Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
NEW ELEVATOR SYSTEM FOR STATE CAPITOL BUILDING IN BISMARCK
The 21-story, Great Depression-era North Dakota state capital building in Bismarck is getting a new, four-elevator system to replace an old one that includes motors that are original to the building, the Bismarck Tribune reports. Otis is performing the US$1.8-million job, which includes cables, cars and machinery. Facility Management Director John Boyle says the smart, energy-efficient system will “pay for itself in operational and energy savings.” A destination-dispatch system is expected to result in a 51% decrease in total travel time.
TODDLER BREAKS LEG IN ESCALATOR MISHAP IN INDONESIA
A three-year-old girl was hospitalized with a broken leg after getting her foot stuck in an escalator at mall in Bengkulu, Indonesia, on April 21, The Jakarta Post reports. The child and her mother were traveling on the down escalator hand in hand when the incident occurred. A shopkeeper turned off the device, and security guards freed the child’s foot.
ESCALATOR ATTENDANT COMING TO INDIAN RAIL STATION
Officials at Trichy Rail Station in southern India are in the process of hiring an attendant for its escalator that was inaugurated in 2016, The Times of India reports. The move is in response to the Train Travelers Association’s concern that some passengers, such as the elderly, women and children, have trouble navigating the conveyance and lose their balance. The source notes that at least one elderly person per day is treated at a local emergency center for injuries sustained on the escalator.
NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR INAUGURAL ELLIES AWARDS
The Ellies is a new awards program by ELEVATOR WORLD that recognizes North American elevator and escalator industry businesses that go above and beyond. Anyone can nominate a business, basing nominations on such aspects as quality, customer service, charity/association/committee/educational participation, safety education and awareness, and a positive work environment. Winners in each of the six categories will be announced in the December 2018 issue of EW and receive an official Ellies statuette, and a custom "Winner" logo to use for print and on websites/emails. The contest is open to North American companies (those in the U.S., Canada and Mexico). The Deadline for nominations is May 31, and finalists in each category will be announced on June 15.
MIXED-USED TOWER PROPOSED NEAR CENTRAL PARK IN NYC
New York YIMBY reports that developer Solow Management Corp. has filed permits for a 52-story, 672-ft.-tall mixed-use skyscraper at 12 West 57th Street, just south of Central Park in New York City (NYC). The building would include 383,000 sq. ft. of floor space, of which 202,738 sq. ft. would go to 80 residential units. The remainder would be for commercial use, though the filing was not specific about that part of the plan. The source speculated, however, that it might include a hotel with dining, or back-of-house or ground-floor retail. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill was listed as the building's designer.

Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
THYSSENKRUPP AND PARTNER OUTFIT PAKISTAN MALL
thyssenkrupp and strategic partner Global Business Bridge Ltd. have installed 32 elevators and 28 escalators at Pakistan's second-largest shopping center, Emporium Mall in Lahore. Covering 250,000 m2, the complex includes a hotel and conference center and sees approximately 44,000 visitors a day. The vertical-transportation solutions transport more than 3,500 passengers per hour. German Ambassador Martin Kobler and Pakistani entrepreneur Mian Mohammad Mansha attended the grand opening. Observing that Pakistan is an attractive distributor market — one of the five most important worldwide — thyssenkrupp said there is demand for approximately 1,000 new elevators per year.
NEW ELEVATORS IMPROVE ACCESS FOR PHILLY COMMUTERS
Life is about to get a little easier for commuters who use the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) 15th Street station in Philadelphia, as upgrades to the facility will include elevators, The Philadelphia Tribune reports. The station, plus another SEPTA facility at City Hall, are undergoing overhauls of a combined US$146 million. The work includes 14 new elevators, some of which are already operational. SEPTA currently has elevators at the 15th Street station and is in compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act, but the new elevators will expand capacity and add locations for accessibility, a spokesperson said. The work is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2019.
WORKER KILLED IN HOISTWAY AT CONSTRUCTION SITE
OSHA is investigating the death of an Ohio man who was working in the pit of a hoistway when the elevator car dropped on top of him, The Columbus Dispatch reports. The 45-year-old man was on the construction site of the five-story Mount Carmel Grove City Hospital in Grove City, Ohio, on April 18 when the car fell on him. Paramedics who responded to the call pronounced him dead at the scene. Construction at the site has been ongoing, the source said, and the facility's targeted opening date is in November.
LARGE PROJECT WITH PAIR OF TOWERS PLANNED IN HOLLYWOOD
Developer MP Los Angeles aims to start construction in 2022 on Hollywood Center, a US$1-billion, 1,005-unit residential project designed by Handel Architects distinguished by a pair of curving towers in downtown Hollywood, The Architect's Newspaper reports. Seismic concerns involving the property, currently occupied by a pair of parking lots that surround the Louis Naidorf-designed Capitol Records building, were alleviated after expert assessment and extensive geological testing. The plan includes glass-clad 46- and 25-story towers joined by a pair of 11-story apartment buildings containing "the largest number of affordable-dwelling units of any development in the history of the city."

