The Lydian Spin

Episode 11 Kembra Pfahler

Listen Later

Lydia and Tim sit down with Lydia's friend Kembra Pfahler. Kembra is an artist, actress, teacher, and musician, best known as the painted lead singer of the theatrical death rock band The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black.

She coined the term “availablism” to describe her approach of making work with whatever materials are available.

Touring extensively with her band is only one aspect of her work. Kembra was also one of the main instigators behind the Future Feminist exhibition, which was shown in spaces around the world including a former meat factory in Arhus Denmark and the Hole Gallery in New York City. Kembra's work has been included in the 2008 Whitney Biennial and the Womanizer exhibition at Deitch Projects.

Lydia and Kembra's discursive conversation explores many topics. Topics include the 13 tenets of Future Feminism, growing up in Hermosa Beach California in the 1960s, the life-changing qualities of black hair dye, Kate Moss, kleptocrats, creeps, tyrants, New York City as the anus of United States, and how Kembra became the artist she is now.
