Aunque ha existido desde los orígenes de la humanidad, la migración continúa siendo un problema sin aparente resolución. Las crisis económicas, sociales y políticas generan en el mundo decenas de millones de desplazados cada año. En la actualidad, la migración es parte de la agenda política de la mayoría de los candidatos y partidos en Europa y en América. Recientemente, la revista norteamericana Christianity Today reporta datos sobre las actitudes que los evangelicos norteamericanos tienen hacia la inmigración. Lamentablemente, la indecisión de la cristiandad hacia el extranjero pobre y desamparado es un problema global. Al parecer, muchos olvidan la propia historia, las razones y causas de los movimientos humanos y la responsabilidad bíblica hacia el inmigrante, substituyéndolas por idearios políticos muy convenientes.

Los líderes religiosos suelen preocuparse mucho por los números: Cuántos seguidores se pueden alcanzar, en cuanto tiempo, cuánto espacio se necesita, cuánto tiempo toma esa tarea, de cuántos recursos se dispone... números y más números. Interesantemente, en un reciente artículo publicado por Christianity Today, el pastor Andrew Wilson, de la iglesia King's Church de Londres, se pregunta sobre esa numérica a la luz del libro de Números, en el Pentateuco. Es una propuesta interesante que enfrenta la aparente falta de "coherencia narrativa" del libro y la necesidad de encontrar en él una fuente de devoción y aprendizaje. Sin dudas, esa es una tarea difícil en un libro que nos lanza a preguntarnos como la Biblia es "Palabra de Dios" cuando incluye datos que parecen sacados de la hoja de cálculo de algún libro de cuentas. Después de todo, el evangelio de Jesucristo parece estar más interesado en la calidad que en la cantidad.

La mayoría de nosotros podemos disculparnos sin verdaderamente admitir nuestra culpa ni mostrar arrepentimiento. Así que, en la mayoría de los casos, decir "lo siento" es una cortesía sin intencionalidad de restitución o reparación del daño causado. A veces, es simplemente un sentimiento de empatía por alguna pérdida ajena que pudiera no afectarnos demasiado. En estos días, la revista norteamericana Christianity Today nos sorprende afirmando que los personajes bíblicos nunca dicen "lo siento", por lo menos en el sentido contemporáneo. Al parecer, aunque existen expresiones de empatía en algunos de sus personajes, la Biblia requiere que la disculpa vaya acompañada de los proverbiales "dolor de constricción" (arrepentimiento), "examen de conciencia" (confesión) y "propósito de enmienda" (restitución/conversión). El otro lado de la disculpa es, el otorgar y recibir el perdón... y ese es otro tema.

Una misma obra literaria pudiera significar cosas distintas para distintos lectores. Ese pudiera ser el caso del dramaturgo inglés Wliiam Shakespeare. Recientemente, un artículo del diario The Economist, al considerar la remodelación de la Biblioteca Folguer en Washington DC, comenta que para la derecha, Shakespeare es "vulgar" y algunos de sus libros han sido questionados por el sistema de educación pública del estado de Florida. Para la izquierda, el escritor inglés representa la masculinidad blanca y misógina de un pasado que hay que combatir. A pesar de esa amplitud interpretativa, pocas veces se lee a Shakespeare, o a cualquier otro escritor clásico, buscando atisbos de lo divino. ¿Pudiera una obra literaria iluminar nuestra fe? Quizás deberíamos empezar reconociendo que hay historias en la Biblia que revelan algo de Dios, incluso cuando a Dios no se le menciona.

Ser el único ser humano vivo en el planeta es un horror propio de la ciencia ficción. La soledad profunda y extrema es terrorífica y, sin embargo, es un sentimiento que experimentan una de cada cinco personas en el mundo. Es la soledad de gente rodeada de gente. Ya sea física, emocional o existencialmente, más de 2,000 millones de seres humanos creen no tener compañía alguna en un planeta sobrepoblado. Aunque ese tipo de sentimiento de soledad es atribuido a circumstancias personales, pudiera existir una propensión neurológica a sentir el aislamiento y la soledad. Interesantemente, este no parece ser un fenómeno exclusivo del individualista mundo industrializado. De hecho, los sentimientos de soledad absoluta son cada vez mas prominentes en las sociedades tradicionales y no industrailizadas de África y Asia. Desafortunadamente, personas con estos sentimientos extremos de soledad pululan las comunidades de fe cristiana que dicen basarse en la cercanía relacional, el cuidado mutuo y la consideración que resultan del amor sacrificial.

