• Song “Truth” from Local Honey’s Late Bloomer:
https://music.apple.com/us/album/truth/1221021288?i=1221021289
In this episode:
Whether you’re thinking on it fondly or happy to give it the boot, there always seems to be an excitement around the coming of the new year.
So many resolutions are made that, come the end of January, have already been abandoned. So, here’s an alternative. NO RESOLUTIONS! Just enjoy the season, use it to reflect on what you’ve enjoyed in your life over the past year, or years, and would like more of. I want to touch on the thing, above all others, that will amplify & enlighten every area your life, giving you the knowledge of your abundance, whether you actually feel it or not – because sometimes we get in a funk. But, this knowledge will pull you out of the funk more quickly than anything else ever can.
That’s the recognition and the acceptance of Energy that is far more powerful than any of us is on our own. Making it a daily practice to engage will eventually feel like breathing – simple and completely necessary for life. And, the result will be a feeling of gratitude, no matter what circumstances may come your way.

→SONG: “Truth” from Local Honey, Late Bloomer – Get it on Apple Music
Learning how to tap into Divine Energy as a sense of knowing you are here as a force to be reckoned with, how to ground yourself in Earth energy, so you feel stable and confident, and how to use your voice as a powerful conduit for good is life-changing.
I’ve talked with many guys who have shared with me privately, their fear around speaking out publicly. These are smart, successful, effective men in their jobs. Some of them sales guys who feel fine talking one-on-one, but when having to make a presentation, they’re overcome with fear, self-doubt, inability to know what to say or how to say it. One guy said he turns beet red, his face flushes with heat, and he’s overwhelmed with embarrassment when making presentations to his company.
If that sounds like you, you’re not alone. Believe me. Fear of public speaking ranks among the greatest fears people ever face. And I’m not necessarily talking about presentations before groups – it could just be speaking up in the presence of several other peers, or speaking your truth in your intimate relationships, even.
It can also be one of the greatest skills you can ever develop and will serve you well throughout your life and career. I’m not necessarily talking about becoming a public speaker – just a person who is capable of expressing yourself in any situation; being who you are, comfortable in your own skin.
This all relates to understanding unseen energies, lower-level vibrations that affect you and pull your thoughts down to a place where you are not as effective as you can be (even into depression) to the higher vibration of Divine Energy that is your fuel for being everything you can be.

In this episode:
I want to broaden the idea of “the spirit of the season” for you just a bit. Think about the phrase “spirit of the game” in sports or hearing someone say, “that’s the spirit” or “I can’t make the party, but I’ll be there in spirit”.
“Spirit” refers to the heart or the essence of something – the “core of existence” of that person, idea, concept or entity. So, what does it mean if you’re “not” in the spirit? If you’re not tapping into the truth or the reality of the thing?
Let’s face it, sometimes we’re not in the spirit of things – for whatever reason. Could be grief, detachment, stress – or a number of things. It can be that we float in and out of it. It happened to me tonight on my way to a rehearsal. In this episode, I share that story with you because I think it can be helpful to you when you experience this “falling out of the spirit” and into a mindset that doesn’t serve you well. Listen to learn how I quickly got back into the spirit of the season. You can use the same tool to get a quick shift!

You can use the tools employed by show producers to create and organize your projects in sections, no matter what you’re working on. Kelly talks about some of the ways she builds a multi-faceted production, encompassing many layers, from rehearsals to marketing to sponsorships and more, while working with lots of other creative entrepreneurs. Listen up – you’ll get a lot of juicy ideas you can use for improving your own leadership skills.
You’ll also hear more great music, including Kelly impromptu a cappella, and a poignant story connected to the arrangement of her beautiful version of “Jingle” that will touch your heart.

Every year, for 13 years, I’ve had the privilege to be a part of an amazing eclectic holiday show produced by my sister, Kelly Brown. And, I thought I’d make December a month of sharing some behind-the-scenes from the show, because it touches on a lot of things – the business of creating a successful, long-running show and what it takes to do that as an entrepreneur. The leadership skills involved in wrangling a bunch of musicians, though they’re all top-notch professionals, is a feat, as we’re talking about pulling together a bunch of individual entrepreneurial souls to collaborate in a concentrated amount of time in order to make magic happen.
This is Part 1 of a 2-part conversation with Kelly.
Show Notes:
**Links to songs will be updated later today.
3:15 – Sisters!
3:40 – Introduction of Kelly Brown, Artist & Producer of The Local Honey Holiday Mix.
