Listen Later

California OES and San Joaquin County emergency services discuss their preparation for winter storms. A CalMatters investigation into how a disabled man was in jail for nine years waiting for trial. Youth and diversity in classical music.

Winter storm updates

The latest powerful winter storm has slammed into California just as Northern California was just beginning to recover from another storm over the New Year’s weekend.  This most recent storm once again brought strong winds power outages and flooding concerns.   In response to the series of atmospheric rivers forecasted, Governor Newsom declared a state of emergency with more storms forecasted in the coming days.  Brian Ferguson is with the California Office of Emergency Services to provide the very latest on the statewide response. Insight also spoke with Tiffany Heyer, Director of Emergency Operations for San Joaquin County to learn more about the storm's impact on the Central Valley.

Waiting for trial

Nine years in custody and never tried for a crime. CalMatters’ Jocelyn Wiener shares her reporting on the story of Lorenzo Mays, a Sacramento County man who was arrested in connection with a fatal shooting in 2010, but due to his intellectual disability and mental issues, spent a large portion of his life waiting for justice in the legal system, but never faced a jury of his peers. Jocelyn untangles a long and painful road for Lorenzo and exposes the legal red tape, bureaucracy and delays that ultimately failed.

Youth and diversity in classical music

As we’ve heard through conversations on CapRadio’s new podcast, A Music of Their Own the world of classical music hasn’t been welcoming to women and people of color.  Some would argue that is still the case. But it is changing thanks to music educators who work to inspire children with classical music. Insight took time to speak with two classical leaders in their fields who are making a difference.  Robert Vann is the General Manager of the Sacramento Youth Symphony. And Maestro Christian Baldini, is the Music Director of the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra and Camellia Symphony Orchestra.
