 Gris Gris Box 

Gris‐ Gris Box is one of Saar’s so-called ancestral boxes, an assemblage grounded in African American ritual tradition. At its heart sits a doll evoking an African American woman, encircled by ceremonial objects— feathers, beads and small spheres that stand in for the planets. Strands of hair dangle beneath the box’s base, a nod to hoodoo and other healing customs. Along the top rim three carved eyes appear, recalling the “ third eye” of inner vision in many spiritual systems. Its title points directly to African American ritual practice and the ways memory, lineage and spirituality inform artistic creation.