Kelly talks about what has been the driving force for her to continue producing such a time and labor intensive show for thirteen years. She considers it a gift to work and play with such talented, well-known artists.
6:30 – The inception of the show in 2006 and the way it has evolved into a tradition for many fans who have made the show a part of their holiday tradition year after year.
7:29 – Prior to the live show, we got so tired of hearing the same tired versions of Christmas songs, we finally recorded our first holiday CD.
8:24 – Frankly Scarlet’s recording of “Coventry Carol” was included on a compilation of holiday songs from Deep Ellum bands.
8:39 – Kelly purchased Pro Tools and learned it while recording the CD. Musicians loved being a part of it because the songs were joyful. Then, great producers like David Castell could come in and mix it. It’s been one of our most loved music offerings.
11:12 – Kelly talks about the process of making the decisions necessary to launch a large production and holiday music event. The first year, she collapsed from fatigue and learned a major lesson about pacing!
13:04 – SONG: “If We Make It Through December” – Local Honey from Jingle CD/music compilation – Get it on Apple Music
16:45 – Kelly talks about the choice to record “If We Make It Through December”. She tells a fun story about starting the process with Kenny Withrow (New Bohemians), going through a snow storm, adding Hunter Hendrickson to the mix, then cutting her favorite lick with her Telecaster. Reggie Rueffer’s fiddle tops it off.
19:30 – Kelly’s Wire-Fox Terrier, Winston, joins in the conversation.
20:04 – Having fun with great players capable of pulling off the Western swing the song calls for. Playing live with Chad Rueffer and Reggie Rueffer.
21:18 – Our first holiday CD, Rejoice, includes my favorite holiday song to perform – “Holiday Cheer”.
Kelly talks about how the song was born out of her work as a session singer, writing and recording for her client, The National Cheerleader Association, and their performance at the Hula Bowl.
23:30 – A Carpenter’s song started as a jingle and became a huge hit. Lots of silly mayhem ensues in this segment.
26:14 – SONG: “Holiday Cheer” (Live) – from the Jingle CD/music compilation – Get it on Apple Music
31:04 – The choice to record a song that I don’t like. Kelly doesn’t like it either! So…why? Kelly decided to straighten out the beat to see what would happen and the result is a cooler, sexier version of this classic that has remained a period piece recorded in the same way by a lot of artists…until now.
33:15 – SONG: “Santa Baby” – from the Jingle CD/music compilation – Get it on Apple Music
Kelly Brown, as a singer, has a wonderful ability to emote and bring the deep feeling from a song.
Stay tuned for Part 2 of this conversation with Kelly Brown, aka Local Honey, where we’ll dive deeper into entrepreneurship, leadership skills, and more on the talented musicians involved in the show.

SHOW TRANSCRIPT:
Hey, it’s Kimberly Cain & this is a Tune Your Vibes episode today.
I’ve got a special treat for you later in the show, so be sure to stick around to the end.
It’s Thanksgiving week in the U.S. & I’m so thankful for you, my listeners. And, even if you’re not celebrating Thanksgiving … (I have a lot of listeners in other parts of the world) – this episode is for you, too. I want to particularly shout out to my listeners in Australia, France, the UK, Japan, & Belgium. I’m thankful for all of you…wherever you are as you’re listening to this.
I may be catching you already in a thankful mode today…& that’s great. Or, you could be a bit challenged at the moment, feeling like things aren’t going quite the way you’d like.
Either way, you’ll eventually find yourself in the latter, because all of us vascillate between fulfillment & seeking fulfillment to varying degrees. You might even believe you’ve never felt completely fulfilled. I hope that’s not the case, but wherever you find yourself on that spectrum, I have a very simple exercise to help you shift your mindset in this area.
I’ve found thankfulness & gratitude to be one of the most powerful methods for getting a quick mindset shift. Make this a “go-to” exercise often enough & it will become a foundation for the way you live, instead of just something you hope to get to “one day” when everything is going smoothly.
When you’re on that downside, it can cause you to feel like you don’t have much to be thankful for – after all, nothing is going your way. So, the key is to shift the focus away from circumstances. And this is a good practice period because, if you’re used to tuning in to current events, you’ll note that the news media is not in the business of helping you feel thankful. Current circumstances do not necessarily equate with the truth of what is.
This is one of the reasons I chose to sit outside while talking with you today. So, you can see (if you choose to tune into the video) the beauty around me that I’m so thankful for. Even if you listen to the audio only, you can look around in your own environment & focus on the spaciousness. If everything around you is cramped & stifling, the first thing I’d like for you to do is get outside, even if it’s just for a short break. Find a place where you can walk or just sit & observe nature.
