  • Developer Eyes Amazon-Sized Project for Atlanta
Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
280-M-TALL HOTEL TOWER IN TAIPEI INSPIRED BY BAMBOO
Curved edges, an angled tip and a grooved green façade distinguish Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel's (ACPV) design for the 280-m-tall Taipei Sky Tower (TST) planned by local developer Riant Capital Ltd. in the Xinyi shopping and financial district, dezeen reports. APVC will also design interiors for Park Hyatt Taipei, one of two Hyatt hotels that aim to occupy TST by 2020. The other, Taipei Andaz, will have a different designer so the hotels will have distinct identities. There will be 500 rooms, and the developer is optimistic based on surging numbers of tourists, expected to reach 19 million in 2020, and demand from the local wealthy elite.
DEVELOPER EYES AMAZON-SIZED PROJECT FOR ATLANTA
Los Angeles-based developer CIM Group is proposing a US$5-billion project in downtown Atlanta that would meet the office-space criteria for online retailer Amazon's second headquarters (HQ2), though it's not yet being pitched for that purpose, WABE-FM reports. Christopher Sciarrone, an architect working with the developer, discussed the project with an Atlanta business group on January 25. It is envisioned for an area of parking decks and vacant lots known locally as "The Gulch" and would include 18 buildings. Of these, 14 would be office buildings ranging from 70 to 500 ft. tall and providing 9.3 million sq. ft. of space, which Sciarrone said "would seem to" be in line with what Amazon requires. Also included are a 350-ft., 1,500-room hotel and three residential towers. Atlanta was recently named among 20 finalist metros for HQ2, but Sciarrone said developers hope to move forward regardless of Amazon's involvement.
MAN’S LEG FREED FROM ESCALATOR AT NYC MOVIE THEATER
It took responders approximately 15 min. to free a 74-year-old man’s leg from the steps of an escalator at a movie theater on the Upper West Side of New York City (NYC) on the evening of January 24, ABC Channel 7 reports. Firefighters had to dismantle part of the escalator to free the man, who used a walker. He was hospitalized in serious condition.
CHICAGO’S TALLEST STRICTLY RESIDENTIAL BUILDING TOPS OUT
One Bennett Park, which will be the tallest strictly residential building in Chicago at 836 ft. and 70 stories, topped out on January 18 in the Streeterville neighborhood, Curbed Chicago reports. Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, developed by Related Midwest and built by Lendlease, the luxury condominium and residential building is the tallest to be built in the neighborhood since 2009. It will have 69 condos and 279 apartments, and is scheduled for completion late this year.
