  • Wood Basics For Your Next Construction Project - Entrepreneur Podcast Network – EPN

You are embarking on a new house project and need to go shopping for lumber, but with so many options out there, it is hard to know where to begin. For starters, there is hardwood and softwood, treated and untreated wood, cedar and spruce, and different lengths and widths to make every woodworkers dreams come true. However, choosing the wrong wood for your project could mean the difference between wood warping and wood lasting a decade or more. Choosing the right wood could also save you money if your project can be done as well with a less expensive wood as a top of the line wood. Below we will define for you terminology you are likely to come across when shopping for lumber and when in doubt, visit a local lumber company, such as the experts at Lyndhurst Lumber, to guide you in the right direction.

    Hardwood versus Softwood

Hardwood trees are the kinds of trees that lose their leaves every year, or are considered deciduous. Hardwood trees grow much slower than softwood trees, so their lumber is much more dense and stronger. Wood that is more dense is best used for making furniture and building structures, while less dense wood is more applicable in woodworking projects. Hardwoods also have more intricate grain patterns. Grains are considered when we talk about the aesthetic beauty of a project and its strength. Tight grains are stronger than loose grains. In decorative projects, you may want to opt for hardwoods whose grains will add character. Softwoods are coniferous trees and have small grains that are not very noticeable in the final project. Softwoods are good for framing and outdoor projects and range from cedar and fir to spruce and pine.

    Treated versus Untreated

Treated lumber is desirable for outdoor projects because it has a preservative forced into it to protect it against rot and insect damage. Use pressure treated lumber for projects that contact the ground or where insects are problematic. Do not use pressure-treated lumber where food or children will come into close contact with it. If you want to use rot and insect resistant wood, but do not want to use treated wood, some woods are naturally resistant, like redwood and red cedar. You also have the option of buying untreated wood and applying a plain oil-based exterior paint to it.

    Lumber Sizes

For framing projects, use lumber that is 2×4. 2×4 is the most common pieces of lumber you will use for house projects, but 1×3 lumber is used in installing stripping for residential metal roofing projects. What’s more, wood comes in more dimensions than “2 bys” and “1 bys.” Depending on your project, you may need plywood or Medium Density Fiberboard (or MDF). With a litle research or call to you lumber company, your woodworking project is off to a good start.

  • How the Gaming Industry Embraces Bitcoin? - Entrepreneur Podcast Network – EPN

One of the biggest worries that online gaming players face is related to the safety of their identities. Since the players use payment mechanisms like credit cards and e-wallets to make deposits, they are bound to share their identities and other personal information with the online gaming sites. Many players consider this as a hindrance and are looking for better options that can keep their details private. As online gaming is increasing in popularity, more and more players are now entering this domain. The advancements in block-chain technology have led to many gaming sites like online casino, online bingo sites accepting Bitcoin currency.

Let’s look at some of the major reasons that could make Bitcoin an ideal payment choice:

    Requires minimal disclosure

One of the biggest advantages that consumers get while using technologies like Bitcoin for online gaming purposes is in terms of protecting their identity. Now, let’s suppose you are planning to play online slots, bingo games at a reputed portal such as Sailor Bingo. If you are planning to use cryptocurrency like Bitcoin for your transaction, all you would need is declare your name and address. You do not have to share confidential information such as bank account or credit card details. This level of anonymity was never possible before in the online gambling domain. It is sure to draw more and more people into embracing such payment mechanisms. Players feel more secure and safe transacting through the cryptocurrency medium.

    Easy withdrawals and deposits

Another big difference that online casino players feel with the use of Bitcoin currency is the speed at which deposits and withdrawals can be made at online casinos. In the current scenario, customers generally do not find problems when making deposits. However, when it comes to making withdrawals, there are a lot of challenges that consumers usually face. Most of the times, players face unwarranted delays when it comes to getting the money back from these online portals. The use of cryptocurrency will change all that and deposit and withdrawal transactions will happen at amazing speeds. This will make the consumers feel at ease as they know that they can have quick access to their money whenever they need it.

    Reduced transaction costs

Today, when you make an online deposit or withdrawals from online casino portals, you must shell out transaction charges and other fees to credit card companies or other payment portals. At times these charges can turn out to be exorbitant and online players have always been complaining about the same. When cryptocurrency comes into play all these charges will vanish. The online casino can charge their customers a very minimal fee for the service however the customer will not have to shell out anymore high transaction charges. These huge savings are bound to bring a smile on the face of consumers. Imagine the amount of money that will be saved.

With so much action happening in the cryptocurrency domain they day is not far when all online casinos will soon be opening their doors to this technology.