This is going to start the mental shift away from circumstances & into the larger world around you – into a world that sometimes seems to be hidden, though it’s right there in front of us.
If you watch the activity of birds for a bit, you’ll notice a carefree feeling…a sense of accessibility to all that’s around them. You & I have the same access to an abundant world.
Most of the time, though, we have to do some mental shifting to recognize it. We’re so used to focusing on circumstances as reality, that we forget there’s a much larger world around us with a different set of circumstances. So, the circumstances are ever shifting. What’s constant, though, is an underlying thread of peace, abundance, beauty, support, & love that we can choose as our focus.
What we focus on the most is what is going to become the more prominent energy presence in our lives.
Last week, my beloved aunt passed on unexpectedly. My family is all gathered together to celebrate her life. She had already been preparing food for our Thanksgiving gathering, so we’ll get to enjoy her cooking one last time…though without her physical presence.
This is a huge shift for our family – there’s a big hole where she stood in the kitchen doing what she loved to do for all of us. We are grieving. We can choose to focus on our loss or we can be thankful that we had the gift of this woman in our lives…& that she left us with so many wonderful memories.
When I gave her eulogy a couple of days ago, I was looking out on my family & on her many friends…& on the stained-glass windows she had created for her church…& I felt so thankful. So thankful to be a part of it all.
I want you to hear… that, even in grief, you can be thankful.
Do this today! Write down 5 things you’re thankful for – this can be people (or animals) in your life, meaningful work, opportunities that have come your way, the beauty of nature, physical abilities…you get the picture.
If you want to notch it up…focus your thoughts on being thankful for what’s eternal – Love. Because that grows your heart, it alleviates feelings of scarity. God…or whatever you call a presence (or knowing) that is within you, yet also larger than you…is eternal. We can be grateful for that. It means we don’t have to figure it ALL out on our own. I don’t know about you…but that relieves stress for me.
Do your best, then let the rest go & be thankful. You’re going to find that you feel lighter…like a weight has been lifted when you do this.
My uncle, Wood Newton, is a Grammy-winning songwriter from Nashville. He wrote a song for the dedication of some stained-glass windows that his sister, Gail, my aunt designed & created with a team she led at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Little Rock, Ark.
While our family is gathered together for Thanksgiving, as well as the memorial service for an amazing woman – Gail Wells – I thought I’d have Wood play the song he wrote for the window dedication. It’s called “Through These Windows”.
SONG / LIVE PERFORMANCE: Wood Newton, “Through These Windows” – ©Rope A Note Music Publishing, BMI
I feel an immeasurable thankfulness & gratitude for my Aunt Gail, for my whole family, & for friends near & far. I appreciate you, wherever you are, because I know if you’re listening to this podcast, you’re a person who is interested in tapping into your core strengths, giving your best, loving deeply, & leading at the highest level you can.
We need that kind of loving strength & leadership in our world. Stay in gratitude. When you feel yourself veering off into aggravation at what’s not going right, pull yourself back to center, refocus on what you’re thankful for. It will keep you grounded & moving forward.

Full Transcript:
I love Halloween! It’s that time. And I am set! With crazy bags of candy and possibly a witch costume. We’ll see about that. Then we have Dia de los Muertos a couple of days after that.
I found a fun read about different celebrations around the world for honoring deceased loved ones. There are a lot of beautiful, fanciful, magical traditions – and one thing is clear – we all have a need to remember those who came before us in some way. And some of these traditions were born out of a need to acknowledge death or transition – because it is an inevitable part of our lives.
Halloween was born out of the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain to mark the beginning of winter. The Celts believed this time to be a marker for spirits to come out and destroy their vegetation, leaving a barren winter landscape. So, they would leave food and wine on their doorsteps to appease the spirits and wear masks, if they left the house, to blend in with them. In the 19th Century, Irish and Scottish immigrants in America began to revive these traditions with more of an emphasis on the trick-or-treating, rather than the religious introspection from their ancestry.
I found a fun read online at Smithsonian Magazine that lists seven festivals around the world if you’re interested in traveling to exotic places for their festivals of music and dancing – like the Obon Festival in Japan, where you see beautiful floating lanterns on the rivers, or Gai Jatra in Kathmandu.
A lot of our festivals have evolved into fun, with a blend of fear – because of our human experience with the unknown. We don’t know what we don’t know and that’s spooky! But, along with the fun, there’s a very real need to connect with the mystery of death – of “what happened” to our loved ones – to the question of “where they are” and “where will I go?”
