  • September 2018 - Pharyngitis Part 1
    Happy September Everyone!

This month we are going back to simpler times and simpler complaints. Something I guarantee you  will be seen on every single shift for the rest of your life. The dreaded . . . SORE THROAT!!! And as boring as that topic may seem, it’s common and it’s fraught with pitfalls, perils and unsatisfied customers. For this month, to ease you into it, we start with the dangerous etiologies as we coast into the mundane in October.

All hot potato voices and stridor are impersonated . . . badly,

  • August 2018 - Maintenance of Certification UPDATE
    Happy August Everyone!

We are taking a break (man, we take a lot of breaks!) from the pure medicine we love to scrutinize and turn this month to process that keeps us ticking as board certified EM docs. Several years ago, shortly after graduating from residency and passing my boards, I spoke with Dr. Sam Keim about how to keep up this newly acquired certification because I had NO IDEA what I was doing. This month we asked him to come back talk about updates that will directly affect you (no, not you, just the docs this time, sorry to scare you) and hopefully make it easier and more worth your while.

So put down your #2 pencil and let’s talks Maintenance of Certification,

  • July 2018 - Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
    Happy July Everyone!
Welcome new 'terns and new listeners to our podcast. Immediate apologies for what you're about to read and listen to.
This month we're on the hunt for the illusive and deadly subarachnoid hemorrhage. It's fearsome headache is enough to fell a full grown man in a matter of seconds! Many diseases try to mimic the beast but few can match the sheer killing force of this suprisingly tiny aneurysmal bleed. We'll do our best to catch one but these little guys are crafty. Armed with only a set of decision rules and a CT scanner, I plan to sneak up on it and poke it with this here spinal needle!
    Crikey!

  • June 2018 - Drugs of Abuse (Dr. Carl Youngs)
    Happy June everyone!

It’s vacation time so as good academic doctors, we’re letting the residents do all the work. This month’s episode is an ode to our senior class, and oh what a crazy trip it has been. We have the reins over to Dr. Carl Youngs and his amazing grand rounds on his anthropologic trip to Burning Man and the up-and-coming drugs of abuse. A something old, something new, something something, something methylated and something that’ll make you see the color blue. Thanks to the bearded-wonder and his . . . first hand experience (?) with this emerging topic.

From kids to adults and from border to border, we have everything you need to clinically clear those fender benders and send them on their merry way.
Don't move a muscle (especially your neck) until you've heard this month's episode.

  • April 2018 - Cervical Spine Injury - Part 1
    Happy April everyone!
This month we are getting back to the nitty gritty science of emergency medicine. Something everyone loves to talk about, worry about and argue about: the cervical spine. That’s right, a topic so important that it’s not even part of the ABC’s of trauma management because it is assumed you already took care of it! We will cover everything from assessment to management, imaging to NOT imaging, cervical collars to towel rolls and most everything in between. We have SOO much stuff to cover that we had to break the podcast in two . . . sorry, FRACTURE the podcast in two with our peer review by another great UofA community alumnus.
So give yourself a hug and squeeze your butt cheeks as we log roll you into this month’s episode of AZEMCast on cervical spine injury.