  • Surviving the Offseason - Entrepreneur Podcast Network – EPN

The Super Bowl in early February signals the true end of American football season. Unless you’re a fan of either the Eagles or Patriots, the season already ended anywhere from two weeks to a month before the opening kickoff of the biggest game of the year. If you’re into college football, then the season ended January 8, when Alabama came back to defeat Georgia in overtime. These are dark times for football fans. There’s simply no sports experience quite like getting up on a fall weekend and taking in the games from the comfort of your couch, or, if you can afford it, from a seat in the home team’s stadium. There are a couple of strategies you can take while you try to make it to August, when football becomes a reality again.

    See your friends and family

There’s a decent chance some of your loved ones share the same passion for the sport that you do, but that doesn’t mean you all like the same team. Your fantasy football league probably has great parties in the autumn, but it’s not autumn anymore, and it would be nice to see those pals before you come together in the late summer and fill out your fantasy football draft boards. But first there are the family members who have sat by patiently as you yelled at the TV for the last few months. So here’s what you do: spend quality time with the non-football fans in your life first. If you have a significant other, take them out to a nice dinner. At this dinner, do not mention Aaron Rodgers’ injury, the Giants’ new coach, or anything else that has to do with college or pro football. Your significant other loves you and wants to see you happy, and that’s why he or she doesn’t interfere with your love of the sport. It’s time to return the favor by shutting about it for at least one night. If your partner brings it up, that’s one thing, but the focus should be on each other, not sports. At some point, it’s also not a bad idea to thank him or her for never getting frustrated and trying to hide your favorite jersey after another early playoff exit. If you’re a fan of the Browns, then you should thank them twice. Once you’ve spent quality time with your significant other, you can worry about going out with your pals

    Stock up on merchandise

Once spring has arrived and you’re no longer feeling the sting of how the season ended, then you can start looking for deals on your favorite team apparel and merchandise. Fewer people buy team memorabilia in the offseason, so you’ve got a better chance of finding some good deals. If possible, focus on locally-owned team stores rather than the big brand names. A store like Tiger People in Baton Rouge can offer a more personalized experience because they’re fans like you. It’s always better to buy from your fellow fans whenever you can. For some people, “Geaux Tigers” and “Gig ‘em” are just words. But if you’re a fan of the LSU Tigers or the Texas A&M Aggies, those slogans represent a way of life.

  • Are You Using Common Sense When It Comes to Your Children’s Needs After the Divorce? - Entrepreneur Podcast Network – EPN
Divorce is not easy on any member of the family, but when it comes to our children, it is our responsibility as the parents to make choices that are in the best interest of our children. While we may have needs, wants, and our own personal issues, part of being a parent is letting those take a back seat to what our children need to best adjust during this difficult time. There are several key, common issues that spring to mind, that might seem obvious to come, but are happening far more often than many night think. These are the issues we are going to focus on, as they are issues most common to families early in the divorce and separation process. They are the issues that demonstrate the most significant boundary issues between parent and child, and the most long-term issues of resentment in the parent-child relationship.
The first issue is that of not talking about the other parent in front of the children. This is essential. If you need to talk to your friends, your family, or anyone else about your feelings and frustrations about your ex-partner, make sure that your children are out of ear shot. This is their parent. It is your duty to protect them from what is going on between the two of, to protect he image they have of both of their parents, and to be respectful of the love and belief they have of BOTH of their parents. You would want and expect the same respect in return. This is vitally important, and your child will remember how you conducted yourself during this time as they get older.
Following this, don’t put your child in the position of being your confidant. They are your child, they are not your friend. You are putting them in the middle, you are asking them to choose sides, without directly doing so. You are telling them things and situations about their parent that no child should be privy to, you have crossed a line that there is no coming back from. I have worked with many children who have entered therapy dealing with issues of anxiety due to needing help to process and cope with this burden and responsibility that that been unfairly placed upon them by their parent.
Let your child be a child. Be mindful of what information you are sharing with them, and what boundaries you are setting and not crossing. Remember that once you put your child in this role, it is hard to take it back. If you need someone to confide in this badly about your current situation, stop, check yourself, and consider your options, then pick one that is not destructive to your child.
The third and final topic is that of re-entering the dating world. There are many different opinions on what is the proper amount of time that someone should be dating before they introduce them to their children, but within those theories should be some obvious absolute DON’T’S. My typical suggestions are to not introduce someone to your children for a minimum of at least 6+ months of dedicated dating, and that is only if you believe that the relationship has the potential to be long-term and to have a future. Some people would not consider it before a year.  There are many more people who fall on this end of the line, and they are not the ones who we are concerned about. The ones that we are concerned about, are the ones who seem to have no issue introducing individuals to their young children on first dates, or after one date.
The age of the children does of course play a factor in timeframes, because if your children are grown and out of the house you can do whatever you like. However, if your children are young, or even of a young dating age themselves, you want to think of the example you are setting, the messages you are sending, and the difficult emotions you are forcing them to work through. They may still be processing the end of a long-term relati…

