In the 1970s, Billy Milligan was charged with raping three women at the Ohio State University. He was the first person diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder to identify it as a defense for his crimes. He also was the first acquitted of a major crime for this reason, instead spending a decade in psychiatric hospitals.
