Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. Today's podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
THYSSENKRUPP OPENS HIGH-SPEED TEST TOWER IN CHINA
thyssenkrupp said a 248-m-tall test tower, one of the tallest in the world, "stole the show" at an opening ceremony for its new plant in Zhongshan City, China, on March 23. With 31 stories above ground and 13 shafts, the tower will be used to test high-speed elevators and the ropeless MULTI system. The plant and tower represent a US$128-million investment and point to the company's continued investment in China, its largest Asian market. New concepts and pilot products, including an elevator reaching speeds of up to 18 mps, will be tested in the tower, which is approximately the same height as thyssenkrupp's 246-m-tall tower in Rottweil, Germany. The tower is outfitted with an active mass damper system that significantly reduces sway caused by changes in weather conditions, and mimics extreme conditions such as earthquakes and typhoons.
LAWMAKER CALLS FOR ELEVATOR REPAIR AT LIRR STATION
New York State Senator John E. Brooks took part in a rally by commuters on March 23 calling for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to fix the elevator and other handicap-access facilities at the Wantagh station, Patch.com reports. The rally came in response to repeated reports of a broken or stalling elevator causing people to miss trains or forcing them to go to other stations. The source said that on two separate occasions, emergency personnel had to rescue 11 people after they were trapped in the stalled elevator. "Once again, we are calling on the LIRR to meet the needs of all their customers, including commuters and travelers with disabilities and mobility issues," Brooks told the gathering.
MAN HURT AFTER CLOTHING BECOMES CAUGHT IN ESCALATOR
A man seriously injured his hand while riding an escalator on March 24 at a rail station in Malden, Massachusetts, The Boston Globe reports. Officials with the Malden Fire Department said the man was on an escalator at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) Malden Center station about 8 p.m. when his clothing and then his arm became caught in the escalator. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment. An MBTA spokesman said it was “unclear why he fell.”
PRAGUE METRO TO UPGRADE ESCALATORS AT STATION
As part of a push to save energy, the Prague Public Transport Co. is planning to upgrade escalators at the Palmovka Metro station, Prague.tv reports. City officials in the Czech Republic capital have approved a subsidy to modernize the escalators, making them safer, and more energy efficient and economical. Money was also approved to upgrade the main air ventilation systems in the Metro A, B and C lines. “We are striving to improve the environment in Prague," City Councilor Irena Ropková said on the city hall website.

Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. Today's podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
EHC GLOBAL NEWS: SAFETY AWARD, KEY HIRE
EHC Global has won a safety award and hired a general manager for its Spain and Portugal operations. A program of the Ontario Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), the 2017 Impact Safety Award recognizes organizations that have made significant contributions to safety that go “above and beyond” regulatory compliance. TSSA Director of Elevating and Amusement Devices Roger Neate said products such as EHC’s NT SafeRailTM handrail “fit nicely with TSSA’s own efforts in addressing safety on escalators.” EHC was featured in TSSA’s 2019 annual report and featured in a video produced by TSSA. EHC also recently announced Miguel Chías González-Blanch as general manager of EHC Spain and Portugal. Based in Seville, Spain, he will report directly to Central Region Managing Director Norma Rosnersky and be responsible for growing EHC’s market presence in the Iberian Peninsula. Prior to joining EHC, Chías was operations manager of MP Lifts in Seville. He holds degrees in Law and Economics from the Pablo de Olavide University in Seville.
SHANGHAI AGENCY TO FACILITATE NEW ELEVATORS
An agency has been set up in Shanghai to help residents get elevators installed in older buildings, Shine reports. About 220,000 residential buildings in Shanghai lack elevators, and of the one million households within these buildings, nearly 40% include people more than 60 years old. The Jiajiale Elevator Installation Studio was created to streamline approval from a years-long process to about three months. The procedure involves receiving approval from separate government authorities and often involves coordination with gas and power providers. The typical CNY700,000 (US$110,570) cost of the installation will be divided among residents according to a formula that charges more to those living on higher floors, but the city will subsidize 40% of the amount. Regulations require that 90% of a building's residents agree to the project before elevators can be installed.

  • Two-Tower "Culinary Quarter" Approved for West London
Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. Today's podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
WORK ON FIFTH-TALLEST BUILDING TO START THIS YEAR
Construction is scheduled to begin in Dubai this year on what will be the world's fifth-tallest building, ConstructionWeekOnline.com reported in March. The 122-story, 570-m-tall tower, being developed by Azizi Developments at a site on Sheikh Zayed Road, will house residential apartments, topped by 22 floors for a luxury hotel. The developer is in consultation with architectural firm Atkins to finalize the design and plans to begin construction in the third quarter. The AED3-billion (US$816-million) skyscraper is scheduled for completion between 2021 and 2022, though Azizi is hoping to deliver the building on a fast-track basis, as quickly as 39 months.

