In this episode of The Bream Fishing Project, we break down Round 1 of the 2025 Bream Masters South Australia series, held at Port River, Port Adelaide on February 1st and 2nd. It was a grind for the entire field, but we caught up with the top three anglers to hear how they managed to put fish in the well when others struggled to even land a legal.
Your host, 2019 Hobie Kayak Fishing World Champion Andrew Death, chats with:
🎣 3rd Place – Paul Cook: Paul returns to recap another tough Port River round. He shares his strategy of working mangrove edges with bent minnows, paddle tails, and crankbaits. Paul explains how reading tidal movement and fish behavior gave him his edge, and how a productive 45-minute window on Day 1 made all the difference.
🎣 2nd Place – Gavin Howard: Gavin details his best-ever day on the Port, landing multiple legals on a Gulp Sandworm and riding that result to a solid second-place finish. He also breaks down how he ground it out on Day 2 to secure one vital fish late in the day—showing grit and persistence when conditions got even tougher.
🎣 1st Place – Lee Kirchner: Lee not only took the win but also helped run the event! He talks through his approach of using deep-diving hardbodies in heavy current and how staying calm under pressure helped him convert two key bites on Day 2. His ability to adapt and target pressured fish sealed the victory.
🎤 At the end of the episode, Andrew shares some updates about the future direction of the podcast, including changes to interview scheduling. He also speaks from the heart about supporting The Fly Program, a mental health initiative for men. Every membership to The Bream Fishing Project Collective contributes to this cause.
Whether you're chasing upgrades in tough conditions, learning about tidal timing, or just love hearing how tournament anglers think under pressure, this episode is full of insights, stories, and laughs.
