyesore in Kuala Lumpur and regain the trust of investors. Those investors include Mulia Property Development, which is building the 106-story The Exchange 106 and IJM Corp., which is building a 27-story office tower. Both are expected to be complete in early 2019.

The former hillside location of Angels Knoll Park in Los Angeles is set to be transformed into a 1.26-million-sq.-ft., mixed-use development that includes an 88- and 27-story towers, Architect's Newspaper reports. Handel Architects designed the buildings, and OLIN has been tapped to handle landscape design, which will feature terraces, amphitheaters, gardens and a connection to the Angel's Flight funicular. Poised to be among the tallest buildings in the city and western U.S. at 1,020 ft., the taller tower has a tapered design and will house condominiums, apartments and hotel rooms. “SUPER PENTHOUSE” ATOP 54-STORY NEW ZEALAND TOWER
A "super penthouse" spanning the top two floors of The Pacifica, a 54-story, 584-ft.-tall tower in Auckland, New Zealand, has hit the market with an asking price of NZ$35 million (US$24 million), Mansion Global reports. With floor-to-ceiling windows, the home will boast views of the Great Barrier Island, four bedrooms, numerous reception areas and a "sky garden" with double-height ceilings. This, according to Gavin Lloyd, national director of residential projects at CBRE, "allows the owners to bring some of New Zealand's beautiful nature indoors." Being developed by Melbourne-based Hengyi, The Pacifica will have a hotel on the first six floors. It is scheduled for completion by 2021.
DEVELOPER OF CANCELLED CANADA CONDO PLANS ANOTHER
Under fire from angry homebuyers left in the lurch when the Cosmos condominium project just north of Toronto in Vaughn was cancelled several months ago, Liberty Development Corp. is now planning another, The Globe and Mail reports. Designed by Dialog, the new plan calls for 962 residences in 33- and 39-story towers, along with a seven-story structure. Liberty is asking Vaughn officials for exemptions to both height and density requirements. The new plan was presented at a city council meeting on June 5, during which one Cosmos buyer said Liberty could not be trusted. The source said there were approximately 1,100 prospective Cosmos buyers, some of which formed a Facebook group to air their frustrations.

    THYSSENKRUPP EXPECTS MARKET SHARE GROWTH
ET Realty recently reported that thyssenkrupp Elevator India expects to increase its market share to 8-10% of the national market from the current single-digit level. Quoting Bharat Vishnani, managing director of the company, its growth "will be scaled to double-up in the next few years." The source said 60% of the company's revenue comes from the residential sector, while the rest comes from the commercial, hospitality, infrastructure and industrial segments. Vishnani sees an increase in the residential market, leading to greater elevator needs. "The affordable housing segment may majorly drive demand of elevators in three to four years," he added.

SENIORS PROTEST BROKEN ELEVATORS, MORE IN PUBLIC HOUSING
Approximately three dozen seniors gathered at the Chicago Housing Authority’s (CHA) downtown office on June 19 to protest a “crumbling elevator fleet” and what they say are dangerous living conditions in CHA senior homes throughout the city, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Organized by activist group Jane Addams Senior Caucus, the protest included a “die-in,” which involved seniors and their supporters lying on the floor in the lobby and singing the civil-rights song “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around.” In a statement, the CHA said the well-being of seniors has always been a priority, and work to upgrade 150 elevators will commence later this year as part of its Elevator Modernization Program.
HEIGHT REDUCTION FOR VIÑOLY-DESIGNED URUGUAY TOWER
The maximum height of Campanille, the main tower in the Casa Cipriani San Rafael multitower development in the southeastern Uruguay resort town of San Rafael, has been reduced from 67 to 40 floors, El Pais reports. Designed by Rafael Viñoly, the five buildings range from low to midrise and features steeped roofs and horizontal, bandlike windows. In addition to the height reduction for the main building to approximately 300 m, a bridge over Lorenzo Batlle Pacheco will likely be eliminated. Construction is expected to start by the end of this year.
