After publishing a story for USA Today as part of an investigation into child sexual abuse, Dastagir became the target of an online mob launched by QAnon and encouraged by Donald Trump, Jr. It motivated her to investigate the pervasive online abuse and harassment women face, which can produce devastating psychological effects that over time may be far more insidious and long-lasting than the effects of physical violence. Some statistics from To Those Who Have Confused You to Be a Person to consider:

 

61% of women say online harassment is a major problem

41% of women ages 15 to 29 censor themselves online to avoid harassment

Americans reporting severe harassment increased from 15% in 2014 to 25% in 2020

Black women journalists and politicians are 84% more likely to be mentioned in abusive or problematic tweets than their white female peers

 

A global study of online violence against women journalists found that 20% said they had been attacked or abused offline in connection with online abuse

Nearly 66% of women journalists said they’d been harassed online at least once and, of those, about 40% said they avoided reporting certain stories as a result.