El pedagogo norteamericano Samuel Mehr, de la Universidad de Harvard, propone que los seres humanos cantan de las mismas cosas en las mismas circunstancias, con estructuras musicales similares, aunque pertenezcan a culturas diferentes. El estudio investiga más de 300 sociedades tradicionales concluyendo que, sin importar la distancia geográfica, racial o étnica, la música parece tener un lenguaje universal. Otros investigadores rechazan esa noción y consideran que la mayoría del mundo occidental no sabría descifrar ni los temas, ni patrones del Yaegoromo, una canción japonesa del siglo XII. Para bien o para mal, la comunalidad de patrones musicales es evidente, más que nunca, en la música contemporánea. De hecho, los grandes éxitos musicales tienen melodías cada vez más simples y repetitivas. Quizá no necesitemos de investigación científica para darnos cuenta de que las canciones que triunfan tienen un número mayor de notas por segundo, múltiples capas de voces e instrumentos y una producción que cuida cada sonido. Por eso, la única manera de evitar abrumar e incomodar a los oyentes es simplificar melodías y letras. Pero para los que usamos la música como medio litúrgico, ¿estaremos cayendo en el misma simpleza?

Con frecuencia olvidamos que como lengua viva, nuestro idioma está sujeto a cambios; palabras que nacen y palabras que mueren. Por eso, consideramos un neologismo de profundas implicaciones éticas, tanto personal como socialmente. Hace pocos años, la Fundación del Español Urgente (Fundéu) aceptó la palabra que da nombre al miedo, rechazo o aversión a los pobres. Lamentablemente, la realidad que describe la hizo prominente hasta el punto de convertirse en “palabra del año” en 2017, siendo incluida en el Diccionario de la Lengua Española. La palabra “aporofobia” se le debe a Adela Cortina Orts, catedrática de Filosofía Moral en la Universidad de Valencia, España. La profesora Cortina es autora de Aporofobia, el rechazo al pobre: Un desafío para la democracia (Paidós, 2017), que consideramos en esta conversación. Ahí, se muestran formas de combatir la aporofobia que van desde la educación, la mobilidad económica y el compromiso a la justicia, llegando incluso a la manipulación genética. Pero, si la aporofobia es un problema de condición -como otros pecados- quizás deberíamos también buscar la transformación total del ser que propone Jesucristo.

EL deseo de ser reconocido y recibir el respeto debido es una necesidad emocional común y saludable en cada ser humano. En un artículo publicado por Christianity Today, el autor, Griffin Gooch, confiesa que, aunque Jesús no se aferró a su estatus, él trata de hacerlo todo el tiempo. Griffin, igual que muchos de nosotros, desea ser reconocido, alcanzar renombre y abrirse camino a base de una elevada reputación. Y aunque ese deseo pudiera ser normal, cuando raya con la obsesión es cuestion de salud mental. Además, alcanzar renombre y abrirse camino a base de falsedades es típico de la falta de integridad de un cínico. Es interesante notar que, para algunos, Jesucristo no gozaba de buena reputación y solo recibió el reconocimiento que realmente importa.

A simple vista, no hay mucho en común entre El libro de Job -en la Biblia- y el cuento Las aventuras de Alicia en el país de las maravillas del británico Lewis Carroll. Un reciente artículo del portal Religion News Service sugiere que las tragedias extremas de Job le hacen caer por un túnel emocional de confusión hacía una realidad de inimaginable dolor. Ambos relatos desafían las convenciones de sus géneros literarios. Además, sus protagonistas se burlan de sabelotodos y sermoneadores, resistiéndose a la sabiduria popular y convencional. Es probable que lo más fantástico de la historia del doliente Job sea no encontrar alivio alguno en sus amigos. En este episodio conversamos sobre esas tragedias de locura y donde encontrar esperanza después de haber caído dando tumbos "por la madriguera del conejo".

A quien pertenece la formación de valores en los más jóvenes es una de las mayores “batallas culturales”. Para algunos, es responsabilidad de expertos, educadores e incluso el gobierno. Para otros, es responsabilidad exclusiva de los padres. En estos días, The New York Times publica un editorial sobre las necesidades de la educación técnica-superior. A raiz de las protestas en las universidades norteamericanas por el conflicto palestino-israelí, los autores -ambos académicos- proponen una formación universitaria que incluya aprender civilidad y democracia. Pero valores como el respeto, la consideración, la generosidad, la tolerancia, la empatía y la solidaridad, entre otros, son gestados temprano en el desarrollo humano. Quizás por eso, en la tradición cristiana esa formación ética es responsabilidad de la familia.