4:32 – I’ve talked with a lot of men who really want to talk about these deeper mysteries, but don’t because…who are they gonna talk to? There’s a suppression in our culture, because we like to focus on the lighter, more fun side of life. And, especially for men, there’s the expectation of knowing how to fix things, how to handle things…but guess, what? Death will not be “handled”. It has its own say. And, if you leave it there, that can make you feel really powerless. HOWEVER…what you can handle is your perspective and your response.
Because there is a power so much greater than death…and that is Love. And the power you have, personally, is the ability to tap into Love – which overcomes ALL things – death and all manner of things that go bump in the night…like anxiety and worry and fear – be/c those are monsters unto themselves – and they can raise their heads on any given day or time…for any one of us. Male intuition is powerful; it needs to be honored and developed by more men.
5:43 – SONG: “Tell Me Walker” from Frankly Scarlet, Oh Yeah – Get it on Apple Music
10:50 – We have access to Divine help at all times. It’s up to us to connect with our intuition, to be receptive to it.
Transition points in life and in nature lower the veil…make it less dense. So, it’s easier to access your intuitive abilities. Your job is to pay attention.
Right now, the veil is thin, because we’re in seasonal transition.
11:17 – This is what I mean. An experience of knowing that a person – not close to me – had passed on. She was an acquaintance – a friend of a friend I had only met twice and years earlier. Her name was Cindy. I was standing at kitchen sink, getting a glass of water… and suddenly, I saw her in my mind’s eye. She looked straight at me and said, “Tell Lisa to get her sh*t together!” I knew, instantly, that Cindy had just passed – and that news was confirmed the next day – it had happened at the same time she appeared to me.
I did pass the message on to my friend and she said, “That sounds just like Cindy!” And she felt like it was a powerful message she needed to hear. Cindy had apparently been counseling her to stop messing around or she was going to lose her husband.
I find it interesting that, though Cindy had probably told her this in life…my friend found it more powerful to hear it coming from her beyond the veil. Ponder that.
12:28 – I told this, or a similar story, when speaking to a men’s group and as usual, a few guys reached out to me. One said, “I wish I could tap into that – to be able to have those experiences.” I shared some ways he could open up the possibilities. He, like most guys I know, had always felt awkward talking about it – and more, about doing the work of becoming more receptive. Or had never really heard anything about how to use his intuition. Anything he had heard before just sounded too woo-woo to be practical – or it just didn’t feel like a masculine thing to do – he felt like he was dropping his guard. What he didn’t realize is how much more “armored” he could feel by opening up his sixth sense, his male intuition.
13:15 – Another guy in that same audience, became a coaching client, because hearing me talk about it, in such a practical and useful way, he knew he could share some experiences he hadn’t ever told anyone else about – not even his wife! Wow, guys! That’s what’s really spooky here! That is a HUGE secret to carry – and it’s all because of a culture of shame around claiming your sixth sense! Your intuitive abilities are vital to your Wholeness. No one would shame you for saying you have a heightened sense of smell or good eye-sight! And that needs to change. It’s vital for your health and well-being. Developing your sixth sense is not about being able to see ghosts! It’s about being able to receive and interpret information that’s coming to you from a non-physical plane. And, honestly, that’s where your most powerful intel is coming from. Yes, you sometimes need to verify it in the mental or physical plane, but the non-physical or metaphysical is always providing you with what you need and like most people, you’ve closed it off just because you don’t understand it – or because you feel alone, because it challenges your sense of intelligence, or because it touches into emotions that you don’t want to deal with.
14:32 – My dad, felt the same way at times, though he was a very spiritual person and life-long Bible teacher. As he got older, though, he became more and more interested in male intuition because he felt safe discussing his own experiences with me – he knew I wasn’t going to judge him or think he was ridiculous for entertaining the idea that his vision of his deceased mother coming to comfort him was as real as he felt it to be. He could see her and hear her voice as if she was in the room with him…and most of all, he could feel her love and her comforting presence.
And in his last days, he was very tuned in!! I’ll share those stories with you inside my new private group, called The REALM. I’ll put a link in the show notes on NakedVibes.com. I really encourage you to join me there because we all need a tribe – a safe space where we can be seen for who we are, get information about the deeper things that contribute to our health and wholeness, and to have some fun with it all! So, yeah…there will be music in there, for sure.
15:36 – In the last episode, with guitarist Mark Thomas, he talked about how different men are from women when it comes to opening up to creative energy, so a stigma keeps men from tapping into this higher level of awareness, of male intuition.
