TWEAKED “CUCUMBER” GETS THE GREEN LIGHT IN WEST LONDON
After being in the works for at least seven years, a 46-story residential tower nicknamed the Paddington Cucumber won approval in April from city planners in west London, Building reports. Designed by Apt and officially known as 1 Merchant Square, the tower will be the tallest in developer European Land's six-building Merchant Square project north of Paddington Basin. The original plan was tweaked to omit a seven-floor hotel element in lieu of more homes and to increase the height of an adjacent building from 15 to 21 stories. The new plan, which still requires approval from London Mayor Sadiq Khan, will bring 426 new homes to the market.

REPORT: 80 NEW SKYSCRAPERS PLANNED IN TORONTO
Demand for housing and limited space have positioned Toronto for a spike in skyscraper construction, with 80 projects on the drawing boards, the National Post reports. Real estate company Point2 Homes produced a report that revealed the plans, which promise to double the number of tall buildings in the city. Of the 80 skyscrapers — defined as structures at least 150 m tall — 31 have set a completion date. Supertalls are also poised to populate the skyline, with projects such as the 85-story The One at 1 Bloor West — Canada’s future tallest — under construction and scheduled for completion in 2023. Should all the towers with set timelines be completed, Toronto will jump to 10th on the "cities with the most skyscrapers" list, replacing Jakarta, Indonesia.

HANGING GARDENS THE CENTRAL FEATURE OF SINGAPORE TOWER
Heatherwick Studios drew inspiration for the approximately 31-story-tall EDEN residential tower in Singapore's Orchard Road neighborhood from first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's vision of a "city in a garden," the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat reports, citing Architects' Journal. Each of EDEN's 20 luxury residences will have its own generous garden balcony, "recreating the verdant backyard access once ubiquitous across homes here," Thomas Heatherwick said. The façade is being constructed of concrete walls displaying an abstract map of Singapore's terrain. Developed by Swire Properties, EDEN is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
