Baba Yaga is a prominent figure (sometimes one of three sisters sharing the same name) in Slavic folklore, alternately portrayed as a hideous, child-eating crone or as a kindly old woman who aids the hero. She is closely linked with the forest and its creatures and is instantly recognizable by her chicken-legged hut deep in the woods, her flying wooden mortar and pestle (or broom), and her habit of sweeping away her tracks.