I can help you with that. Because yes, you guys do approach it differently, and I love to see you thrive as you recognize that you can trust your male intuition (beyond your gut instincts) – and accept it as a strength and courage that will open you up to much more happiness. You’ll hear some great examples of how it works in that conversation with Mark, so go back and take a listen to that.
Men with the courage to look beyond the stigma of developing their intuition as a “soft” trait are setting themselves up for higher levels of awareness and creativity, leading to greater professional success and more satisfying relationships. Guys, you already have the tools built in. Why not develop what ya got?

18:30 – Let’s set emotions to the side – your feelings about it, your judgments on it. And let’s look at it from the angle of gut instincts. Because that’s something that doesn’t rub the wrong way as a masculine man….when I say it. Gut instincts aren’t the same as male intuition, but closely related.
You know if makes sense to pay attention to gut, but you can level it up by understanding more about your intuition and allowing that gut instinct to become more powerful, usable, and reliable.
19:01 – It’s Halloween – a great time to talk about this. Lots of fun!
I want to see you dive into understanding your intuition better so you can feel, or sense, what goes bump in the night before it ever bumps. Yeah. That makes a huge difference in your relationships, in your work. Think about that. Knowing, going into a meeting that what you had planned to talk about…you just feel a vibe in the air before the meeting starts and instead of diving into what you were going to do, now…you’re shifting your gears and you’re going to approach it a little differently. Because someone in that room has got something going on who needs to hear you speak in a different way. And, if you had approached it in the way you had planned, they wouldn’t have heard it. But, by shifting gears, because you felt something…now, you’re seen and heard.
20:01 – Or, in your relationships at home. You walk in the door and you can feel, in the air, that something is amiss. You know what I’m talking about here! And, if you don’t, you need to stop and take some time to weed out all of the extra noise going on in your life…to get quiet and to start noticing some things. The best way to do it is to start noticing nature, what’s around you. And to dive into music and see how it makes you feel.
20:40 – If you’re a man of faith…I get that this could feel a little too woo-woo for you – a little outside the lines of what you’re “allowed” to be thinking about in your faith journey. I can assure you it’s all in the same bucket and you’re safe in it. We can talk more deeply about male intuition inside The REALM.
21:00 – One way you can access your intuition is through music – using it as a tool, intentionally. I was just listening to John Legend, “Who Did That to You” from the Django Unchained Soundtrack. It’s a real mysterious sound. Look that one up – take a listen. Turn it up, sit back and listen. I’m curious to know how it makes you feel. Which is different from what you think about it. Pay attention to how your body feels when you’re listening to it. I’d love to know what comes up for you!
It’s a perfect feel for Halloween.
21:50 – The cool thing about joining The REALM tribe – I’ve got some playlists for you. So you can access some of these deeper feelings swimming around and let that awaken your creativity and male intuition. You will be amazed at how powerful that can be for you.
The REALM is a private group – not on FB or other social media, so you can be…and are encouraged to be…yourself.
Go to NakedVibes.com and sign up for it. We’re gonna have some fun. And you can cancel it at any time. I hope you’ll be a part of what shapes this tribe, though. Because I created it for you…for the successful, creative guy who needs and wants an outlet to connect with other guys who are also there to master their lives, so they can get more out of their intimate relationships and more out of life in general…out of their careers. And to feel a greater sense of satisfaction and happiness. And guys who love music, because as Mark Thomas said, in the last podcast episode, “Music makes everything work better.”
23:15 – Halloween, Dia de los Muertos, a largely Mexican holiday full of joyful celebration rather than mourning for dead loved ones is associated with All Saints Day, All Souls Day. So, connect into this time where the veil is thin. Pay attention to how your body feels – if you get chills when you hear or see something, if you just have a general feeling that there’s something you should pay attention to. Take note. This is your male intuition working within you. It will get stronger as you learn to use it. Meditate. Pray.
23:59 – My unreleased song, “Dark Sky” is about the safety of getting grounded in the mystery. Of being human. But, also, knowing that we’re not from here. We come from a much greater place and we will return there.
SONG: “Dark Sky” by Kimberly Cain, The REALM ©Rhythmic Hips Music, BMI
29:23 – I’m recording under the same name as my private group tribe, The REALM. You can get access to music before it’s released, regular live online meet-ups with me and other special guests, and a whole lot more. I’ve got a lot of fun stuff planned inside The REALM! So, come join me!

Mark’s band, The Mojo Brothers, has recently released a music compilation that can be found on all platforms where music is streamed. In this episode, you’ll hear songs from that compilation, plus hear him play live, as we talk about the importance of music in his life and to men in their desire for a happy life and the ability to connect with family, friends and business associates.
