On the program we will listen this week to music in honor of Black History Month. In 1926 Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, educator and publisher, introduced Black History Week. He chose February because it's the birth month of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass; the celebration became a month-long event in 1976. We'll listen to music from Rhiannon Giddens, Dom Flemons, Irma Thomas, Buffalo Nichols, Odetta and many others. We'll concentrate on the rich textures of African American popular music … this week on The Sing Out!
