Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
XIZI ELEVATOR ENTERING AFRICA THROUGH AGREEMENT
Eliel Jerameal Nigeria Ltd. has been granted exclusive rights by China’s Xizi Elevator to distribute, sell, install and service Xizi elevator and escalator equipment in the African market, Vanguard reports. Nigeria, along with other developing West African countries, including Cameroon and Ghana, stand to benefit, as Xizi products will be more affordable than those of competitors, says Eliel Chairman Ayo Adefmi.
MALAYSIAN FIRM TO SUPPLY 114 ESCALATORS TO LRT LINE
Malaysia-based EITA Resources has won a contract to supply, install and commission 114 escalators to the new, 37-km Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 3 in Klang, Malaysia, the Nikkei Asian Review reports. Including a 35-km viaduct and 2-km underground tunnel, the line is being developed by Prasarana Malaysia and is scheduled for completion by August 2020. Railway Technology observes the project is expected to stimulate the economy and create approximately 2,000 jobs during construction.
15 HUDSON YARDS TOPS OUT, READIES FOR OCCUPANCY
Related Cos. and Oxford Properties Group's 15 Hudson Yards has topped out at 88 stories and 910 ft. in February, on track for residents to move in by the end of the year, New York YIMBY reports. As it nears completion, its design by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, with a distinctive cloverleaf crown, is becoming clearer. The building is 15 ft. taller than 10 Hudson Yards, the first major building in the far West Side Hudson Yards mixed-use development. Including event venue the Culture Shed, 15 Hudson Yards will have 285 condominiums and approximately 100 "affordable" housing units.
CONTRACT LET FOR AYKON CITY TOWER
Damac Properties has awarded a US$163-million contract to China State Construction Engineering Corp. for the main construction of a tower at its Aykon City master development, ConstructionWeekOnline reports. The work has already begun on the Dubai high rise, to include 53 residential floors, two basements, a ground floor and 10 podium levels, in addition to a dedicated lifestyle and entertainment level. The 372,000-m2 Aykon City plan consists of residences, serviced apartments, a hotel and office space on Sheikh Zayed Road near the Dubai Canal.
BRISBANE PLAN INCLUDES 39-STORY COMMERCIAL TOWER
QIC, the investment arm of the Queensland, Australia, government, is proposing a plan by Cardno to build a 39-story commercial tower and revitalize three nearby buildings known as the QIC Triplets, The Urban Developer reports. Designed by architects Bureau Proberts, the tower would take the place of a low-rise building at 62 Mary Street in Brisbane, Australia. Architectus has been tapped to help deliver the overall masterplan, which includes restaurants, retail and conference facilities to help create “an active and vibrant commercial precinct.” QIC’s application is being reviewed by the Brisbane City Council.

    IN MEMORIAM: LOUIS BLAIOTTA, SR.
Louis “Lou” Blaiotta, Sr., founder and chairman of Columbia Elevator Products Co., Inc., died peacefully on March 1 at Calvary Hospital in Bronx, New York, at the age of 85. After working at the Williamsburg Elevator Products Division for several years, in the mid 1960s, he presented his employers, the Katz family, with a "different" concept of marketing elevator entrances and cabs to independent elevator contractors, but the Katzes did not accept it. Blaiotta gave nine months’ notice that he wished to pursue his concept on his own. This resulted in the formation of Columbia. His company went on from humble beginnings as a 10,000-sq.-ft. facility in Port Chester, New York, to become one of North America’s largest independent elevator architectural products manufacturers, with nearly 300,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing and engineering facilities located in Bridgeport, Connecticut; Miami; and Winfield, Kansas. Blaiotta was a member of many industry associations, boards and committees. He received the prestigious National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) Distinguished Service Award (now the William C. Sturgeon Distinguished Service Award) in 1991, and, in 2013, he was presented with honorary lifetime NAEC membership. Blaiotta is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marie, three children and three grandchildren: Margaret (married to Paul) Gilhooley and daughter, Maria; Dione (married to Tom) Birdsall and son, Dillon; and Louis "L.J." (married to Laura) Blaiotta, Jr. and daughter, Alexandra.

