When we start to think all the knowable stuff is known, we get ourselves into trouble. We also get into trouble when we don't expect our relationships to grow and change. Unfortunately, we tend to turn off some of the key things we need to grow and change. This may be because it's overwhelming to have a totally open mind and be constantly growing. But God will guide you. #Babysteps.

It's too easy to feel stuck, to develop a fixed mindset when it comes spiritual growth. And unfortunately, the people around us can reinforce that idea with negative and shame inducing talk. If you listen to them, you'll start to talk to yourself that way and then you'll never grow. Today we discuss ways to shift our thinking back to the way God designed us—able to grow and change.

We used to think you can't teach an old dog new tricks. But, neural scientists have discovered that our brains can change, we can learn at any age! Evan and Liz Frerichs think this ties in well to God's freely given grace. Through growth mindset, we have the freedom to make mistakes without getting defeated—to get up and try again as many times as it takes!

If God wanted us to be perfect, he would have made us pop into the world precocial (born fully functional). But we're designed to be growing and changing as people and as Christians. This must honor God somehow. It's our job as adults to spend our energy and resources, which God freely gives, on that growth process.

When we don't realize God is paying attention to us in a loving way, providing all the approval we could ever need, we tend to manipulate ourselves and others into weird knots. We strive to either convince ourselves that we don't really need anyone's approval or we seek only the approval of others—either way we are lost to our true center. God loves you!

Who knows your situation better than God? So then why do we compare ourselves to others to grade our performance? Comparing ranks and values is a quick and easy way to scarcityville. You want to have your worth-wagon hitched to God's ideas about success and failure.

Scarcity mindset thrives in a shame environment. So how do you know if you're operating from a position of shame? Do you see your value wrapped up in your performance? Do you tend to talk negative to yourself when you make mistakes? If your value is dependent on performance, you're probably stuck in shame. God is ready to redefine those false messages. Say 'Yes' to his call today!

It's a trap thinking God's not taking care of us and therefore we've got to take care of ourselves. This is a huge hang up and we've got to decide: do we work through our hangups or do we hang out with them forever? We need to practice our surrender skills on little things.

This week we're going to discuss Brené Brown's book Daring Greatly—specifically the parts about scarcity. This can be a tricky topic. It can be one we don't realize we're even dealing with until we take an honest look at ourselves. Evan & Liz Frerichs encourage you to take that honest look and begin the ascent out of the hole.
