  • E006: Future of Energy Sector with Yongping Zhai

Dr. Yongping Zhai, the Chief of Asian Development Bank's Energy Sector Group explains his journey from the African Development bank to Asian Development Bank just after the Asian Financial Crisis. He shares his observations on the changing priorities for the energy sector as countries have developed, and explains how his team prioritizes environmental sustainability and climate change, which is at the forefront of today's priorities.

He discusses the trilemma—access to energy, availability, and cheap or free supply, and shares his view on the role technology might play in solving tomorrow's challenges. He is passionate about three technologies, clean heating or clean cooking with solar, microgrid, and digital solutions, and is looking for solutions even with a $500,000 prize for the right technology. In the end, in explaining ADB's Strategy 2030 and how it may change the energy sector, he shares his controversial view about the future of the ADB's energy sector beyond 2025.

  • E005: Battery Industry Global and Trends with Andrew Kwon

Batteries are changing the world. And today our guest is battery guru from South Korea, who has been in the industry for about 20 years. Andrew discussed the 5 key suppliers that produce 90% of today's Lithium-Ion battery and how battery prices changed over the years and continuing. We explored his views on the shortage of raw materials, the future of pricing, and second-life batteries. Although I don't agree fully with his views about second-life batteries and the prospect of using first-generation Nissan Leaf batteries for on-grid operations, it was an exciting discussion and lot to learn from his candid views. We touched on many topics from safety issues especially concerns on fire hazards, and the importance of a good battery management system (BMS) and recycling of batteries. We found out about Andrew's dream to become an energy service provider, by developing many high-tech services to optimize the impact of batteries on the power system, especially distribution systems. To find more about new opportunities involving batteries, understand its support chain, the duck-curve, off-grid power, and whether it is a good idea to go into battery manufacturing or not especially for countries like India. • E004: Solar Power in the Philippines with Glen Tong

Today we discuss solar power with Glenn Tong, a leading solar entrepreneur in the Philippines. I met Glenn more than 10 years back when as a young entrepreneur, his company installed the largest rooftop solar installation (570 kW) in the Southeast Asian region. Since that project in June 2012, Glenn and his team have been involved in about 30,000 small and large solar projects.

In this episode, we discussed the current status of solar in the country, how it was different before, and what it would look like in the future. Glenn does mention about his observation on people's behavior and attitude about solar when we are all under a strict quarantine regime. How solar has become much more affordable and practical choice today side by side with the grid-supplied electricity.

The future of solar seems very bright for the Philippines. Want to find more, please listen to today's episode and get his insights.

  • E003: Batteries And Batteries

Batteries are no longer just AAA batteries for your flashlights or remote controls. Batteries are BIG today. They are even replacing and disrupting power generation. Batteries are also making electric cars possible.

Today's Lithium-ion batteries with its long life are giving new life to solar power, and creating amazing new project possibilities. The 100-year-old technology, electric cars are also getting a new lease of life with Lithium-ion batteries. Here we talk about battery size, weight, and ranges. I will discuss more on electric vehicles in a separate series of episodes.

Photography and good camera used to be an exclusive tool for professionals but today cameras are everywhere, tomorrow it will be batteries in all our appliances.

Today, we are even talking about batteries in homes as the new whitegoods. In South Australia, the government even subsidizes 10,000 homes to install batteries. Finally, I discuss the transformative power of batteries in 3 fundamental parameter—prices, lighter, long life many more cycles.

I think the battery price will eventually hit $50 a kWh—unimaginable yesterday but soon a possibility. Just don't be ready for tomorrow, just stay ready.

  • E002: Solar Power On The Move

Sun is the ultimate source of energy. Humanity has looked for energy and fossil fuels under the ground for way too long, but now the time has come that we look up. We all have the sun, and the ability to generate electricity from it, which is also getting cheaper every day. If we all use solar power, today's energy divide—the energy-poor and the energy-rich—among countries will come to an end.

Now is the time to think big and develop ideas for large and small scale opportunities. Following today's trend, soon solar power will bring us almost free electricity and transportation.

In this episode, we discuss leapfrogging opportunities for all of us. The opportunities for DC power and electric vehicles that run on free solar power—this will eventually allow us to move far away places and islands without concerns of access to grid power. I also discuss how the price trends for solar power and batteries.

About Energypreneurs

From the publisher's feed

Energypreneurs is a podcast that brings solar power, electric vehicles and battery technologies to young entrepreneurs. Sohail Hasnie, our host, is a firm believer that the solution to climate change lies in these technologies, which will also fundamentally change the way we think about electricity and transportation—on road, on water and even on air.
