PROPOSED HIGH RISE WOULD BE DENMARK'S TALLEST
Fashion company Bestseller is planning a mixed-use headquarters tower in its hometown of Brande that, if built, would be the tallest building in Denmark, Archinect reports. Designed by Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter, the building would stand more than 200 m tall and accommodate retail shops, offices, educational facilities, space for public events and a hotel. Archinect noted that the Bestseller building would "stick out in the small railway town of Brande," adding that recent figures put the population at a little over 7,000. A starting date for the project was set for 2019, at the earliest.
CHILD HURT AFTER DRIVING TOY CAR ONTO ESCALATOR
A young child riding in a toy car was injured August 23 when he accidentally rolled the car onto an escalator at a store in Kachiguda, Hyderabad, India, The Hindu reported. Authorities said the three-year-old was sitting in the toy car at the store as his parents were shopping nearby. The boy started pedaling the car, driving it onto the escalator. He was thrown off the toy and hit his head. He was taken to a hospital, where he was being treated for bleeding and a fracture just above his nose. Police said the injury was not life threatening. There was no official complaint lodged with authorities, The Hindu said.
45 PARK PLACE FINALLY SEEING PROGRESS
After three years, a new condominium tower is finally getting the go-ahead to join Downtown Manhattan, New York's tallest residential building, New York YIMBY reports. Soho Properties made its initial applications for 45 Park Place — a 43-story, 665-ft. tower — in May 2014, but only this summer were the planning and financing in place to proceed. Foundation work is making headway, and the source surmised that the building will begin rising in a few months. The slender tower will include 50 units that average 2,300 sq. ft. About 1,000 sq. ft. of retail space will be housed on the ground floor. When complete, 45 Park Place will sit one block west of 30 Park Place, which, at 82 stories and 926 ft., is the tallest residential building downtown.

  • Taiwan Blackout Prompts Push for Elevator Code Changes
TAIWAN BLACKOUT PROMPTS PUSH FOR ELEVATOR CODE CHANGES
Architects and engineers say residential buildings with elevators should be required by code to have backup power, following a blackout caused by a power-plant generator failure earlier this month that affected millions across Taiwan and trapped people in elevators, Taipei Times reports. As per building code, many modern elevators have systems powered by generators that allow units to descend to the nearest floor and open doors during power outages and earthquakes, but it’s not a requirement for residential elevators. If codes are changed, developers could use elevators with backup power as a selling point, a local construction manager says.
CODE ANALYSIS REVEALS COST SAVINGS RELATED TO ELEVATORS
Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International analyzed the latest revisions to the International Code Council’s 2015 I-Codes and found cost savings for building owners, including those related to elevators and emergency operation, Buildings reported. While the 2012 I-Codes required most existing elevators intended for use by firefighters and other rescue personnel to have emergency-operation controls, the latest revision exempts some elevator cabs in buildings with fire-suppression systems. Buildings with automatic fire-suppression systems that meet National Fire Protection Association standards and do not have floors 55 ft. above or 25. ft. below the lowest level a fire-department vehicle can reach can forego installing controls, potentially saving more than US$6,200 per cab.
72-STORY CONDOMINIUM TOWER NEARS COMPLETION IN NYC
Within the next several months, One Manhattan Square at 252 South Street in New York City’s (NYC) Lower East Side is expected to top out, eventually bringing 815 condominiums to the market and becoming one of the largest condo projects in NYC, New York YIMBY reports. Extell is the developer and Adamson Associates is the architect of the project, which will stand 850 ft. above street level and include a 13-story residential building next door. Completion is expected in 2019.

Apex was found to have a rigorous approach to occupational health, with zero major injuries or fatalities. Apex Health, Safety, Quality and Environment Manager Jim Johnson stated that health and safety is the “backbone of our company and integrated into everything we do.”
POTENTIAL TALLEST IN BENELUX GETS THE GREEN LIGHT
The Zalmhaven, a 215-m-tall tower with 475 apartments, commercial and retail space planned in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, has gotten the green light from the Dutch high court, which says the local city council correctly applied zoning laws when it previously approved the plan, Dutch News reports. Some residents had opposed the proposal, fearing increased traffic and wind. Developers AM and Amvest hope to open The Zalmhaven, designed by DAM & Partners, in 2020. If built, it will be the tallest structure in the Benelux Union.
ERRC 50/50 RAFFLE TO BENEFIT EESF
The Elevator Riders Riding Club (ERRC), a group of motorcycle enthusiasts and vertical-transportation (VT) professionals who support VT safety, are planning their 50/50 raffle fundraiser for the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation (EESF) at the National Association of Elevator Contractors 68th Annual Convention and Exposition in Orlando on September 13 and 14. NYC’S NEW MOYNIHAN TRAIN HALL DESIGNED TO DAZZLE
Ground was broken on August 17 for Moynihan Train Hall, a US$1.6-billion facility across Eighth Avenue from New York City’s (NYC) Penn Station that promises to be everything the underground station is not: spacious, bright, visually appealing and easy to navigate, various news outlets, including Railway Age, report. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the new station, which includes a 255,000-sq.-ft. concourse and 700,000 sq. ft. of commercial, retail and dining space, will stand the test of time, handle increased passenger volume and become a destination in itself. Natural light from a skylight containing an acre of glass will filter through 11 escalators bringing Amtrak and Long Island Rail Road passengers directly down to the platforms. Completion is anticipated in 2020.

WOMAN DIES IN HOSPITAL ELEVATOR MALFUNCTION IN SPAIN
A 26-year-old woman died in an elevator malfunction in Seville, Spain, just after giving birth to her third child, various news outlets, including the New York Post, report. After the first elevator she and a hospital warden were in failed to move, the warden moved her to another elevator, which began to move when she was midway through the doors, resulting in fatal injuries. Calling the incident “quick, unusual and tragic,” a hospital representative said the elevator was compliant with regulations. A mechanical failure of the elevator’s door was suspected to have caused the malfunction.

Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
LACK OF ELEVATOR TECHS CREATES PROBLEMS IN SAN FRANCISCO
San Francisco’s construction boom has resulted in so much work for elevator technicians that there are not enough to handle an estimated US$71 million in elevator and escalator repairs needed by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (Muni), the San Francisco Examiner reports. Muni approved the funds in August as part of a multibillion-dollar, 20-year capital-improvement plan. Muni operates 52 units, including 44 in stations. Repair and expansion of vertical-transportation systems at various stations, including Powell, Van Ness and Forest Hill, are needed as units are frequently out of service. As of August, at least one elevator was out of service for 50 out of the last 61 days, according to Muni data.
