  • Operation K9 Hero- DuWayne Schwartz

    Send us a text

Enduring the Badge is a podcast series that explores the personal side of first responders. In this episode, me and  DuWayne Schwartz from Operation K9 Hero talked about his and Tio's (his K9 therapy dog) mission on how they shed light on PTSD and mental health issues of first responders. This is a great episode for anyone interested in learning about how dogs can be used to help others cope with mental health issues.

The power of dogs in healing has been around for centuries. Dogs like Tio (who you can see on picture here) and DuWayne Schwartz' K9 hero dog handler are there for you whether for therapy or just companionship; They will provide much more than protection but also bring great joy into someone’s life by simply being there.

    ABOUT THE GUEST

    DuWayne Schwartz

I am with the Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin Local 275, Neenah, WI. I have been there going on 21 years. My rank is a Fire Inspector.

The well-being of our military personnel and veterans, as well as our professionals in public safety has been a passion of mine. With PTSD and suicides on the rise over the last couple of years, I wanted to come up with a way I could give back and volunteer my time. Something different and laid back. Something less formal.

So I did a lot of research on service dogs and how a Facility Dog could benefit these individuals. I did a lot of networking and collaborating with professionals in this area and different organizations. Through that I made some connections and decided the best route would be for me to start a nonprofit organization.

So that’s when a started the process to come up with “Operation K-9 Hero”, a volunteer based nonprofit organization dedicated to our military, veterans, police, fire and paramedics who might need a little extra support through a K9 Therapy Dog. Starting a nonprofit organization and to become a 501.c.3 charity is not an easy task and is time consuming.

I figured a Facility Dog being utilized as a Therapy Dog would be a great conversation started and an ice-breaker to help be there for someone in need.

So I came across “Tio” who was in service dog training as a puppy. Tio and I started training together and he seemed to be the perfect match for me and Operation K-9 Hero and our mission. From there we became a certified Therapy Dog team, and he is now my partner.

This is our journey….helping others through a K9-human partnersh

  • How To Cope With A Tragic Loss- April Katherman- Redgrave

    Send us a text

April Katherman-Redgrave is an author, speaker, blogger, and founder of Beauty for Our Ashes Ministry. As the surviving widow of fallen San Jose Police Motors Officer Michael J. Katherman, April experienced unimaginable brokenness and despair but also witnessed how God redeemed a terrible situation into one of great beauty and joy. Once a school teacher and aspiring educational administrator, April now writes and speaks to encourage law enforcement, the grieving, the divorced, blended families, and finding love after loss.

    Book Brief
April Katherman-Redgrave is the surviving widow of fallen San Jose Police Motors Officer Michael J. Katherman, who was struck by another vehicle in 2016. Six months later, their dream home was flooded during the 2017 winter storms in Hollister, California-not once but five times-destroying their house and forcing April and her two sons to rely on the kindness of friends, community, and family to pick up the pieces. Through Hell and High Water chronicles unimaginable tragedy, loss, heartbreak, and loneliness, yet also how God faithfully brought her family through the other side of a tunnel where once there was no light to be seen. Told with rawness, transparency, and humor too, this is a story of redemption, courage, strength, forgiveness, and blessing, as God began to make all things new in ways she could never have imagined.

Though we may never understand why God allowed these tragedies to happen to the Kathermans, Through Hell and High Water shows He has been and will always be in control, even down to the smallest detail. God's love and purpose is still shining brightly in April, as she shares her beauty-from-ashes, redemptive story to encourage others, honor her husband in heaven, and glorify all God has done in her life.

This book speaks to the heart of the grieving, law enforcement families, divorced or blended families, or anyone who has experienced loss and is struggling to find hope in a broken life. May you find encouragement, strength, and purpose through April's story, God's story.

  • Do More - Firefighter Corey Sierra

    Send us a text

Originally from SoCal, Corey Sierra grew up in Las Vegas where he lives with his wife and two daughters. He served 6-years on active duty with the United States Navy. He chose to pursue firefighting as a post-military career. After obtaining his NREMT certification, he worked with the BLM on a Type-2 crew. As a national resource, the Southern Nevada interagency hand crew fought fire on large-scale incidents in the Southwest region. During the off-season, he worked part-time with the ambulance in Vegas and went to college to obtain his IFSAC firefighting certifications.
In 2012 he left the BLM to accept the job at MCLB Barstow Fire & Emergency Services
and has been there ever since. He has advanced certifications as a Hazmat & Rescue Technician, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, & Fire Officer I & II. He is also a Driver/Operator for the Department. He has a passion for training and enjoys mentoring probationary firefighters.
In 2018, he started First Tuesday Training (FTT). A multi-agency training initiative aimed
toward improving mutual aid emergency operations & relationships in the North Hi-Desert of SoCal. The initiative has partners from the surrounding area participating in the FTT program.
Partners include, paid and volunteer Fire Departments, private ambulance, air transportation
service, sheriff, and local businesses. Agencies meet on the First Tuesday of every month to
work on an area of training relative to the calls ran together. Each agency alternates as a lead
instructor so relative knowledge can be dispersed.
Propelled by a strong desire to do more, FF Sierra founded the Silver Valley Fire Alliance (SVFA) to assist the volunteer fire departments in the region obtain training, equipment, and recruitment. Still, in its first year of operating existence, SVFA has become a pillar of improvement for the Daggett, Yermo, and Newberry Springs Volunteer Fire Departments. With donations from local businesses and generous individuals, SVFA has been able to provide new hand tools, gloves, various hose fittings, uniforms, badges, helmet shields, assorted PPE, boots, bottled water, bedding, and tuition/book reimbursements for the hardworking and well-deserving
    departments.
The Silver Valley Fire Alliance is very grateful and proud of the impact it has had in the
North Hi-Desert thus far. There is still much work to be done, we can “Do More”
