THYSSENKRUPP’S MULTI CABIN WINS DESIGN AWARD
The lightweight, futuristic design of thyssenkrupp Elevator's MULTI cabin earned it the German Design Award in the Buildings and Elements category for 2018 from the German Design Council. Boasting shaft views of the revolutionary MULTI technology, the cabin's design concept was developed by the Junior Professorship in Industrial Design Engineering at Technische Universität in Dresden, Germany, with neongrau behind the lighting and interface. The cabin was constructed by Composyst GmbH and is on display in the lobby of the thyssenkrupp test tower in Rottweil, Germany. The use of carbon fiber resulted in a cabin weighing several hundred kg less than one made of steel. Its circular operating panel “captures the cabin's horizontal and circular travel directions within the shaft.” A formal awards ceremony is scheduled for February 9, 2018, in Germany.
TURKISH FIRM’S TULIP-INSPIRED TOWER FOR DOWNTOWN MIAMI
Turkish developer Okan Group plans to build a 73-story, 966-ft.-tall mixed-use tower in downtown Miami called The Sterling, Miami Today reports. Set to contain a 300-room hotel, approximately 360 residences, commercial, retail and office space, The Sterling has been recommended for approval by the Urban Development Review Board. Its design, inspired by the shape of a tulip (Turkey's national flower) with a curved, sloping crown, is by Behar Font & Partners P.A. The location is at 501 North Miami Avenue near Miami Worldcenter, Miami Dade College and transit connections. Highlights of the project include a 68th-floor restaurant, swimming pools on the 24th and 25th floors and condominiums with private terraces.
DETAILS REVEALED ABOUT BROOKLYN RESIDENTIAL TOWER
Further details have been revealed about the third City Point tower at 138 Willoughby in Brooklyn, New York, Brownstoner reports. Extell Development’s Brooklyn Point residential tower has had its height increased by 11 to 68 stories and 745 ft. tall, and it will have a “mind-boggling” number of amenities, including a saltwater pool, rock-climbing wall, screening room, putting green and forest-adventure-themed children’s play area. Kohn Pedersen Fox and Katherine Newman Design International are the architects. Sales are expected to start soon, with completion anticipated by early 2021.
    INTERESTING ADDITION TO MELBOURNE SKYLINE
Probuild has delivered an interesting addition to the Melbourne, Australia, skyline in the form of Marina Tower Melbourne, a mixed-use structure consisting of conjoined 43- and 36-story towers that lean, The Urban Developer reports. DKO Architecture collaborated with engineering firm Webber Design on the property, developed by Hiap Hoe of Singapore and forming an "impressive bookend" to the Docklands precinct. Probuild Victoria Managing Director Luke Strombolis described Marina Tower Melbourne as "a truly iconic project" that is unique in the city, with the structure leaning 280 mm at each level. Approximately 460 apartments and common areas were handed over on October 13.

Thirty-two elevators and 13 escalators were unveiled on October 19 as part of a multimillion-U.S. dollar overhaul of 11 Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) stations from Santolan to Recto in Manila, the Philippines, The Manila Times reports. Fourteen additional escalators are to be bid in November and expected to be operational in 2018, according to LRTA Administrator Reynaldo Berroya, who, according to GMA News Online, observed the sudden stopping of one of the new escalators during the inauguration. DALLAS DEVELOPMENT WOULD INCLUDE CITY’S TALLEST
A 20-acre skyscraper campus being planned in downtown Dallas includes an office building that, at 73 stories, would be the tallest in the city, The Dallas Morning News reports. KDC, the developer behind the US$3-billion Legacy West development in nearby Plano, is partnering with landowner Hoque Global on this latest project, dubbed Dallas Smart District. Between City Hall and Interstate 30, the eight-block development would replace parking lots and old buildings with office, retail and hotel space designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli. Drawings show more than six high-rise buildings, along with green space. The first phase would include up to 1 million sq. ft. of office space, a grocery store and a boutique hotel.

Brookfield's Manhattan West in Midtown West/Hudson Yards is eyeing what New York YIMBY describes as "the last major piece of the puzzle," 2 Manhattan West, filings show. Originally planned as a 70-floor supertall, the site's second office tower is now set to rise 59 floors and 849 ft. Skidmore Owings & Merrill is designing the building, which will join the steadily rising 1 Manhattan West and completed 3 and 5 Manhattan West. A smaller hotel called 4 Manhattan West will round out the development. 2 Manhattan West will sit at the northwest corner of 31st Street and Ninth Avenue.

  • Industry Figure: Iran's Elevator Sector Poised For Growth
Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
SCHIERENBECK TAKES LEADERSHIP ROLE AT ASE
thyssenkrupp Elevator CEO Andreas Schierenbeck has been elected to the board of the Alliance to Save Energy (ASE), a Washington, D.C.-headquartered organization that brings together policymakers to work toward better energy efficiency. In this new role, Schierenbeck will lead the energy debate for the elevator industry, which thyssenkrupp notes is instrumental in reducing energy consumption globally. The company developed a net-zero elevator system that is part of its larger plan to provide products and services that enhance urban mobility and save energy. Schierenbeck noted that elevators account for up to 10% of the energy consumption of buildings, which consume approximately 40% of the total energy produced globally. This, he states, puts elevators "right at the heart of the energy-efficiency debate."

INDUSTRY FIGURE: IRAN'S ELEVATOR SECTOR POISED FOR GROWTH
The annual turnover of Iran's elevator industry stands at around IRR50 trillion (US$1.25 billion), while it has the potential to rise to IRR200 trillion (US$5 billion), Mohammad Reza Zohrevandi, president of the Iranian Syndicate for Elevator and Escalator Industries, said. In an October 15 report from the Financial Tribune, Zohrevandi was quoted as saying an average of 45,000 elevators and 1,500 escalators have been installed per year in Iran, over the past few years. “From the engineering and technical viewpoint, Iran’s elevator industry is the best in the Middle East, but Turkey is the top manufacturer and exporter of elevators in the region,” he told the source.

    MALAYSIAN STATE LAUNCHES SAFETY PROGRAM
The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) in Malaysia’s Perak state held an event on October 15 to mark the launch of an elevator-escalator safety awareness program, The Sun Daily reported. During the event, DOSH Director Mohd Hatta Zakaria noted that his department has checked 240 escalators and 993 elevators since the beginning of 2017, and that no injuries or accidents had been reported because of maintenance or safety issues. The safety campaign was launched by Assemblyman Aznel Ibrahim, who urged parents who bring their children to shopping centers to watch them carefully. Mohd Hatta, speaking during the event at Angsana Mall, said such events would be held twice a year. In all, there are 408 escalators and 1,383 elevators in use in Perak.

PROPOSED ELEVATOR LAW PROMPTS NEEA REPORT IN ONTARIO
A controversial proposed law in Ontario, Canada, the Reliable Elevators Act, prompted the National Elevator and Escalator Association (NEEA) to release a report recommending strategies to increase elevator reliability and availability. NEEA argues the act, which would amend the Consumer Protection Act of 2002 to require elevator contractors to complete repairs in a narrow timeframe regardless of contractual agreement, could jeopardize the safety of mechanics and the riding public, raise maintenance fees and decrease competition in the market. The report recommends creating a standard that aligns vertical-transportation systems with a building's anticipated occupancy, eliminates outdated equipment and examines the role of power failures and brownouts in outages and entrapments.
