In the early 19th century the legal supply of human bodies for medical research in Britain was limited only to criminals given the death penalty. The supply was insufficient for the number of medical students who needed cadavers. The difference was made up by body-snatching.

The story is based on criminals who committed murder for profit, notably William Burke and William Hare in 1827-1828 in Scotland. Burke and Hare were found guilty and executed. Their bodies were used as medical school cadavers.

In just about two weeks after this episode, Suspense would implement its “star” policy and in five months would be officially moved from New York City to Hollywood.

Based on the story by Edward Everett Hale. The story follows an American army lieutenant, Philip Nolan, who during a treason trial declares he never wants to hear about the United States again. As a consequence, he is sentenced to spend the rest of his life on naval ships, never allowed to set foot on American soil or receive any news about the country.

The story was published during the American Civil War, and was intended to inspire patriotism among citizens by highlighting the severity of renouncing one's country.