    CARLSBAD REPAIR, MODERNIZATION REACHES MILESTONE
The repair and modernization of the primary elevator system at Carlsbad Caverns National Park in Carlsbad, New Mexico, reached a milestone in March, when the new motors were installed, U.S. News and World Report said in an article, citing the Associated Press. The system, installed in 1955, was shut down in November 2015 when a 6-in. motor shaft sheared off. The repair and modernization began in December 2017. The motors, installed with the use of a large crane, weigh 7,300 lb. and have a lift capacity of 4,000 lb. A park official said the next step will be to install new guide rails. Until the work is complete, access to the caverns is being accommodated by use of secondary elevators and a nature trail.

CANBERRA'S TALLEST TOWER WINS GOVERNMENT APPROVAL
The Urban Developer reports that a developer has received approval from the Australian Capital Territory government for a AUS1-billion (US$770-million) project that will include Canberra's tallest building. "Republic," as the development is known, will be delivered over three phases and will bring 1,213 residential units, a hotel precinct, an amphitheater and retail to the Belconnen district. There will be three high rises, the tallest of which will stand 27 stories, or 113 m, and sport a 100% glazed facade. The developer is Canberra-based Geocon, and the architect is Fender Katsalidis, which is known for several iconic developments around Australia.

ESCALATOR STEP FALLS OFF AT THAILAND TRANSIT STATION
The operator of Bangkok's BTS Skytrain transit system launched systemwide safety checks after a step fell off an escalator at one of the stations serving the Thailand capital, the Bangkok Post reports. A passenger posted on social media that she was about to step on the escalator at the Phaya Thai station on March 19 when the step fell, adding that she narrowly escaped injury. Station personnel immediately closed access to the escalator, which had automatically stopped. The Bangkok Mass Transit System, operator of the system, checked all its escalators as a precaution. The broken escalator was repaired, checked and put back in service the next day.

TWO-TOWER "CULINARY QUARTER" APPROVED FOR WEST LONDON
U.K. architecture firm Scott Brownrigg has gained approval for two mixed-use towers that will transform the west London borough of Acton into a "Culinary Quarter," Global Construction Review reports. The towers, occupying a 7,500-m2 site, will house restaurants, shops and "innovation suites" for tasting, researching and developing food. There will also be 40 serviced offices and 376 residential rental units. The taller tower, at 114 m, will have 36 stories, while the other will stand 82 m and hold 26 floors. Developer Dephna said the project aims to attract small food producers, including internet-based outlets, that cannot afford an entire restaurant.

SHORTLIST OF ARCHITECTS FOR SYDNEY LANDMARK BUILDING
The Urban Developer reports developers Mirvac and Coombes Property Group have announced a shortlist of six architecture firms or teams to design what could be the tallest residential tower in Sydney. They are FJMT, Bates Smart, an Architectus and Ingenhoven team, a Skidmore Owings & Merrill and Crone team, Foster + Partners, and Wilkinson Eyre. The developers have been approved for a 260-m-tall building with a retail podium, apartments, a hotel and two childcare centers on 4,208 m2 at 505 George Street, described by Mirvac Head of Residential Stuart Penklis as the "spine" of the global city of Sydney. The winner is to be announced by mid year.

STRIKING NYC CONDO TOWER IS ALMOST COMPLETE
A striking addition to New York City’s Lower East Side, One Manhattan Square at 252 South Street, is eyeing a 2019 completion with only 12 floors of cladding to go before its exterior is finished, New York YIMBY reports. The 80-story, 850-ft.-tall residential building will be the neighborhood's "first legitimate" skyscraper, the source said. It will contain 815 condominiums and be one of the largest such projects in the city. Included in the Extell development will be an adjacent 13-story building that will house more than 200 “permanently affordable" rental apartments. Adamson Associates handled the design, which features sky-blue and black curtain walls with tilted glass panels that reflect the sky.

WOODS BAGOT’S URBAN OASIS IN THE “HAWAII OF CHINA”
Architecture firm Woods Bagot is celebrating the completion of Sunshine Insurance Finance Plaza, a 37-story mixed-use building in Sanya Bay, a resort area often described as the “Hawaii of China” on the southern tip of China’s Hainan Island, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat reports. Housing offices, a Hyatt hotel and — within four orb-shaped podiums — retail and public spaces, the new headquarters for the Chinese insurance provider has a curved shape that helps disperse heat from the strong western sun. At the base, it is heavily landscaped with indigenous flora and fountains to create an “urban oasis.”
