Today on Perry and Shawna Mornings, wave after wave of grace! Maybe you’ve heard this about the bible: The Old Testament is about an angry God who hands out rules and drives you to live up to them. The New Testament is about a loving God who forgives and loves us and is hardly ever angry except when it comes to those rule keeping people who think they’re better than everybody. We’re going to shatter that idea with some help from Matt Chandler, teaching pastor at the Village Church, Dallas. What we find is that the Old Testament Law is a grace that leads us to Jesus, who empowers us to love God and love people. Then Paul had a thorn in the flesh to keep him humble—“To keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness’” (2 Cor. 12:8-9). Paul had a thorn, and Shawna has a thorn. She shares what God is teaching her through it. Then we have a sweet conversation about this amazing truth: Eph. 2:8-9: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”Next God’s grace not only forgives you and me. But it powers us to change. To live a new life. But we don’t change by willing it to happen. By working harder. We change by coming back to what brought us into friendship with God in the first place! We find out what that is with another assist from Matt Chandler. And finally we have another sweet convo about Eph. 2:8-10 from a completely different camera angle: Perry shares a story about a friend who doesn’t feel he’s one of the elect (not true by the way).
