Deep brain structures get sensory input first. They contain the pleasure, attention, and fight-flight processing centers. The same chemical-dopamine-runs a lot of this. Therefore drugs that trigger dopamine set up conditioned responses really fast (addiction). You just make conscious resolutions to overcome this. You can avoid it. You can substitute one stimulus for a worse one..and you can put the entire process into a larger context (transcending it)