  • Exclusive Interview with Combat Veteran Isaac Belden, the President of 12B Capital - Entrepreneur Podcast Network – EPN
Tell us about the history of your 12B Capital, your mission, and the most important details that the world should know about.
I have worked in the credit card process and business funding space for about eight years now. I’ve always been a people person and loved working with business owners, getting to know their stories and providing them solutions that would help their businesses grow. The problem I kept running into was that you could only do so much for clients when someone else is making the rules. I arrived at a point where I realized that if I wanted to make the most of my efforts I needed to have full control. So, I started my business with the idea that things could be accomplished better. It seemed that nobody wanted to build real relationships with clients anymore and that was truly hurting the industry. Also, the way the industry has operated continues to have a negative impact on the way it’s viewed in the business community. I set out to cut through all of the fast talk and unrealistic promises; I wanted to connect with people. I wanted them to know that we are in this together and that their success is my success.
What does the future look like for 12B Capital?
Disruption, plain and simple. I am going to keep fighting to show business owners that things can be done differently in this space. Just because they have been done wrong in the past doesn’t mean it has to be that way. This is actually an exciting time for 12B Capital, we recently launched a program called 12B Gives and I truly believe it’s going to change the face of the credit card processing world! Through our program, we are bringing for-profit and non-profit businesses together to create a mutually beneficial relationship. We have created a way for non-profits to offer their potential business donors a gift rather than asking for a donation. This is done by leveraging the businesses credit card processing, and we guarantee that we will meet or beat their current rate. But that’s what everyone says, so we don’t stop there. As a company, 12B Capital takes a portion of the fees the business owner pays and donates it to the non-profit who creates that relationship. This is done for as long as the business owner chooses to work with us. Furthermore, this creates an opportunity for the business owner to support a worthy cause without spending any more than they currently are, and more often than not we end up saving them money.
How has your military training or your experience with veterans affected your leadership, career, or business in the civilian world?
I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for my time in the military. The confidence that I gained is invaluable in my everyday interactions with the people around me. Unfortunately, my service also brought loss into my life as well. I struggled for a long time to get it together after I re-entered “the real world.” I lost my best friend in 2009, he never entirely made it out of that struggle. But that pain has led me to do what I’m doing today, that loss truly inspired the first non-profit that we started working with. I more or less stalked a local organization called The Wyakin Foundation until they agreed to sit down with me to discuss what we were trying to do with our 12B Gives program. This group got me fired up because they are serving local veterans and helping them reintegrate through education and job placement. My passion for their cause made me realize how valuable something like this could be for all types of non-profits all over the world as well as the business owners that choose to support them.
What advice do you have for veterans and military spouses that are aspiring to become entrepreneurs?
Do it! I struggled for a long time trying to make up my mind about what to do, and it …

  • How to Improve Your Career Prospects - Entrepreneur Podcast Network – EPN

Are you stuck in a career rut and want to shift gears? Do you have your eye on a promotion but just aren’t sure of how to get there from where you are? Feeling unsatisfied in a job is not uncommon, but in order to find a more satisfying career path or gain a promotion, you need to look at ways to improve your prospects, whether that’s undertaking further study to gain qualifications or taking a sabbatical to help reinvigorate you.

    Train on the job

Take a look at the career advancement possibilities that exist in your current workplace. Perhaps there are training courses that can lead to a management position, or short courses to help you develop specific skills. If your current employer can pay for your training or qualification, you are in a good position to boost your skill set and also ask for a promotion once you have finished the course.

    Make a five-year plan

Sometimes thinking about where you want to be in five years time and writing it down can help to focus your mind and get you closer to reaching your goals. Set milestones that are achievable so you can celebrate each step that takes you closer to your career goal and then you won’t be put off by feeling success is unattainable.

    Volunteer

If your current role is not providing job satisfaction, but you aren’t sure where you want to go yet, then why not volunteer with a local community group? Not only can this give your skills a boost, but it can also provide a support network and new opportunities for meeting people. You never know where a casual conversation about changing career path will lead or whom you will meet.

    Take a sabbatical

When stuck in a rut a good idea can be to do something completely different and come back reinvigorated. Taking a sabbatical may feel counterintuitive in these competitive times, however, taking time off can benefit your career and help you develop new skills that will be a bonus to your current role on your return.

    Study

Gaining qualifications is a sure-fire way to improve your career prospects, and often doing an online course can cause the least disruption to the rest of your life as you won’t need to relocate, nor have huge student debts to pay off. Courses such as those offered by South Dakota online degree programs provide a flexible way to gain qualifications from an accredited and affordable university, around your current commitments. They’re a great value for money, and they mean you can study for in-demand careers without having to spend a lot of money for full-time study.

    Travel

If the thought of Monday morning fills you with dread, then pack a bag and go traveling, get outside your comfort zone, and you may be surprised at the new skills you develop. Seeing the world can help put things in perspective or give you a new direction to go in. Traveling can help improve your language skills and self-confidence, as well as other transferable skills such as budget management and communication skills. The adaptability required to go traveling around the world will also ensure you are in a strong position to take on new roles in the future.
