Nathan McClintock is Assistant Professor of Urban Studies & Planning at Portland State University. A geographer focusing on urban agriculture (UA) and food systems and urban political ecology, he integrates qualitative and quantitative methods (from social theory to soil sampling and spatial analysis) to understand food systems, cities, and the environment. He is currently conducting research on UA in Portland (with some comparative work in Canada and the Pacific NW), and is particularly interested in the relationship between UA, sustainability policy, social movements, race and class. He draws on more than fifteen years of sustainable agri-food systems work in North America and the Global South wearing a number of different hats along the way: researcher, trainer, journalist, Peace Corps volunteer, food policy council member, and farmer. He received his PhD from UC Berkeley (Geography, 2011) where his dissertation focused on the rise of the UA in Oakland and opportunities for its expansion. He completed a MS at NCSU (Crop Science/Agroecology, 2004) where he conducted research on compost use and nutrient cycling at the Center for Environmental Farming Systems.
