  • Nevada Elevators Found Lacking Inspection Certificates

KONE has been selected to outfit Dubai Hills Mall in Dubai with 88 escalators, two inclined moving walks and 66 elevators. Being developed by Emaar Development PJSC and Meraas, the mall includes more than 650 retail outlets, a 6,000-m2 supermarket, an 18-screen cinema and outdoor concert areas. Pierre Liautaud, KONE executive vice president for South Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said the mall will become "a key venue for lifestyle experiences" at the 2,700-acre multipurpose Dubai Hills Estate, a "city within a city" that is the largest development of its kind in the region. Part of Mohammad Bin Rashid City, it consists of planned neighborhoods centered around an 18-hole championship golf course.

Nevada legislative auditors say that, as of June 30, 2017, 4,360 elevators in the state were operating without required inspection certificates — some of them for years, the Nevada Appeal reports. The audit report also said some units constructed since 2005 never received a final inspection to certify installation was in accordance with codes. Auditors blamed the Industrial Relations Division because it "relies entirely upon the owner to identify certificate expiration dates, schedule inspections and fix code violations," and, "no mechanism existed at the division to identify those with expired or soon to be expired certificates."

The deadline for the 2018 ELEVATOR WORLD Photo Contest has been extended to May 25, so companies and amateur photographers alike still have time to submit their entries. EW judges will first choose up to 20 finalists from each of the seven categories, including new category “Who Reads EW?” Those finalists will then be presented online through June 15, when readers will vote to decide the best of the best. Winners of each category will receive US$250 cash or the equivalent in Elevator World, Inc. educational products or advertising. Winners and runners-up from each category will be featured in the August issue of EW and highlighted. More information is available here, and the entry form is available here.

A Naperville, Illinois, woman and a university elevator foreman have been indicted on federal bribery charges in a case in which hundreds of thousands of dollars were paid to steer work to her company, the Naperville Sun reports. The owner of Smart Elevators Co. of Willowbrook, Illinois, is accused of paying more than US$200,000 to an elevator foreman at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). According to the indictment, UIC paid Smart Elevators more than US$5 million to service and repair campus elevators between 2011 and 2015. The two parties were each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit federal program bribery and three counts of federal program bribery, the source reported.

Site preparation has begun for a 35-story, Art Deco-inspired residential tower in Montreal, Skyrise Cities reports. Developer Broccolini plans 258 condominium units ranging from 470 to 4,000 sq. ft. for the tower dubbed 628 Saint-Jacques, and the building is proving popular — 80% of the units were snapped up only a week after sales opened to the public. The project will incorporate the existing Dominion Guarantee Co. building, a vintage, low-rise structure that influences the tower's overall design by architect NEUF. All residences will have access to bespoke amenities, from a members' lounge on the second floor to one of the highest outdoor pools in the city.

  • Otis Chosen For Willis Tower Elevator Modernization

OTIS CHOSEN FOR WILLIS TOWER ELEVATOR MODERNIZATION
Otis has been chosen by Equity Office to modernize the elevator system in Chicago's iconic Willis Tower, which is undergoing a US$500-million makeover. The contract includes 83 elevators and 97 passenger cabs, which will be upgraded to SkyRise® units using the CompassPlusTM destination-management system. It also includes machine rooms, motors, cables and controls and 10 years of maintenance service. Escalators at key points in the building will be removed, and upgraded security and turnstiles promise to further improve traffic flow. David Moore, senior vice president, Equity Office, observed more than 15,000 tenants and visitors use the elevators each day. The Otis modernization is expected to reduce travel time during peak hours by up to 30% and cut energy costs by approximately 35%. A video provides more in-depth information about the project.
PDERS WINS BIG LONDON MAINTENANCE CONTRACT
Lift and escalator service company PDERS, part of the Otis subsidiary Express Lift Co. (formerly ELA Group), has secured a new service contract from Paradigm Housing Group. PDERS will maintain 87 passenger and 136 accessibility units, including stairlifts and through-to-floor lifts, in London and The Midlands under a three-year contract. PDERS will work with sister company Foster & Cross, another unit of Express Lift Co., to provide an integrated service for residents across Paradigm Housing Group’s property portfolio.
MAJOR PROJECT TO UPGRADE PORTLAND TRANSIT ELEVATORS
TriMet, operators of the MAX light-rail system in Portland, Oregon, have launched a US$22-million project to modernize or replace 19 elevators over the next several years, FOX 12 News reports. Heavily used outdoor elevators serving stations in northeast Portland along the Blue, Green and Red lines are part of the project. In May, crews began work on the first of three elevators that will be upgraded this year — at North East 60th Avenue — a unit that has been in operation since 1986. Electronics, mechanical equipment, air-conditioning systems, panels and doors are being replaced, with TriMet performing work on three to five elevators each year for the next several years.
81% OF ESCALATORS INSTALLED ON PAKISTAN’S FIRST METRO LINE
Approximately 81% of the more than 260 escalators serving the Orange Line Metro Train (OLMT) in Lahore, Pakistan's first metro rail line, have been installed, reflecting progress on a project that promises to spur economic change for "thousands of ordinary citizens," UrduPoint reports. Spanning more than 27 km, OLMT will be served by 26 stations. Often mentioned as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, the line, funded by the Government of Punjab, India, is "being recognized internationally as a showcase of Pak-China friendship," the source said. During an OLMT progress meeting in May, it was revealed that nearly 88% of the civil and 66% of the electrical/mechanical work had been completed.
ELEVATOR-ONLY SKYTRAIN STATION ACCESS MULLED IN CANADA
TransLink is mulling a new, secondary entrance at the busy Burrard SkyTrain station in downtown Vancouver, Canada, that would provide access between street level and concourse exclusively through six, six-story elevators, the Daily Hive reports. Working with VIA Architecture, the transit authority said since the plan includes building horizontal, underground tunnels in limited space, the elevator option makes more sense than one involving escalators. Should SkyTrain build the elevator-only entrance on the east side of Burrard Street, it would be following the lead of cities such as Seattle and Hong Kong, which implemented such entrances at Beacon Hill and MTR West Island, respectively.

