As an expert in place-names, Dr. Macniven further explained, “While derived from a local Gaelic place-name meaning 'The Hollow of Proaig', it appears to build on an earlier Viking place-name, ‘Breiðvík’, meaning 'Broad Bay', which accurately describes the topography.”
