806 ESCALATORS FOUND UNSAFE IN MALAYSIA
Malaysia's Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) found that out of 7,632 escalators inspected in shopping malls and public places, 806 were unsafe, FMT News reports. Owners were advised by DOSH to repair or replace the units under the "Safe Escalator Campaign." According to the Factories and Machinery Act of 1967, all escalators must have their designs approved by DOSH prior to installation, be tested before being issued a machinery qualification certificate and undergo regular maintenance by a firm or individual approved by DOSH. After 15 months, an escalator is again tested by DOSH. The move came in the wake of a mishap at a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur on October 25 in which an escalator’s metal plates became detached, scaring shoppers and shopkeepers but resulting in no injuries.

PRICE OF ESCALATORS OVER LAS VEGAS AVENUE DISPLEASES
Sixteen new escalators to pedestrian bridges over Tropicana Avenue in Las Vegas will cost an additional US$419,573, and the Nevada Transportation Board is unhappy with the rising costs associated with the overall US$30-million project that has been in the works since 2003, the Las Vegas Sun reports. The Las Vegas Convention Center is funding US$19 million of the project, with the state Department of Transportation funding the rest. The general contractor initially gave a lower price estimate before realizing the lower-cost new escalators were not compatible with the project. The new units are being ordered from Otis.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) named Shanghai Tower in Shanghai, China, the best tall building worldwide during the 15th Annual CTBUH Awards Ceremony and Dinner on November 3 at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. The announcement followed a yearlong selection process involving 132 entries from 27 countries. Describing Shanghai Tower as “the pinnacle of progressive skyscraper design,” CTBUH said innovative features such as its double-skin façade and multistory atria, made it stand out from the three other regional Best Tall Building winners: VIA 57 West in New York City, Americas; The White Walls, Nicosia, Cyprus, Europe; and The Cube, Beirut, Lebanon, Middle East & Africa.