  • UTC Unveils Center For Intelligent Buildings in Florida
Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
UTC UNVEILS CENTER FOR INTELLIGENT BUILDINGS IN FLORIDA
United Technologies Corp. (UTC) officials cut the ribbon on April 17 for UTC's US$115-million, 224,000-sq.-ft. Center for Intelligent Buildings in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, WLRN Public Radio reports. Bob McDonough, UTC Climate, Controls & Security president, observes the facility showcases features of the company's heating, ventilation and air conditioning; elevator; escalator; fire/security; and building-automation offerings that are typically hidden, such as escalator belts. Florida Governor Rick Scott praised the move as a job generator that will provide an economic boost for years to come. The center currently employs 130, and expects to add another 130 jobs by 2021. McDonough states more than 6,000 business customers will visit the center, located in the I-95 corridor, in the first year.

ELEVATORS BEING CONSIDERED FOR HISTORIC MISSOURI BRIDGE
A pair of elevators on either side of the historic Jefferson Avenue footbridge in Springfield, Missouri, would bring the attraction into compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act, the Springfield News-Leader reports. City leaders are leaning toward the US$2.3-million plan, which would be funded primarily by federal grants and include lighting. Council members described the bridge, built in 1902, as "integral to the economic vitality of Commercial Street, populated by local shops and restaurants, and a "Springfield icon." The bridge, which is in need of repairs, has been closed for more than two years and was last renovated in the early 2000s.

CHILD SHAKEN BUT UNHARMED AFTER GLASGOW ESCALATOR MISHAP
Medical, police and fire personnel responded on April 19 to an incident at Glasgow Science Centre in Glasgow, Scotland, in which the shoe of a five-year-old boy on a school trip became trapped at the bottom of the center’s escalator, Glasgow Live reports. The entrapment caused the escalator to stop, and the boy’s shoe was quickly freed. He was taken to a hospital as a precaution but was “up and walking and wearing a police officer’s hat” later that afternoon, according to a Science Centre spokeswoman.

DEVELOPER OF “LAST” DUBAI MARINA TOWER PLEASED BY RESPONSE
L-I-V Real Estate Development announced sales of units in the 27-story LIV Residence Dubai Marina on the waterfront have successfully completed and that phase two sales have started, Arabian Business reports. Located on the "last prime plot" of Dubai Marina land, LIV contains studios to penthouses, and residents will enjoy a range of amenities, such as a pool, a gym and gardens. L-I-V CEO Latif Habib said the development has attracted a good mix of investors of all nationalities. Construction is ahead of schedule, and completion is anticipated in the second quarter of 2019.

SCHINDLER DESTINATION DISPATCH ON LINE’S LARGEST SHIP
Florida-headquartered Carnival Cruise Lines' Horizon, the largest vessel in its fleet, is the first to be outfitted with a destination-dispatch elevator system, Travel Weekly reports. Carnival tells ELEVATOR WORLD Schindler provided the system. Carnival officials told the source passengers are "curious and cautious" with the system for the first few days, then find it very user friendly. Horizon embarks approximately 1,800 people an hour on embarkation days, when the system is reprogrammed to stop only at certain decks. The ship had its maiden voyage out of Barcelona earlier this month. Starting in September, Horizon is scheduled to cruise to the Caribbean out of Miami.

1,000-FT.-HIGH OBSERVATION DECK TAKING SHAPE IN NYC
With construction officially underway, a 1,000-ft.-high outdoor observation deck is expected to open sometime in 2019 on the 100th floor of 30 Hudson Yards on New York City’s (NYC) far West Side, Curbed New York reports. The deck consists of 15 sections weighing up to 100,000 lb. each, and will boast 7,500 sq. ft. of viewing space with windowed floors, as well as a 10,000-sq.-ft. restaurant/event area. Described as the future highest deck of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, the structure is part of a Kohn Pedersen Fox-designed retail/commercial building being developed by Related Cos. and Oxford Properties Group in the larger Hudson Yards development.

OCTOBER GROUNDBREAKING EXPECTED FOR MILWAUKEE TOWER
Couture, a 44-story tower on the downtown Milwaukee lakefront (ELENET 638) that was delayed as Barrett Lo Visionary Development LLC negotiated construction costs, looks to break ground by October, the Journal Sentinel reports. Located at 909 E. Michigan Street, Couture is set to have 312 apartments, 52,000 sq. ft. of retail/restaurant space and a transit concourse that will accommodate Milwaukee's new downtown streetcar. J.H. Findorff & Son Inc. is the general contractor on the US$122-million development, part of an ongoing revitalization of downtown that includes the Lakefront Gateway area. Construction is expected to take approximately two-and-a-half years.

NEW GOLD LANDMARK FOR JAKARTA SKYLINE
Jakarta, Indonesia, has a striking new addition to its skyline: headquarters for telecommunications company Telkom featuring a 48-story, 219-m-tall gold tower designed by Woods Bagot, SkyRise Cities reports. In addition to Telkom Landmark Tower, the central business district development includes a 20-story office building, a six-story podium and revitalized 16-story building. Woods Bagot Principal Patrick Daly observed features such as a podium bridge and multifloor atriums "reinforce [the idea of] a cohesive culture and connected campus." The tower's façade blends form and function, with metal screens inspired by Indonesian textiles and sunshades that reduce heat gain and filter sunlight.
