Episode 1976: The 90-10 Principle That Changed My Perspective

Listen Later

On Day 1976 of my consecutive daily running streak, I'm exploring Stephen Covey's powerful 90-10 principle: 10% of life is what happens to you, 90% is how you react to it. This concept has become essential to maintaining consistency through 19,760km of my 40,075km barefoot-style journey around the world.

When you're committed to running every single day regardless of conditions, you quickly learn the difference between reacting and responding. Equipment failures, weather challenges, and physical setbacks are the 10% I can't control. But how I choose to process and adapt to these situations determines whether each day moves me closer to my goal of raising £1M for children's causes.

This principle applies beyond running. Whether facing business pressures, family commitments, or unexpected obstacles, our responses shape our reality far more than our circumstances. The children we're supporting through Great Ormond Street Hospital and BBC Children in Need demonstrate this daily - they can't control their conditions, but their resilience and courage inspire everyone around them.

With 20,315km still to go, I know countless uncontrollable variables await. This mindset shift from victim to architect of my experience will determine not just whether I complete this mission, but how much I grow through the process.
