In this episode Jon and Les share some “Hollywood-inspired” wisdom for pastors who are just getting started in their entrepreneurial journeys.  Reaching way back to the classic hit TV show, MacGyver, Jon and Les unpack a great lesson for entrepreneurs. 

Regardless of the impossible situations MacGyver found himself in, he managed to use whatever tools and resources at his disposal to take care of business and live to fight another day.  Sometimes it’s tempting for start-up entrepreneurs to look around at more seasoned veterans of business who are operating at a higher level and assume that unless they can have the same tools and resources as the pros, they’re not going to be able to make it.

But just like MacGyver, we can lean into whatever resources we have available to us in order to get our businesses off the ground so we, too, can live to fight another day.  Jon and Les also list several of the ways they bootstrapped their businesses in the early days and the free or low-cost tools they used in the process.

In this episode Jon and Les speak directly to those who sit on boards and leadership teams in churches all across the nation.  Unfortunately, in many instances, pastors feel as though their potential to engage in some kind of marketplace ministry will be directly opposed by their boards.  Jon and Les have some words of admonition and encouragement for church boards and make a strong case for why it’s a “win-win” scenario for a pastor to be granted the freedom to launch a side-hustle in addition to serving in their pastoral role.  Here are some of the big ideas Jon and Les share in this episode:

• The traditional model of the “full-time pastoral ministry” is taking pastors out of the ministry faster than we are replacing them.
• You likely have unrealistic expectations of your pastor!
• Your church will benefit when your pastor is not hurting financially.
• Both your pastor AND your church will benefit by having your pastor in the marketplace.
  • Your church members will not be able to sit back and assume the pastor is the primary ministry provider.  They will need to get off the bench and into the game.
  • Your church will be able to identify and overcome any unrealistic and unbiblical expectations that have been placed upon their “full-time” pastor.
  • Your pastor will be less hesitant to preach boldly, lead innovatively, and confront problems in the church.
  • Your pastor will not have a low ceiling for their earning potential.
  •  Your pastor can avoid the trap of their church ministry becoming a one-dimensional, all-consuming identity.

In the backstage portion of this podcast Jon and Les talk to pastors about the best way to utilize this content with their boards and have it be the starting point for some great conversations that will lead to a better and healthier way of doing ministry:

• We encourage you to share this with your current (or potential) board.  Let them know you resonate with this content and desire for them to listen to it.  (Feel free to tell them any parts of it you don’t necessarily agree with.)
• After they have had a chance to listen and process the content, lead them through a conversation in which they can give you their feedback.  Be ready to suggest some changes you would like to see moving forward.
• If you find yourself dealing with a toxic board and no ability to change it…LEAVE!  There are so many ways for you to be obedient to God’s call upon your life and thrive in the process.  You don’t have to keep putting up with a toxic situation!

In this episode Jon and Les speak to the pastor who has come to the conclusion that the extra income from a side-hustle would be great, but they have no idea where or how to get started.  

Generally we find people in this space dealing with two different issues:

On one hand, we see the common “problem” of someone having so many ideas they’re struggling to choose the “right” one.  

On the other hand we work with pastors that truly have no idea what steps to take first or what direction to move on their entrepastor journey.

In this episode Jon and Les answer a question that comes up from time to time from pastors who are wrestling with the idea of launching a side-hustle. 

Although the question gets asked in various ways, at its core is the dilemma some people believe exists for a pastor to have more than one stream of revenue.  

Much of this thinking stems from a verse in 1 Corinthians 9 that contains the phrase, “those who preach the gospel should receive their living through the gospel.”  

At first glance, some may interpret this to mean that a pastor should ONLY be paid for their gospel work.  But is that really what Paul is communicating in the full context of this passage of Scripture?  Jon and Les believe there is much more to understand around this topic.  

In this episode you will hear them explain how this verse is not prohibiting pastors from earning one or more streams of revenue through profitable business pursuits in the marketplace in addition to their income for serving in a pastoral role.

In this episode Jon has a conversation with Wayne Prevette.  Wayne, along with his wife Rosanne are the founders of Celebrating Life Inc.  As professional Life Celebration Specialists, they have served thousands of people over their 40-years of ministry together.

Much of their ministry brings them into the service of people in some of life’s most significant moments such as weddings, funerals, and the birth of new life. 

Together they have trained thousands of other Life Celebration Specialists and have multiplied the scope of their ministry and business.   

Before launching this business, Wayne spent a good number of years in traditional pastoral ministry.  As he began to turn his focus of ministry beyond the four walls of the traditional church, he discovered a massive community of people in need of service. 

Living in an ever-growing secular country, Wayne encountered so many people who would never even dream of darkening the door of a traditional church, and yet at some very key moments in their life (weddings, funerals, and the birth of their children) would be very open to spiritual matters and even seeking a leader to guide them in those celebrations.

In time, Wayne founded and built Celebrating Life Inc and has conducted over 7000 life celebrations.  His dream is to replicate what he has built in Canada in the United States as well as he sees America on the same path to secularism that Canada is on.
