Learning in the Flow of Work suggests that for continuous learning to happen, resources should be accessed within the learner’s workflow.
Investing just 5 minutes a day, participants experience a curated feed, incorporating gamified, point-scoring microlearning - videos, graphics, readings, journal entries - combined with peer-to-peer social learning.
Embracing the Learning in the Flow of Work principle, first coined by Josh Bersin (1), workplace educator and Host of Manage Self, Lead Others podcast, Nina Sunday, is morphing her workplace training programs into 5-day or 30-day learning events, accessed via smartphone app or the desktop.
MICROLEARNING
Microlearning is small doses of actionable information, whether a video minicourse (each video under 5 minutes), blog article, podcast episode, on-demand learning or even better, a curated feed.
Each new micro-behaviour is digestible, actionable and memorable, which makes learning stick.
Web platforms and smartphone apps can deliver bite-size microlessons dripped out over the course of a 5-day, 14-day or 30-day gamified learning event. Interacting with the platform takes only 5 minutes a day, at any convenient time, for the duration.
Peer-to-peer support is incorporated as a community inside the app, with its own social media style commenting and feedback.
COLLABORATIVE
Learning itself can become more collaborative by incorporating peer-to-peer support and feedback providing an opportunity to discover, share and discuss content.
EMPLOYEE EXPERIENCE (EX)
Why should organisations focus on incorporating regular, even bite-size, opportunities for learning and growth? Research(2) shows enterprises that do are:
· 2.6 times more likely to exceed financial targets
· 3 times more likely to delight customers
· 20 times more likely to build skills that lead to career growth
· 7.2 times more likely to retain people
· 29 times more likely their people will grow, develop and realise their full potential
· 4.1 times more likely to adapt well to change
· 4 times more likely to innovate
The overarching purpose of skills development is career growth of the individual. Josh Bersin recently renamed LITFOW to Learning in the Flow of Growth. (3)
