Have you ever thought about moving into your purpose in life? On this week’s episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel is joined by Johnathan Baldwin. Johnathan “JB” co-founded Story House and is a Certified Life Coach, Pastor of over 15 years, ordained minister, and a Prepare and Enrich facilitator. Takeaways:

    Johnathan’s:

    1. Soak decisions in prayer. Lay the decision at God’s feet. Pray His will over your life.
    2. Check out your spiritual gifts. God gives us gifts and purpose for our lives. Spiritual giftings give God glory.
    3. What are your passions? Use your giftings and passions to transition into a new role or ministry

    Paige’s:

    1. Be authentic
    2. Be practical
    3. Be God honoring

When these three things are present or when I deviate from them, I am able to reign it back in and refocus so I can do good work.

  • Episode 21-Creating Discipleship in the Home with guests Tania and Michael Koehler

On this week’s episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel is joined by Michael and Tania Koehler with Marriage Mania Ministries to talk about discipleship in the home. They are very passionate about helping families and raising the next generation to be sincere Jesus followers. You can start discipleship today by simply having dinner together and starting to build community within your own family.

    Paige’s Takeaways:

    1. We can’t live out what we don’t know. We first have to educate and be a follower of Jesus ourselves. Pursue Jesus in our own personal relationship with him so it reflects in our lives and so our children can see Jesus in and through us.
    2. Value of being in community with your own family. Start with having dinners together. Integrate how Jesus was a part of your own day in conversations with our family. Have intentional connection throughout the day.
    3. Reading the Bible together. Start with the gospels if you don’t know where to start. Start with reading a verse a day.

  • Episode 20-How to Have the Sex Talk with Your Kids with Paige Clingenpeel

Are you a parent that struggles with communicating with your kids about sex? On this week’s episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel gives pointers for having the “sex talk” with our kids.  We’ve been designed for a purpose and on purpose. We were not just born knowing how to live our divine design, we have to be taught those things which is where we as parents come into it. We need to be having healthy conversations with our kids.

    Paige’s Takeaways:

    1. This is beyond just the “mechanics” conversation. We want our children to come to us and ask questions because it builds trust and we can answer questions truthfully. These conversations will equip them.
    2. Be specific and as age appropriate as possible. Listen to their reactions to gauge how they are processing conversations. This is not just a one time talk, it should be a continuous conversation. Talk about temptations. Our bodies are designed to be stimulated but we need to have self-control.
    3. Find answers from the Bible and encourage them to do the same.
    4. Focus on the “what to do’s” instead of the “do not’s”.

  • Episode 19-Embracing and Strengthening Families with Disabilities with guest Julie Hornok

Are you a parent of a special needs child? Do you struggle with finding community and connection? On this week’s episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel has Julie Hornok on the show. Julie is the co-founder of Labeled and Loved which is a non-profit organization that is passionate about empowering women to find grace, acceptance and strength in the midst of even the toughest circumstances life has to offer. Humbled by parenting kids with extra needs, she works to build community for those who feel alone and spread her message of hope to anyone who will listen.

    Paige’s Takeaways:

    1. We can focus on what our kids can do. Flip the script and walk through the positives of their day to day so we also have that mindshift. If we focus on the negatives just think about how discouraging that can be to us as parents but also to our children. We can still grieve the things that they can’t do.
    2. Stop caring about what other parents think. Don’t focus on the opinions of others around you, instead focus on what is best for your own child at that moment.
    3. Find Community. We cannot be doing this alone. IT doesn’t matter if you have special needs kids or able-bodied kids. We can allow other trusted people to speak into our kids' lives. Be intentional about who we are allowing into our lives and our kids lives.

  • Episode 18-The Power of Attachment with our Kids with guest Dr. Suzanne Levy

Have you ever heard of attachment based family therapy? On this week’s episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel invites Dr. Suzanne Levy who is an internationally renowned licensed clinical psychologist, co-developer of the Attachment Based Family Therapy and co-owner of the ABFT International Family Institute. Dr. Levy shares an abundance of information on attachment styles, encourages us in the fact that we all mess up as parents and teaches us how to recover from those mistakes.

    Paige’s Takeaways:

    1. Addressing the needs of our child is showing them that they are worthy of love and protection. If they have that when they are little, they will grow to understand that there are trusted adults out there and we as parents should be one of those trusted adults. That will create a solid foundation of identity development.

    -Help them define emotions.

-Meet them where they are at.