  • Alimak Hoists at London Residential High Rise Project
LONGEST ESCALATOR IN CANADA AT OTTAWA LRT STATION
Rideau Station, part of the new Ottawa Light Rail Transit (LRT) Confederation Line under construction, will have the longest transit escalator in Canada, the Ottawa Citizen reports. Located 26.5 m underground, the continuous unit will be approximately 35.5 m long, with a 15.8-m rise and 181 steps, carrying riders between the concourse and surface levels at Rideau Street and Sussex Drive. Responding to concern from Mayor Jim Watson that the escalator will be protected from harsh winter weather, Ottawa General Manager of Transportation John Manconi said it is covered, but keeping grit and sand out of the stairs will be an ongoing concern. If the infrastructure clears required tests, LRT service is set to start late this year. Otis Canada was awarded the contract for the work.
ALIMAK HOISTS AT LONDON RESIDENTIAL HIGH RISE PROJECT
Six Alimak Hek construction hoists are at work on two of the three South Quay Plaza buildings, a 200-m-tall residential development just south of Canary Wharf in London on the Isle of Dogs. Designed by Foster + Partners, South Quay Plaza is being developed by The Berkeley Group, and KONE is providing the vertical-transportation package. The hoists include a 100 mpm, 2X5-m Scando 650 SL FC-S and two TM Mammoth models, each with a capacity of 5500 kg. The contract includes design, installation, service and maintenance of the hoists through 2020. This is the fifth project in the London Docklands area to use Alimak Hek equipment.
TURKISH ELEVATOR INDUSTRY WOMEN UNITE, APPOINT PRESIDENT
Twenty-eight women involved in the elevator/escalator industry in Turkey united under the AYKSAD roof on February 14, and appointed Yasemin Bulut president. • Trio of Towers Part of Sydney Suburb’s Revitalization
Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast, sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
Aiming to aggressively expand its Turkish market presence in 2018, Hyundai Elevator has launched a new sales strategy that involves securing more orders for elevators with speeds of 105 mpm and buildings with 20 or fewer stories. This is in addition to a strategy targeting developers of large projects, which helped result in installation volume rising "exponentially" in 2016 to approximately 1,000. In 2017, the South Korean company focused sales efforts on government entities, private developers and large construction companies, winning work on such projects as Metropol and Water Garden, both in Istanbul.. After winning 225 elevator installation orders in Turkey in the first two months of 2018, Hyundai Elevator intends to join the top three companies in the Turkish market "at the earliest possible date."

Smithsonian.com recently examined energy efficiency in elevators, highlighting a few OEM technological advances and products designed to be efficient. For example, to help reduce wasted energy, Otis uses its CompassPlus® destination-dispatching system to remove elevators from service when traffic is light and offers the Gen2® Switch™, which works on solar and wind power, while requiring less energy than a hairdryer. thyssenkrupp, which the source calls “a pioneer in vertical technology,” is credited with creating “a sleeping elevator” that wakes on command. Otherwise, its lights, fan and drive are off. Brad Nemeth, vice president of sustainability at thyssenkrupp Elevator Americas explained, “We’re actually producing more energy than we’re consuming.”

High Street Group of Cos., headquartered in Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K., is betting big on demand for rental apartments, with projects underway or planned in U.K. cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and Salford totaling approximately GBP600 million (US$817 million), the Chronicle reports. High Street is preparing to build what will be Newscastle’s tallest building, Hadrian’s Tower, a 26-story structure with a sky lounge containing 162 apartments. The company also just purchased property in Birmingham. In all, High Street is bringing nearly 3,000 residences to the market.

A trio of 29-, 25- and 19-story apartment towers designed by Architectus and developed by Cbus Property is part of the rebirth of Epping, a northwest suburb of Sydney, that promises to see thousands of new homes delivered, SkyRise Cities reports. Located 100 m from Epping Train Station, The Langston will have approximately 460 apartments, along with 1,681 m2 of retail, 1,921 m2 of communal space and various infrastructure upgrades. Expected to start construction in January 2019, The Langston is part of the future Epping Town Centre, expected to deliver approximately 3,750 new homes within a short walk of the train station.

A 23-story tower designed by Antunovich Associates with 226 apartments, parking and 2,300 sq. ft. of retail is coming to the corner of Milwaukee Avenue and Carpenter Street in Chicago’s River West neighborhood, Curbed Chicago reports. Developers Tandem Partners and Rambaud Holdings aim to break ground later this year and finish the project, which could be branded as The Mill, in late 2019. Boasting a glass and brick façade, the development will set aside 45 units as “affordable” as one of the first large-scale projects to fall under the City of Chicago’s revised affordable-housing requirements. An existing low-rise building has been demolished, and a 40,000-sq.-ft. office building will be incorporated.