Gustav Wolf will be putting a new management team in place and investing in new machinery to increase output. MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC SPIRAL ESCALATORS PART OF KUWAIT ORDER
A pair of Mitsubishi Electric's proprietary spiral escalators are part of a 133-unit order for The Avenues, one of Kuwait's largest shopping centers with more than 800 stores. Joining 69 elevators and 64 escalators, the spiral escalators "lend an atmosphere of architectural elegance and sophistication to the large atrium of the mall's 'Prestige' luxury-shopping district," Mitsubishi Electric said. Each spiral escalator carries up to 27 passengers at a speed of 60 mpm. Operated by Mabanee Co. S.A.K., The Avenues held its soft opening in February.
38-STORY CONDO TOWER WITH PARKING FOR DOWNTOWN L.A.
After five years, the Los Angeles City Planning Commission has approved developer Barry Shy's plans to build a 38-story condominium tower with six levels of podium parking in L.A.'s historic core at Sixth and Main streets, Curbed L.A. reports. Including 467 condos, 21,500 sq. ft. for ground-level retail and 860 parking spaces, the design for SB Omega by architect David Takacs features foliage atop the podium, balconies with perforated metal screens and vertical landscaping. Nearby residents would also use the parking, which was applauded by both city leaders and residents.
REGISTER TO EXHIBIT IN NAEC EXPO
Organizers of the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) 69th Annual Convention & Exposition in Atlantic City, New Jersey, are inviting interested parties to exhibit at the largest vertical-transportation event in North America on September 24-27. Approximately 2,000 industry professionals are expected to participate. • Mitsubishi Electric Corp. to Begin Operating South Korean Elevator Plant
Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. Today’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
MEKC TO BEGIN OPERATING SOUTH KOREAN ELEVATOR PLANT
Mitsubishi Electric Corp. subsidiary Mitsubishi Electric Korea Co. (MEKC) plans to begin operating a new US$27-million factory in the Incheon Free Economic Zone of South Korea on March 1. Including an R&D center and a 95-m-tall test tower, the facility is expected to expand current production capacity by two-and-a-half times, to 4,000 units annually. The new, 19,070-m2 factory employs approximately 120 and is expected to help Mitsubishi Electric expand its global business and increase its market share in South Korea. The focus will be on both high-speed, high-rise elevators for regions like the Middle East and elevators tailored for South Korea’s low- to mid-rise market.

LARGE PROJECT WITH 30-PLUS-STORY BUILDINGS OK’D IN LONDON
Planning permission has been granted for a major mixed-use development on 11 ha in Newham, East London, that will include 1,020 homes, a school, shops, offices, community and leisure space, The Architects’ Journal reports. Patel Tayler is the developer of the former Parcelforce courier service depot site, with the application outlining five 20-story or taller buildings and two in excess of 30 stories. Despite being contrary to Newham's tall-building policy, it was ruled public benefits of the development will "outweigh any harm caused by the scale and massing."

ESCALATORS FOR BUSY CENTRAL INDIA RAIL STATION
Patna Junction, the main rail station for the capital of the state of Bahir in central India, is getting two new escalators, which promise to ease passenger flow and minimize the chaos that can occur during arrival and departure times, The New Indian Express reports. Part of East Central Railways’ overall effort to improve passenger amenities at stations across the state, the escalators are expected to be operational by the end of March.

IMPROPER ESCALATOR USE LEADS TO CRITICAL INJURY IN LAS VEGAS
A 21-year-old man was critically injured after he attempted to slide down an escalator handrail at a shopping and entertainment complex in Las Vegas in the early morning hours of September 24 and fell from the second floor, The Mercury News reports. Witnesses and security footage indicate the man was intoxicated. He was taken to a local hospital and listed in critical condition. A police official says such accidents can be avoided by always using amenities, such as escalators, as intended.

NEW ELEVATORS PART OF HOUSTON CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE PLAN
A new bank of at least three elevators is part of a plan Harris County officials are considering to make the storm-damaged and inefficiently laid-out Harris County Criminal Court building in Houston more accessible and inviting, the Houston Chronicle reports. District Clerk Chris Daniel tells the source an elevator-traffic analysis determined peak loads, times and destinations. A new, open-floor layout on the first floor will put passengers in a line, similar to at an airport, and they will choose the elevator based on their destination to floors 2-10 or 10-20. Flood damaged by Hurricane Harvey in 2017, the facility contains nearly 40 courtrooms and the district attorney’s and public defender’s offices.
