  • Otis Job in San Francisco Includes a Worldwide First
Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
OTIS JOB IN SAN FRANCISCO INCLUDES A WORLDWIDE FIRST
Otis has been selected to outfit the new Oceanwide Center in downtown San Francisco with 53 elevators and escalators. It will be the first development in the world to use the Otis CompassPlus® destination-dispatch system, which will allow the elevators to "more efficiently manage incoming, outgoing and interfloor traffic without having passengers travel back to the lobby or inconvenient transfer floors." Scheduled to open in 2022 in the South of Market neighborhood, Oceanwide Center consists of a 625-ft.-tall, 54-story residential/hotel and a 910-ft.-tall, 61-story residential/office tower along First Street.

EXTERNAL ELEVATOR FOR CHICAGO’s AON CENTER: DETAILS
Curbed Chicago has updated Chicago’s "battle for observation deck supremacy," involving 601W Cos., owner of the Aon Center, seeking approval to build a 1,000-ft.-long panoramic elevator to serve as a tourist attraction on its 82nd and 83rd floors. To cost US$185 million, the Solomon Cordwell Buenz-designed addition is angular to evoke the tower’s chevron-shaped vertical columns. A double-decker elevator enclosed in a glass shaft attached to the stone tower’s exterior would be among the tallest panoramic elevators in the world. Traveling at 1,200 fpm, it would also help alleviate overcapacity in the tower's current elevators. The source indicated the elevator and other proposed, related additions will require a zoning amendment, making them subject to city oversight and approval. However, construction could begin soon, as there is an optimistic timeline of a 2020 opening.

TAJIKISTAN PRESIDENT WANTS BELARUSIAN PLANT IN HIS COUNTRY
Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon is interested in Belarusian lift manufacturer Mogilevliftmash setting up an assembly plant in his country, Belarus News reports. Rahmon visited the Belarus National Expo, held in the Tajikistan capital Dushanbe, in May and familiarized himself with the company's elevators. The next step will be conducting a feasibility study on a potential plant, which would produce at least 500 elevators a year. Rahmon said a Mogilevliftmash facility in Tajikistan would serve not only the capital but the entire country, and create jobs.

    MOWREY EXPANDS TRAINING FACILITY
Mowrey Elevator Co. has expanded its Technical Training and Support Center (TTSC) at the company’s headquarters in Marianna, Florida. The 1,600-sq.-ft. addition increases the TTSC’s total floor space to 9,800 sq. ft., which the company said enhances its ongoing training program. The facility contains five working elevators, multiple test stands and a large multimedia conference room, as well as several offices for staff. The TTSC is part of Mowrey’s comprehensive manufacturing facility, which already covers more than 8 acres of manufacturing space. The TTSC provides training, technical support and continuing education to Mowrey’s workforce of more than 280 employees, as well as to the company’s partners and distributors and to first responders.
FOSTER+PARTNERS DESIGNS UNIQUE DRONE FIRM HQ IN SHENZHEN
Robot fighting rings, R&D areas and office space are part of the new Shenzhen, China, headquarters for DJI, consisting of a striking pair of towers designed by Foster + Partners, various news outlets, including New Atlas, report. Height and construction timeframe were unavailable as of May, but renderings reveal a "unique workplace" featuring towers with multiple glazed boxes and sky gardens cantilevering out from a central steel framework. The towers will be connected by a skybridge, which is also expected to be used for drone testing. Also set to include a theater and gymnasium, the large, column-free floors will accommodate quadruple-height drone flight-testing labs.
ESCALATOR ACCIDENT FATAL FOR 10-MONTH-OLD GIRL IN INDIA
A mall in India near the Pakistan border was the scene of a tragedy on May 10 when a 10-month-old girl slipped from her mother's arms over an escalator handrail and died on the scene, various news outlets, including the Daily Mail, report. Mother, father and child were traveling on the escalator to the fourth floor when the accident, which was captured on video, occurred. Witnesses said the mother lost her balance while taking a picture with her phone. Police investigated but said, "This is a clear-cut case of an accident."
TALLEST HOTEL IN CUBA PLANNED DESPITE CRITICISM
A real-estate subsidiary of GAESA, the military consortium in Cuba, could break ground in September on a 154-m-tall, 42-story hotel in Havana that would be Cuba's tallest hotel, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat reported, citing a report from América TeVé. With construction expected to take approximately four years, the 565-room structure is part of GAESA's plan to build 7,500 hotel rooms in Havana by 2025, which has been "strongly criticized" by a populace that points out government funds could be better spent on infrastructure repair. The Cuban State did not provide a cost estimate, but an anonymous source provided the conservative price tag of US$200 million.

SCHINDLER SELECTED FOR LARGE VIETNAM RESIDENTIAL PROJECT
Schindler has been selected to provide 25 elevators for the multitower, 1,840-unit South Saigon Residences in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a development of previous Schindler customer Phu My Hung Development Corp. The order includes S3300 and 5500 elevators, which offer design versatility, "green" technology and travel speed of up to 3 mps. Saigon South Residences is in a "prime location" on Nguyen Huu Tho Avenue and will provide nearly 70 onsite amenities including stores, education centers, a water park, gardens and sports facilities.
APARTMENT OWNER GROUP IN INDIA CALLS FOR ELEVATOR ARDS
Automatic rescue devices (ARDs) in elevators are being demanded by The Federation of Apartment Owners Associations (FAOA) in Ghaziabad, India, in light of numerous lift-related accidents, The Times of India reports. FAOA met with the local development authority on May 9, asking that ARDs — which bring the lift cabin to the nearest floor for passengers to exit in case of malfunction — be mandatory before completion certificates are issued. Since 2015, public-interest litigation has been pending in an Indian high court to enact a lift act in Uttar Pradesh that would include mandatory ARDs, following the lead of neighboring states. FAOA President Alok Kumar said the federation had previously sought a referendum requiring member housing societies to install ARDs, which has been done in nearby cities, but residents did not want to pay for them. A ruling by the authority would remedy that, he said.
CHILD RESCUED FROM ESCALATOR MISHAP IN CHINESE MALL
An off-duty police officer rescued a three-year-old girl from potentially serious injury on an escalator in a shopping mall in Zhengzhou, China, the Mirror reported on May 9. Video shows the child walking away from her mother to the outside of the balustrade, then grapping the handrail and being pulled upward. She was dangling approximately 65 ft. from the floor when the policeman ran up the steps and pulled her to safety.
TWO CONSTRUCTION WORKERS DIE IN ELEVATOR FALL IN FLORIDA
A construction lift attached to the side of a condominium building in Naples, Florida, plunged 70 ft. on May 9, resulting in the deaths of two construction workers who were on it, Fox 47 News reports. The Naples Fire Department confirmed the fatalities, and OSHA was on the Gulfshore Boulevard scene investigating.
    30-STORY MELBOURNE APARTMENT BUILDING COMPLETE
661 Chapel Street, a 30-story, 116-unit apartment building in Melbourne’s South Yarra, is complete and 70% sold, mostly to owner-occupiers from Australia, The Urban Developer reports. Designed by architecture firm Bird de la Coeur with floor-to-ceiling windows, it is Malaysian developer Gamuda Land’s first Australian project and has been under construction since 2016. Bank financing allowed Gamuda to complete the project in May, ahead of schedule. Gamuda says it intends to pursue other projects in Melbourne.
