Gold glinted in the Sierra foothills in 1859 when four prospectors struck a promising vein on the Eastern slope. Sworn to secrecy until winter passed, they plotted their return in Spring while other fortune hunters scoured the opposite side of the mountains. W.S. Bodey volunteered for the dangerous journey back to Monoville for provisions, but nature had other plans. A sudden blizzard descended, claiming his life before he could reap the rewards of discovery. When his companions later established a camp in his memory, a sign painter's error transformed " Bodey" into "Bodie" – an accidental rechristening that endured through the decades that followed.
