  • Residential Elevator Boom to Accommodate Beijing Elderly
This week’s news podcast is sponsored by Electric Elevator Pads.
Electric Elevator Pads is a patent-approved technological invention that helps protect the overall integrity and aesthetics of interior elevator walls. Fitted with an electric motor, and controlled remotely, the walls can quickly be covered for protection or rolled up to expose the existing cab interior.
These pads can be modified to fit any elevator size and/or design. And, this patent is now for sale!  For more information on purchasing the patent or more information on the product, call: (561) 789-1383 or (561) 236-6805; e-mail [email protected]; or visit electricelevatorpads.com.
RESIDENTIAL ELEVATOR BOOM TO ACCOMMODATE BEIJING ELDERLY
District governments in Beijing are subsidizing the construction of hundreds of new residential elevators as the city looks to accommodate its growing elderly population, The Beijinger reports. Approximately 200 new units are planned in nearly 30 neighborhoods in the Haidian District. These units will join 214 elevators in Beijing's northwestern jurisdiction added in 2017. In the Fengtai District, approximately 100 elevators are planned. Often incorporating glass walls and "noiseless" machinery, the elevators are being added to the outsides of apartment buildings originally designed for only a stairwell. Beijing's elderly population is expected to increase from 23% now to 30% of the total population by 2030.

MARYLAND LAW WOULD REQUIRE WITNESS FOR LIFT INSPECTIONS
Maryland Delegate C.T. Wilson has proposed a law that would require state elevator inspectors to be present during inspections, reversing a measure enacted in 2009 to address an inspection backlog that allows non-witness inspections, WUSA Channel 9 reports. The proposed law’s backers say the current law is a “rubber stamp” process that threatens passenger safety, while opponents fear enacting it would result in another backlog and fewer annual inspections. According to the state, four people were injured, and one died while riding an elevator in Maryland between 2010 and 2017.

31-, 49-STORY RESIDENTIAL TOWERS PART OF AMBITIOUS L.A. PLAN
Los Angeles' building boom looks to extend west of downtown, with plans announced for 1111 Sunset, a US$600-million, 1-million-sq.-ft. development that includes 31- and 49-story residential towers, the Los Angeles Times reports. Planned on 5.5 acres between downtown and Dodger Stadium, the "new neighborhood hub" is from developer Palisades and lead architect Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, both of L.A. Besides the residential towers, 1111 Sunset would have a 17-story hotel designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, shops, restaurants, public space and low-rise residences. The plan is making its way through the approval process and has the support of several local lawmakers.

    SERAPID CHANGES HANDS
After 30 years at the helm, Serapid Group President and CEO Saïd Lounis has sold the company, which supplies lifts and related equipment to diverse industries, to Emeric Labesse and Guillaume Davies, who are serving as CEO and chief operating officer, respectively. Lounis retains a stake in the company. Labesse and Davies are backed by LBO France, one of France's leading private-equity companies. In announcing the acquisition, the pair said their goal is to "continue the development of the company based on the fundamentals that have made it a success: innovation, competence and the excellence of its team."

NEW STANDARDS FOR SAUDI ELEVATORS STARTING IN MARCH
The Saudi Arabian Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) will require that most elevators be registered with and certified by the Civil Defense starting in March, the Saudi Gazette reports. The measure will require certificates to be displayed at the ground-floor entrances of all residential and commercial buildings. During a workshop at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry on January 10, SASO and Civil Defense officials noted that private villas, military buildings, mining and construction sites are excluded from inspections for now, but will be included at a later date. By 2020, all elevators must meet the standards, according to SASO. Civil Defense Capt. Faris Bader said the authority will oversee the work of companies authorized to evaluate elevators.

FRESH RENDERINGS OF HEATHERWICK BUILDINGS IN NYC
New renderings show details of 22- and 10-story buildings that will flank the High Line in New York City’s (NYC) Chelsea neighborhood, New York YIMBY reports. Designed by Thomas Heatherwick with SLCE as the architect of record, the structures will total approximately 571,000 sq. ft. for residences and will have outdoor greenspace on their rooftops. Taking the place of low-rise parking garages, both will have podlike, brick-and-glass profiles and boast proximity to the Hudson River, the High Line and public transit. Completion is roughly anticipated in 2021. Related Cos. is the developer.

ONTARIO DELAYS RELEASE OF TSSA ELEVATOR REPORT
National Post reports that Ontario's government delayed release of a report on elevators commissioned by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), the province's safety oversight agency. Commissioned in April 2017 and delivered in November, sought answers regarding the province's out-of-service elevators. The government initially said it was up to TSSA to release the report, but now says the document is under review. Barbara Hanson, with the Ministry of Government Consumer Services, said, “We look forward to making the report publicly available in the coming weeks.” A proposed bill would set a time limit on putting defective elevators back in service, but the large OEMs — KONE, Otis, Schindler and thyssenkrupp — blasted that proposal in a report of their own, critical of what it characterized as TSSA's stifling red tape.