SHOW NOTES:
(times are for audio
1:00 – Mark introduces himself to us with a great guitar riff from the new Mojo Brothers music compilation, Lucky Thirteen, called “Long Shot”! You can find the compilation on all DSPs (link below).
2:15 – Mark has been playing guitar since he was nine years old. We went to high school together and later connected on Facebook when we found we were involved in so many similar pursuits.
4:08 – Mark talks about his journey from college to L.A. and back to Texas where he went into radio sales. He used his music abilities to create great business relationships that resulted in a successful sales career. Over time, he set the music aside due to the responsibilities of corporate work and raising kids.
7:20 – After his kids grew up, he found more time to come back to his music and the result was that his sales numbers went up. He became happier and even more successful in his work. We discuss how important music is in relating to people.
9:11 – Mark’s clients were more interested in knowing him as a guitar player and musician than as their account executive and sales person, so music has been responsible for creating quality personal relationships outside of business.
10:30 – The naivte of not knowing how to sell allowed him to be creative in approaching potential clients from a musical perspective, playing his guitar for them to open the door to conversation. Mark talks about the communication and messaging involved in an effective ad campaign and the way most execs go at it backwards – putting the numbers first and failing to put the time into the creative aspects of advertising.
11:30 – Musicians are entrepreneurs, more and more, as creatives taking their music business online.
13:12 – Men in a black and white thinking pattern struggle to enjoy life by seeing their dreams and desires in the past and their present responsibilities as the only choice, leading them to burn-out, depression and anxiety. When Mark didn’t take time to play due to other responsibilities, he became very frustrated. Growing up listening to the radio led him to want to learn to play guitar at an early age, so getting back to it was key to starting his own business. Timing is an important element in creating music and Mark found that the same concept applies in business. His company, Thomas Media, was formed through understanding right timing with the right people as partners and has been a successful outgrowth of his creative approach to relationships with customers.
16:45 – The journey of being an entrepreneur or small business person can be scary because the success of your career is on your shoulders. But, having the courage to do it, in the face of fear, is worth it.
18:45 – Mark talks about the timing of restarting his band and performing live as his kids went to college.
20:23 – His lead singer leaves with a gig only ten days out. Mark talks about winging it with the new singer in the Mojo Brothers Band three years ago.
22:15 – SONG: “Women, Cars, Guns, & Guitars” – from The Mojo Brothers compilation, Lucky Thirteen (link below)
27:20 – You can use music in an intentional way to shift your perspectives and your energy. If you’re down, you can use it as a tool to lift yourself up and when feeling anxious or too tense, it can be used to bring the energy down for relaxation.
29:15 – Mark has used music to get through tough and painful times in his life. He uses it to relax his mind at the end of the day. It creates better mental health, leading to greater enjoyment in life.

31:22 – Songs exist. As writers, we capture them. It’s up to us to pay attention and serve the song. If we don’t capture it when it comes, it will leave and find another way. Creativity is like lightning. We are the conduits. When we don’t engage in creative endeavors and allow the energy to flow through us, it can result in a cranky mood.
34:17 – Does Mark have a “go-to” riff? He plays it live for us and I can feel where it leads. We agree there must be science behind our “starting points”, our notes or chords where we continually start. Major keys versus minor keys create different feelings within us. I tend to lean to the minor keys when I’m writing and it may be because it feels like accessing the mystery of creativity and live. Country music and rock music stem from different places in the pentatonic scale.
37:43 – Music allows us to better tap into the feelings of others. It can help us be more compassionate and understanding. It can be more difficult for men to tap into deeper feelings. Mark talks about the way men are judged and where it starts in childhood. He talks about teaching his kids how important it is to keep from worrying about the things in life that don’t matter. It’s family and friends that are most important. We should teach kids, starting at a young age, that chasing the things that don’t matter will never lead to happiness. Music is a way that Mark balances his emotions.
41:07 – When Mark plays live music, he’s aware that the audience is there to have fun, blow off steam, forget about troubles and he want to do that with them and for them. It dictates what the band plays. Putting the audience first and putting things in perspective serves people. It creates experiences for them that they remember and that make them happy. Music makes everything else work.
42:41 – Music is a community endeavor and can be a spiritual experience to connect with others creating it. The communication between musicians goes beyond the thinking mind and provides the ability to let go and relate to others in a completely different way. The process is therapeutic and listeners can engage in it as well.
