ELEVATORS ENHANCE ACCESSIBILITY AT MONTREAL METRO STATION
Accessibility proponents in Montreal are applauding Société de Transport de Montréal’s (STM) construction of two elevators at the Du College metro station in St. Laurent, CTV News Montreal reports. Part of an ongoing focus on greater accessibility, the project was accelerated thanks to government subsidies. Twelve of nearly 70 Montreal metro stations are considered fully accessible now, and STM has vowed to make the entire system accessible by 2038. The Du College station elevators are scheduled to be operational by the end of the summer, and STM plans to begin work on five other stations before the end of the year.
SELECTIVE TENDER ISSUED FOR NSW HOSPITAL PROJECT
The government in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, has solicited bids from KONE, Liftronic Pty. Ltd., Otis, thyssenkrupp Elevator Australia, Electra Lift Co. and Schindler for a project to modernize eight elevators at Wollongong Hospital in Wollongong and one at Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital in Nowa. Being paid for through the NSW government’s Asset Refurbishment and Replacement Program, the project will entail the lifts being modernized one at a time to minimize disruption to hospital staff, patients and visitors.
CHINESE ELEVATOR SALES PROJECTED TO RISE THIS YEAR
Elevator sales in China are expected to rise 15% in 2018 compared to a year ago, fueled primarily by a domestic real-estate industry that rallied in 2016, SHINE reports. In 2016, the National Bureau of Statistics reported 1.57 m2 of homes in China sold, an annual increase of more than 22%. An industrial analyst observed elevator sales kick in approximately two years after residences are constructed.

CONSTRUCTION ON JEDDAH TOWER REACHES 63RD FLOOR
Construction on the future world’s tallest building, the approximately 1-km-tall Jeddah Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, has reached the 63rd of what could ultimately be more than 200 floors, ConstructionWeekOnline.com reports. A contract to build the infrastructure was awarded in January, and shelling and cladding work is expected to be complete next year. Citing Reuters, the source said the CEO of developer Jeddah Economic Co. (JEC) has acknowledged delays due to technical challenges and a Saudi Arabian crackdown on corruption that affected several JEC investors. He said he hopes to have Jeddah Tower “open for business” by 2020.
    CEA EVENTS UPDATED, ANNOUNCED
The Chicago Elevator Association (CEA) has announced a location and date change for its March meeting. It will take place at The Clubhouse in Oak Brook, Illinois on March 1 and feature a guest speaker from Helios. Those interested in attending should RSVP. The next meeting will take place on April 5 and host a guest speaker from GAL Manufacturing Corp. CEA will also be holding its scholarship fundraiser on May 17 and Chicago cruise to benefit the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation on June 27.
CONTROVERSIAL NEW ITV CENTER GREENLIT IN LONDON
Despite opposition, a plan for new headquarters for broadcaster ITV London that consists of a multistory headquarters building of up to 14 stories and a 31-story residential tower has been greenlit by lawmakers in London's Lambeth district, Building Design reports. The plan includes 214 homes, 44,434 m2 of office space and 216 m2 of retail. Opponents call the design by Hopkins Architects bland and say it will ruin a prominent, open patch of land on the Thames River. Planning officers contend the buildings are similar in height to nearby neighbors and that the two tallest elements of the headquarters building will be separated by a glazed atrium, meaning the building "does not appear as one, large imposing block."
    ARCHI-TREAD OBTAINS U.S. PATENT
Following growth that entailed relocating its Northeast U.S. manufacturing operations and expanding into Canada, Archi-Tread®, manufacturer of Sillskin® elevator-sill systems, was recently awarded a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark office for its sill systems. Archi-Tread expects its patent application in Canada to be approved “very soon.”

KONE LOOKS TOWARD SECOND PLANT IN INDIAN STATE
KONE expects commercial production at its new elevator/escalator plant in Sriperumbudur near Chennai, its second such facility in Tamil Nadu, India, to begin by mid 2019, Outlook reports. The plant will cater to the domestic market, as well as neighboring countries like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, according to KONE India Managing Director Amit Gossain. He shared that KONE has 20% of a domestic market that totals approximately 50,000-55,000 units annually. Approximately 95% of KONE's domestic vertical-transportation business is elevators. Observing India’s Goods and Services Tax and demonetization created a 5-7% growth dip in the sector, Gossain is optimistic looking forward, due to government plans to build housing and improve rail-system accessibility.

Firings, arrests and resignations followed a January 30 elevator fall at Banha University Hospital in Banha, Egypt, in which seven people died and four others were injured, Ahram Online reports. The dean of the hospital’s Faculty of Medicine and the head of the hospital resigned, a number of administrative and engineering directors were let go, and officials from the company responsible for maintaining the elevator were ordered to be arrested. Prosecutors are still investigating, but it was previously found the main wire operating the elevator was damaged, and there was no anti-fall device.

The 599-ft.-tall structure at 30 East 29th Street will have 167,700 sq. ft. of residential space, out of a total 226,350 sq. ft. Its 123 units will average 1,363 sq. ft. each. Amenities include a pool, fitness center, squash room, lobby and storage for 70 bicycles, as well as a 34th-floor lounge with two outdoor terraces. The developer, The Rockefeller Group, applied for permits to demolish three structures at the site in September 2017, but has released neither a design rendering nor an estimated completion date.
