On January 30, the 195th birthday of Adele Brice, Bishop David L. Ricken, the 12th Bishop of the Diocese of Green Bay, promulgated a decree officially opening the cause for the canonization of Adele Brice and naming her a Servant of God.

Fr. Tony Stephens is a native of Angelus, Kansas, and earned a B.A. in Theology from Christendom College. Discerning a call to religious life and the priesthood, he joined the Fathers of Mercy in 2000. In 2001, Fr. Tony studied for the priesthood at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, and received his Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained a priest in 2005 and he served for two years as the assistant pastor of a parish church.

In 2007, Fr. Tony was assigned to begin traveling and preaching parish retreats, also known as “parish missions”. His travels have taken him all over North American and to Australia. From 2009-2015, he served as the Vocations Director and Student Master for the community. In August of 2015, he joined the formation faculty at the Mt. St. Mary’s of the West in Cincinnati, OH, where he worked as the Vice Rector and Director of Formation until the Spring of 2021. After completing a six-year term at the seminary, he rejoined the Fathers of Mercy mission band as a traveling mission preacher. He now serves as Rector of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion, appointed in 2024.

Fr. Chas Canoy has been a priest for the Diocese of Lansing since 2005. He grew up in Columbia, Missouri and graduated from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in 1994. After working for General Mills as a business planning associate, he studied philosophy at Franciscan University, where he dated a young lady from Michigan. That relationship led him to moving to Ann Arbor and working at Legatus until 2000. A transformative 30-day Ignatian retreat moved him to enter seminary.

After his priestly ordination in 2005, Fr. Chas served at parishes in Ann Arbor and Saline before returning to Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit in 2010, this time to serve on the faculty while completing his S.T.L. degree with a specialty in the New Evangelization. Since 2014, Fr. Chas has been the pastor of St. John the Evangelist in Jackson, Michigan, while also serving as the chaplain for the Ann Arbor Chapter of Legatus. He still enjoys his childhood sport of golf, but now with a glass of bourbon on the rocks afterward.

Detroit Catholic: As moderator of the curia, Fr. Birney aims to help Chancery better serve parishes

Ordained in 1998, Fr. Tim Birney has spent most of his priestly ministry in parish life, serving most recently as pastor of St. Frances Cabrini Parish in Allen Park and moderator of the Quo Vadis Family of Parishes, which also includes parishes in Ecorse, Taylor and Melvindale. From 2007 to 2016, Fr. Birney served as vocations director for the Archdiocese of Detroit.In October, Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger appointed Fr. Birney as vicar general and moderator of the curia for the Archdiocese of Detroit, succeeding Fr. Jeffrey Day, who has served in both roles since 2018. Fr. Birney began his new assignment Jan. 2, and has spent the past few weeks getting acclimated to Chancery life.