44:21 – The struggles that men go through to carry the heavy weight of life and providing for others can become much lighter by changing your mind set through activities that lift you up and make you happy. Engage in activities that help you find your center and stay in touch with who you are, with your dreams and desires. There is never a time in life when you should let go of what creates the spark of life within you. When you let the “inner rock star” come alive, many problems take care of themselves.
48:20 – A man should never be embarrassed or feel guilty about keeping his passions alive.
49:17 – SONG: “Lightning Comes Around”
Great music playlists, curated with a specific purpose in mind, can help you get to know yourself better. You can use music consciously and powerfully for healing, resurrecting dreams, awakening confidence and accessing your creative core.
Transcript / Show Notes:
I’m Kimberly Cain. Welcome to the Naked Vibes Show. In this episode, I’ll discuss the value of music playlists for self-discovery and living a more adventurous life – getting back to your core Self. If you’re new to the show, you’ll find it’s a blend of music and personal development because I love both and I know we all learn better when we’re able to relax our minds and have some fun in the mix. Some episodes of the show contain provocative conversations with musicians for stimulating your core creativity and inspiring you into greater levels of energy, conscious productivity and joy. And other episodes are what I call Tune Your Vibes, where I deliver some ideas and inspiration, and often some fun exercises to help you shift gears when you’re stuck, to enlarge your world by helping you see from more angles than you might have otherwise considered, and to help you recognize how amazing you are – to see how much the addition of your particular energy at work in the world matters in the grand scheme of things. And there’s always music involved. This is one of those episodes.

2:23 – I’ve was just listening to a playlist that swings from “No Quarter” (because a friend mentioned that song the other day and I hadn’t heard it in a while – awesome) to “Nina Cried Power” from Hozier (featuring the amazing Mavis Staples), to Midland with “Drinking Problem”, to a new one from Norwegian singer Sigrid, “It Gets Dark”, London Grammar’s “Missing”, which has some cool, interesting lyrics, and onto “Black Hole Sun” from Soundgarden. I wish I could play all of those for you…but, copyright issues. So, I have to stick to playing my own music and the music of those I know who have given me permission. But, I have other ways of getting those lists to you, so you can access them on your own. When I was a rock ’n roll DJ, I loved it, but I was constrained by corporate playlists. Now, I can mix up whatever I want to fit the mood I’m in or create the one I want to be in. Stick around and I’ll tell you how you can access some very cool, curated playlists later in the show.
3:30 – Music is the most mysterious, amazing, rapid form of healing. It has these energetic properties that are so powerful and unique and it touches us in places and ways where nothing else can. It travels across great distances and through time and gives us complete connection to one another, to the natural world and to the Divine. I love hearing stories about the way it transforms people.
As I mentioned in Episode 29, I’ll be getting back to bringing you conversations with musicians to take you deeper into their creative processes and inspire you to dive into your own, so you can continue to get to know yourself better and better.
Making yourself your own best friend has immeasurable benefits. I’ve always enjoyed personal growth and have delved into a lot of methods of self-discovery. It’s interesting how it has a way of deepening my compassion for others. As I understand more about myself, I understand more about you. And I grow to care for you even more. We’re human and we go through many of the same joys and pains, even though they come wrapped in different packages.
I’m hearing a common thread from people in regard to their feelings about life on this side of the pandemic.
A lot of people have experienced, and are still experiencing, a great deal of hardship in a lot of different areas. I’ve experienced my own and even though it can feel very isolating – I’m very aware of the high degree of similarity to other people’s experiences. It’s such a different place to be in this world at this time – where people feel isolated and yet we have so much in common in the journey!
So, it feels like we need to be at work to create community – to connect with our tribe – very intentionally.
5:42 – I’ve been thinking about this for quite a while – years, in fact. I’ve brought guys together in coaching groups to help them move beyond barriers they were facing, to access more joy and fun, so they could remember how powerful and courageous they are, and performed in music concert settings to create experiences of freedom, release, joy, laughter, and communion with others. The idea of creating a space where you can tap into the fun, stress relief and release, and the exhilaration provided by music, coupled with resources for personal growth, and a tribe of others who desire to live in the consciousness of their highest potential is very exciting to me. So, I’m diving into that idea and making that space available. It’s hard and messy because it involves hooking up this piece of tech to that piece, yadda, yadda. Not my favorite part. But…at the same time, I’m amazed at what’s possible. The tribe part is really up to you. You have to show up and let me know you’re here and tell me what you want to hear, learn and talk about, what inspires you and what challenges you, so I can provide resources to help you do and be your best.