-Identify emotions. Don’t be scared of the emotions, go deep with them.

-Continue to show they are safe and your love is unconditional.

    1. We only have to do it well 40% of the time. Accept ownership when we mess up the other 60% of the time. Apologize for the incorrect response to them. This builds trust and makes them feel safe and valuable.

  • Episode 17-Dad Academy with guest Jeff Hamilton

On this week’s episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel has Jeff Hamilton, the founder of Dad Academy on the show.  Jeff has a passion for helping dads find their purpose, passion, intimacy on a deeper level with God and finding community with other dads who are walking through life together. Jeff shares the three C’s that are an important role of the father which Paige also shares in her takeaways at the end of the show.

    Paige’s Takeaways:

    1. Dads have an important role in the family.

    The Three C’s:

    1. Courage - Dads project trust in their kids. They need a good foundation in order to feel courage.
    2. Competence - We get to teach our kids things we know and are good at. If there is something we aren’t good at, invite other people who are good at those things into our kids' lives.
    3. Confidence - Creating rituals and traditions. Our kids need to be confident in relying on us.
    4. Spouses can support in ways like saying “thank you” for the things they have done. Seeing their value to the family and making it known. Be intentional about making them feel seen and known.

  • Episode 16-The Marriage Gift: 365 Prayers for Our Marriage with guest Aaron Smith

In a world filled with busy schedules, mounting challenges, and increasing disconnection, we have the gift and power of prayer. On this week’s episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel is joined by Aaron Smith who co-authored The Marriage Gift with his beautiful wife, Jennifer Smith. Aaron shares that the most important thing that we can do with our spouse to increase intimacy is to pray with them.

    Paige’s Takeaways:

    1. The power of prayer - Building intimacy in your marriage. Prayer can actually increase our growth and intimacy with our spouse. Prayer can sometimes be uncomfortable not only between our Father and ourselves but also with our spouse.
    2. If you get nervous to pray, just pray honestly. Be honest with your prayers to the Lord. Talk about conflict and pray about it and with your spouse.
    3. Make time for date nights. Be intentional in coming alongside each other and make prayer a part of the time together.
    4. Marriage is a gift. Marriage is not always easy but there are lots of blessings in marriage. The more you work on it, the more you become “one” with your partner, the more beautiful it can be. Prayer is a gift for your marriage.

  • Episode 15-How to Advocate on Behalf of Kids Who have Behavior Challenges with guest Kim Hopkins

On this week’s episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel is joined by Kim Hopkins who is the director of outreach and communications for Lives in the Balance. Lives in the Balance is Dr. Ross Greene’s non-profit organization which teaches parents, caregivers, and teachers how to advocate on behalf of kids who have behavior challenges in hopes of changing the system and making sure everyone is getting what they need.

    Paige’s Takeaways:

Step 1. Gather information. Why are our kids doing what they are doing? It’s usually because they are not equipped to solve the problem at hand. What is causing the tension? If we allow them to express their feelings and concerns, we can work without kids to solve the problem.

Step 2. What is our perspective? Why do we want peace in our home? Share with our kids our expectations and perspectives.

Step 3. Come back together and invite our children to actually tell us to help alleviate the problem, solve the problem, and come to a mutual conclusion of what works best for all involved.

  • Episode 13-The Impact of Dads in the Lives of their Kids with guest Dr. Meg Meeker

In our culture today, the role of the father is really put down but what people don’t realize is  that the role of a father really is important in our kids' lives. On this week's episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel has special guest Dr. Meg Meeker on the show to talk about the impact that fathers have in our kids' lives. Dr. Meeker also addresses how to lift up our husbands and encourage them in their role as the father instead of criticizing.

    Paige’s Takeaways:

    1. We might be causing stress or negative interactions towards our husbands or father of our children because of the way we potentially criticize or judge them. How we ask a father to initiate a conversation can sometimes be critical and can lead to discouragement instead of being helpful.
    2. A fathers voice is so powerful in our kids' lives. It takes one word or one praise from them to make the kids light up.
    3. Be mindful about how we speak over our husbands. We need to encourage and praise them for speaking into our kids' lives and being the best dad that they can be. This will change the dynamic in the household.
    4. Father wounds can be something that you struggle with for life. They have shaped you and helped shape your identity and maybe wounded you at a deep level. I recommend seeing a counselor who can speak into these issues and hurts. We don’t want to be stuck or let things fester for too long. We can find freedom in this area.
