About the Book:  

Drawing on narratives from hundreds of Black, Latinx, and Indigenous individuals, Ebony Omotola McGee examines the experiences of underrepresented racially minoritized students and faculty members who have succeeded in STEM. Based on this extensive research, McGee advocates for structural and institutional changes to address racial discrimination, stereotyping, and hostile environments in an effort to make the field more inclusive.

About the author:
As an associate professor of diversity and STEM education at Vanderbilt University's Peabody College, Dr. McGee investigates what it means to be racially marginalized while minoritized in the context of learning and achieving in STEM higher education and in the STEM professions. In particular, she studies the racialized experiences and racial stereotypes that adversely affect the education and career trajectories of underrepresented groups of color. This involves exploring the social, material, and health costs of academic achievement and problematizing traditional forms of success in higher education, with an unapologetic focus on Black folk in these places and spaces.

About the Facilitator:
Dr. ReAnna S. Roby is a Postdoctoral Scholar at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College in the Department of Teaching and Learning. Currently, she works with the NSF-funded Fisk-Vanderbilt Bridge Program Regional Center of Excellence in Broadening Participation. As a first-generation scholar, Roby’s background as a Black Southern woman in science greatly informs her service, research, and teaching—praxis. Roby’s scholarship employs Critical Race Feminism, Curriculum Theory, and Critical Qualitative methodologies to explore the ways in which the narratives of Black women and girls in science (formally and informally) could be used to reconceptualize science

Kenyatta Cavil, scholar and host of Inside the HBCU Sports Lab, and Dr. Derrick E. White, author of Blood, Sweat, and Tears: Jake Gaither, Florida A&M, and the History of Black College Football and co-host of The Black Athlete Podcast.

About the author:
Born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, Dr. White earned his Ph.D. in history from The Ohio State University. He uses the lens of Black organizational life to examine the modern Black history, sports history, and intellectual history. His most recent book, Blood, Sweat, and Tears chronicles the development of black college football in the twentieth century and is among the first comprehensive histories of black college athletics. Using the biography of Alonzo “Jake” Gaither and the history of the football program at Florida A&M University (FAMU), he shows how black college football and its supporters created successful programs during segregation by relying on a network of athletic enthusiasts in the media, on campuses, and in the community. Dr. White has published articles in New Politics, The Journal of African American History, the C.L.R. James Journal, the Journal of African American Studies, and the Florida Historical Quarterly. He is co-host “The Black Athlete Podcast” with Professor Louis Moore, Grand Valley State University, and I tweet from @blackstar1906.

About the book:

Black college football began during the nadir of African American life after the Civil War. The first game occurred in 1892, a little less than four years before the Supreme Court ruled segregation legal in Plessy v. Ferguson. In spite of Jim Crow segregation, Black colleges produced some of the best football programs in the country. They mentored young men who became teachers, preachers, lawyers, and doctors--not to mention many other professions--and transformed Black communities. But when higher education was integrated, the programs faced existential challenges as predominantly white institutions steadily set about recruiting their student-athletes and hiring their coaches. Blood, Sweat, and Tears explores the legacy of Black college football, with Florida A&M's Jake Gaither as its central character, one of the most successful coaches in its history. A paradoxical figure, Gaither led one of the most respected Black college football programs, yet many questioned his loyalties during the height of the civil rights movement.

Among the first broad-based histories of Black college athletics, Derrick E. White's sweeping story complicates the heroic narrative of integration and grapples with the complexities and contradictions of one of the most important sources of Black pride in the twentieth century.

About the host:

Dr. Cavil is a prominent voice on the business and leadership of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and a specialist on the HBCU Sports Culture paradigm. He is the author of Early Athletic Experiences at HBCUs: The Creation of Conferences. From an Africana-centered framework of HBCU athletics, he teaches about consumer behavior in HBCU athletics, strategic management, vision and leadership in HBCU athletic programs, and the contextualization of critical race theory in the Sporting HBCU Diaspora. Jelani M. Favors, Ph.D., is an associate professor of history at Clayton State University. Favors
has received major fellowships in support of his research that includes an appointment as a
Humanities Writ Large Fellow at Duke University in 2013, and he was an inaugural recipient of the Mellon HBCU Fellowship at the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke in 2009. In 2014, Favors was invited to co-teach the course, “Citizenship and Freedom: The Civil Rights Era,” alongside Pulitzer Prize winning historian Taylor Branch at the University of Baltimore. Favors’ essay, “Race Women: New Negro Politics and the Flowering of Radicalism at Bennett College, 1900-1945,” won the R.D.W. Connor Award as the best article published in the North Carolina Historical Review for 2018. The following year, his first book, “Shelter in a Time of Storm: How Black Colleges Fostered Generations of Leadership and Activism,” was published by the University of North Carolina Press.

Some of America’s most pressing civil rights issues—desegregation, equal educational and employment opportunities, housing discrimination, and free speech—have been closely intertwined with higher education institutions. Although it is commonly known that college students and other activists, as well as politicians, actively participated in the fight for and against civil rights in the middle decades of the twentieth century, historical accounts have not adequately focused on the roles that the nation’s college presidents played in the debates concerning racism. Based on archival research conducted at a range of colleges and universities across the United States, The Campus Color Line sheds light on the important place of college presidents in the struggle for racial parity. The Campus Color Line illuminates how the legacy of academic leaders’ actions continues to influence the unfinished struggle for Black freedom and racial equity in education and beyond.

About the author:
Eddie R. Cole, Ph.D., is associate professor of higher education and organizational change at UCLA. Dr. Cole’s research focuses on college presidents’ historic role in shaping racial policies and practices both inside and outside of the educational sphere. As a scholar of higher education history, his approach in covering historical material and making connections to the current, critical context has garnered respect and praise from academics as well as intellectuals and activists beyond the academy. His finesse in using extensive, historical materials to address contemporary racial issues in higher education demonstrates the role of higher education in influencing all aspects of American life. Dr. Cole’s scholarship and public writing has also been featured in The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and Chronicle of Higher Education.

About Dr. Pierce-Burnette:
Dr. Burnette, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, joined Huston-Tillotson University as president on July 1, 2015. She served as interim President at Pierce College in Puyallup, Washington; the Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer, Executive Assistant to the President, Vice President for Information Technology and Services, and Chief Information Officer at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio; Dean of Information Technology at Pierce College in Lakewood, Washington; and Manager of Consulting and Project Management Services at the Washington State Department of Transportation in Olympia, Washington. Colette has combined her IQ, EQ, entrepreneurial spirit, and technical knowledge to forge successful careers in engineering, information technology, and higher education. Before transitioning into higher education, Dr. Burnette worked as a Computer Analyst at The Washington Post, an Operations Support Engineer at Proctor and Gamble, Director of Information Systems at Neighborhood Reinvestment Corp., and ran her own computer consulting firm, CompuMent.
