St. Francis started to feel like even though he had everything, everything was not enough. He was still wanting something, looking for something, hungry for something. God had made Francis for more than just wealth or popularity or success or parties. God had made Francis for something way more wonderful.

So everything else he had, even all stacked up and added together, was not enough. Francis was made to live in a relationship with God to follow Jesus all of his earthly life so that he could spend his eternal life with him in heaven. So Francis gave up literally everything so that he could follow Jesus more completely

The virtue that overcomes envy is magnanimity, which allows us to rejoice when someone else is blessed, and to feel saddened when they hurt. The Lord wants us to rejoice in his generosity. Let’s ask the Lord to heal our hearts of any envy, and help us to rejoice and be happy when he pours out his gifts to everyone who knows Him.

If he’s actually God, as he claims he is, then what does that mean for our obedience? What does it mean about the things he has commanded us to do? And most importantly, what does it mean for you?

In this reflection for the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Colin MacIver tells us that we should focus on what it is that God tells us to focus on–the commandments and the things that we’re given to do as Catholics. If we follow those and we seek to understand them in our hearts, then we’ll be growing more and more, and following the law (or the rules of our house) become easier and make more sense.

We have rules for a reason. For example, washing your hands during a pandemic is a good rule with a good reason. What Jesus is saying in the Gospel is that if we only focus on the human rules, we miss out on what God has in store for us. Focusing on what God wants, and what we’ve learned from the Church helps us to see all of the rules in life in the right way, with the right perspective.
