  • Why It's Important To Have Therapy Dogs- Lena Strickling

    Send us a text

My very special guest today is gonna educate you on why dogs are so incredible at giving love to first responders and Lena Strickland and her dog birdie. Which you're gonna see if you're watching this on YouTube, a beautiful dog and Lena is so sweet and kind, they make such a great team and they're going out and doing good and spreading love and just giving those first responders some positive emotion, some happiness when they really need it.

    ABOUT THE GUEST

    Lena Strickling

Lena is the Associate Director for First Responder Therapy Dogs (FRTD). For over 8 years, Lena has worked for nonprofits. She loves working for a greater purpose in causes that she believes in. This is a major factor in what led her to FRTD. When Lena was nine years old, she was diagnosed with a chronic health condition. Frequent hospital visits introduced her to the work of therapy dogs. These special dogs were a bright spot during her treatment and inspired her to one day become a handler. As her health worsened, Lena began dealing with serious mental health issues. After years of seeking treatment options, she finally started to feel like she was in a better place. Lena became passionate about mental health and learning how the brain works. She began taking classes, listening to podcasts, attending webinars, and finding ways to help and inspire other people struggling with both mental and physical health. Her love for therapy dogs coupled with her passion for mental health and close ties with first responders made joining First Responder Therapy Dogs an easy decision. You can find Lena and her dog, Birdie, working as a First Responder Therapy Dog team nearly every day of the week!

  • What Should We Do Different As Leaders And Organizations- Jerry Dean Lund

    Send us a text

My personal views on leadership and what we could be doing differently. I feel that those we lead are the biggest asset in any organization. We need to listen to them without judgment and jump straight to giving them the advice to fix a problem. Please get to know them and celebrate their accomplishments on and off the job. Develop a culture that does this by putting some of these ideas into place to accomplish it. Failure to do so will rought the organization from the top down and not the bottom up.

I also think most organizations fail to teach leaders the correct way to be a coach and mentors. They assume by your years in a career field give you the skills and knowledge to be a complete leader.

  • How To Build Financial Strength For First Responders- Nick Daugherty

    Send us a text

My very special guest today is known as the financial cop, Nick Daugherty. He has got some great information that pertains to financial wealth and wellness that ties into your mental health. He's gonna teach you how to set up a basic budget and how to pay off those bills and get outta debt. So you have that financial freedom now, and when you retire, this is a great episode. It ties into that mental health aspect because there's so much pressure with our finances. And as first responders working on this overtime, he's got some thoughts and theories on that.

    ABOUT THE GUEST

    Nick Daugherty
    President / Owner

Nick Daugherty began his career with the Grand Prairie Police Department (GPPD) in 2003 serving as a patrol officer, school Resource Officer, and underage alcohol and drug task force officer.  In 2012 he promoted to the rank of Sergeant where he served as a patrol Sergeant, field training supervisor, fleet coordinator, and the criminal intelligence unit sergeant. He semi-retired in August of 2017 and continues to serve as a reserve officer for GPPD.

At a young age, Nick did a lot of irresponsible things with money, consistently partaking in “stupid tax” (the art of buying toys he couldn’t afford using credit cards).  Before he knew it, he had accumulated over $80,000 in consumer debt, most of which was wrapped up in cars, car stereo equipment, and just “plain ole stuff.”  He was tired . . . tired of being in debt and tired from being stuck in the overtime cycle just to keep afloat!  Nick realized that he needed to educate himself on personal finances and work to get out of the hole he had dug for himself.  He was introduced to the Dave Ramsey program and became an avid listener, supporter, and believer in the Total Money Make Over program.  He sold a bunch of that “plain ole stuff” and worked over a thousand hours of overtime to get out of debt – which he achieved in 2007 and has been consumer debt free ever since!

A graduate and coordinator of Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, Nick is also a certified Ramsey Solution Master Financial Coach* and has coached hundreds of first responder families through almost every type of financial crisis and scenario possible. He also works with several national first responder nonprofit organizations, focusing on financial wellness for those suffering from PTSD and suicidal thoughts.

In 2011, Nick was approached by Grand Prairie Police Chief Steve Dye to create and instruct a revolutionary an