I’ve been connecting, in seemingly random ways lately, with a lot of successful, creative men…note seemingly random. I’m paying attention to this call; to what they’re sharing with me. They have a desire to reconnect to their courage, confidence, strength, vitality and joy. And I’m hearing stories that remind me of a song I wrote years ago about a friend of mine. I want to play that for you here and I just want you to listen to the lyrics. See if you can relate to it. Don’t let the fact that it’s about a woman or a particular circumstance get in your way. In other words, don’t put it in a “chick song” category. We all have plans that go awry and leave us feeling vulnerable and like “This is not what I signed up for!”
I’ll tell you more about this tribal gathering spot a little later in the show. I’m excited about it and I think you will be to, if you’re a fan of this podcast. We all need music! We need it for taking a mental break, for remembering our desires and our strength, for connecting with each other, for amping up our energy and for having pure fun. I’m gonna give you more ways to enjoy the healing power of music. Right now, take a listen. This was recorded by my former band, Frankly Scarlet (the duo of my sister, Kelly and me). It’s called “Beautiful”.
8:32 – SONG: “Beautiful” – from Oh Yeah by Frankly Scarlet. Words and Music ©KB Cain. Here’s the link for you to get it on Apple Music. (Apple Music can be finicky – if it doesn’t readily connect, search Frankly Scarlet, Oh Yeah)
12:06 – Do you ever feel like you’re living someone else’s life? Like this is not what you had planned!
Maybe you’ve gone through divorce, feel lost in trying to make a career transition, bored in your marriage, wishing you had more energy to engage in a more adventurous life, dreaming of something “new”, “different”, “better”, but don’t really know what that is, you’re recovering from injury or dealing with lingering health issues that are concerning. There are SO many things that can cause us to feel like we’re standing outside of our own lives.
And, it doesn’t matter how successful we become. These issues touch people in different ways at different times. Especially when making some kind of life transition. And, I’ve gotta say, we’ve all been going through transition in this world over the last couple of years in a big way.
13:15 – Here’s something I want you to play with. Make a list of 5 of your favorite songs. Pull them together in whatever way you like – a playlist, CDs if you still use them, whatever works for you. Give yourself permission to do nothing but listen to those 5 songs in your own private space. When I say “do nothing” but that, I mean it – no walking the dog or working out with earbuds, playing it in the background while you’re checking email, or anything else. Just listen. This will be a different experience for some of you. But, it’s super important – because, as you listen, I want you to really pay attention to how you feel. Notice if your feelings change as the songs change or if your playlist puts you in one particular mood. Let your imagination inform you about your choices and why you resonate with the messages, grooves, rhythms, or melodies of these specific songs. This will be a meditation. It will take you on a journey. When you’re finished listening, write down what you noticed. It doesn’t have to be a thesis – just whatever observations floated to the surface for you. It’s all about getting to know yourself better, what your desires are, your hopes, dreams, and challenges. The more you know, the better you can move through this world and create the life you want to live.
This exercise just scratches the surface – yet, it can lead to deep and profound places and feelings within you. That’s the beauty of music. It can take you to where you need to go when you learn to use it intentionally.
15:43 – I’ve got a lot more ways to help you connect with your inner power through music. And I’ll be sharing them with you over the next few episodes. As I said, I’m building the space for our tribe to gather right now. You can tap into as much or as little as you want. Curated playlists, guided meditations, and premium audio and video content that I don’t share anywhere else. Live music from the artists you’ll be hearing on the podcast, with opportunities to connect with them personally. And monthly live connection with me, so I can get to know the best ways to serve you and provide content that helps you to really thrive. The coolest part is that we’ll be able to connect for conversations in small group settings over video and you’ll be able to discuss topics of interest to you in a private, respectful, and energetic setting with like-minded people off of social media. And some Zoom-style drum circles are in order! Yes to that for amping up your energy!

I was recently at a podcasting convention, Podcast Movement, where I got to see a lot of cool new recording gear and meet a lot of great people. I was at an expo booth talking to a guy about video gear and somewhere in our conversation, I mentioned that I lost my father a couple of years ago.
Our conversation turned to the recent loss of his dad & the grief he was feeling. It was very fresh for him. He said he hadn’t really shared that with anyone. When I told him how much I could feel my dad with me in Spirit, still encouraging me, his face lit up with joy and he expressed how much relief he felt in hearing that.
We laughed about it and the conversation and connection went much deeper because we were able to be vulnerable, instead of just having the same conversation he was having most of the day about gear.
5:14 – SONG: Love Remains – from Local Honey’s Late Bloomer CD
Don’t be afraid to share yourself. You don’t have to live in the story of your pain. You’ll feel much less alone when you do.
