NEW TUBE STATION: ESCALATORS, INCLINED LIFTS AND GHOSTS
The ticket hall at Liverpool Street Station, Crossrail’s new Tube station in London, will have six escalators, an inclined lift and, potentially, ghosts, IanVisits reports. The blogger explains there will be three escalators from a large, street-level glass box down to the ticket hall and another three escalators and an inclined lift from the hall down to the Elizabeth Line, a 60-mi. stretch between Reading and Heathrow. More than 3,000 bodies from the old Bethlem Royal Hospital (commonly known as Bedlam Asylum), as well as old sewer and telecommunications lines, were excavated to make way for the ticket hall, and some say ghosts still haunt the area. The station comes online in 2018.

EFESME: NEW STANDARDS CHALLENGING FOR SMEs
On September 1, EN 81-20 and -50 became the only codes that give presumption of conformity to the Essential Health and Safety Requirements of the Lifts Directive for the design and manufacture of lifts in Europe. The first standard, EN 81-20, defines revised and updated safety requirements for the construction and installation of lifts. According to the European Federation for Elevator Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (EFESME), small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the lift industry are facing a double challenge. First, they must study and evaluate the changes introduced by the new standards so they can apply them, and second, they need the cooperation of their suppliers for the development of components for lifts and devices that meet the new requirements.

Developer Dyldam expects residents to start moving in by 2022.

THYSSENKRUPP’S ROLE IN ICONIC NEW CHINESE BRIDGE
By November, thyssenkrupp plans to have completed installation of 76 escalators and 26 moving walks at the iconic new Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge in China, the world's largest ongoing sea-based construction project that links the Pearl River Delta's three major cities. At 55 km, the bridge will be one of the world's longest, reducing travel times between Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau. The 102 units are going in at the 500,000-m2 Port of Zhuhai built on an artificial island. Operating in a rough environment, the heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant units are built to withstand moisture, salt and high temperatures. Three regional governments began work on the bridge in 2009, and thyssenkrupp began installation in June 2017.

    DUBAI INTENSIFIES ESCALATOR SAFETY EFFORTS
The Gulf Today reported the Dubai government has called on owners of buildings, shopping centers and markets to secure their escalators by installing "protection" as part of efforts to reduce accidents resulting from children attempting to hang or climb over them and getting their clothes stuck. The Khaleej Times described the protection as "a cover to protect the upper conveyor belt, and provide the required protection near the beginning part of the conveyor belt.” It was added that escalators, moving walks and conveyor belts must have a certificate of examination and be in compliance with the safety requirements from a company recognized by the Accreditation and Compliance Centre, subject to a periodic renewal. The additional protection is based on Dubai Public Health and Community Safety Local Order No. 11 of 2003.

Regulatory changes are improving accountability and compliance. KONE, Schindler, Johnson Lifts, Otis and Mitsubishi Electric are together investing billions of U.S. dollars into expansion of their facilities to meet demand that is expected to grow from approximately 50,000 to 55,000 units annually to more than 70,000 by 2021. As the industry grows, challenges remain, those interviewed said. These include lack of a uniform safety law across India and lack of skilled labor.

Nonprofit Northlight Theatre hopes to be the street-level tenant in a proposed 37-story tower designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in the 1700 block of Sherman Avenue in downtown Evanston, Illinois, the Chicago Tribune reports. The plan, which would include a hotel, restaurant, apartments and parking, was unveiled by a team led by Farpoint Development in September. A dilapidated 1926 movie theater on the site would be razed. Farpoint says the building would solidify Evanston's downtown arts district. Northshore would relocate from shared space in the North Shore Center for Performing Arts in Skokie and draw people from throughout the Chicagoland area. The targeted completion is fall 2020.
