When it comes to confronting challenges, it's rare that they get any easier with time. One of the biggest challenges for emergency managers is tackling the massive Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) gaps that have festered in emergency management for decades. These failures affect how we plan, respond, and recover from disasters. The lack of DEI in our agencies and organizations also holds back our profession. Brandy, the disaster lawyer, joins us to discuss these challenges and provide some critical insight into how we can start this process and why it's important to finally put your efforts into addressing DEI in emergency management. Hint: It's important because we are humanitarians and if that doesn't motivate you like it should, it's also a massive legal and financial liability and a failure to live up to your duty to protect your community.

I'm going to start 2023 by trying to break apart a paradigm, emergency managers shall not respond to a scene. This rule exists in emergency management for reasons unknown however, we are not tethered to a desk. There, I said it. Stand up, stretch your legs, and walk out the nearest door. Boom, step one is done. Now go do stuff.

I also talk about how small shops can grow and all emergency managers can take advantage of learning how to talk to people and spice up your reports with some graphic design flare.

It's been a couple of weeks since our last episode and it's because of good things. Today I am joined by Eric Kant to discuss the future of emergency management and public safety. We're talking AI, digital twins, virtual reality, blockchain, and all sorts of other technologies. We challenge the status quo and introduce things that emergency managers can introduce today to make their jobs easier and do more with data.
